TI Offers Low-Cost 486DX2 Microprocessors For Consumer And Small Business
PCs

DALLAS (June 5) -- TI today made high performance computing more affordable
for the average consumer with the introduction of a low-cost version of
the popular 486DX2-class microprocessor, the electronic brain of a
majority of today's personal computers.

With a price tag of $80, the new chip will allow personal computer
manufacturers to make high-performance PCs for less than $1,000. Chips in
this class normally sell for more than $100.

"With an $80 price, PC manufacturers can offer personal computers that have
the speed and power of much more expensive machines at affordable prices,"
said Rich Templeton, TI senior vice president, Semiconductor Group. "And
we're making this product available to PC manufacturers now to help them
make a lot of families happy this Christmas season."

The new TI486DX2 runs at speeds of up to 80 megahertz (MHz), the
measurement by which the performance of a PC microprocessor is judged,
providing plenty of horsepower to run multimedia applications at a price
consumers can afford, Templeton added.

The 486-class chip is the most popular microprocessor in the world today, a
trend that is expected to continue through 1995. According to the
Storeboard Channel Tracking Service, 57 percent of PCs sold through retail
channels in the US were based on 486DX-class processors. For 1995,
Computer Intelligence InfoCorp, a market research firm, predicts that 35
million out of the more than 55 million microprocessors that are expected
to ship will be 486-class processors.

Tony Massimini, microprocessor analyst at In-Stat, a Scottsdale,
Arizona-based market research firm, added, "Our numbers confirm that the
majority of microprocessor unit shipments in 1995 will still be
486-class."

The TI486DX2 is Windows compatible and exceeds the Windows 95 recommended
specification by 115 percent. TI will continue to offer higher speeds of
the TI486 processors as well as next-generation microprocessors in the
future.

"The TI486DX2 product will complement our existing 486 product line. We are
continuing to invest in future x86 microprocessor production and
development in order to be a long-term player in the market," said
Templeton.

Samples of the TI486DX2 microprocessors are available now from TI. Volume
production of the TI486DX2 is planned for September of 1995.
