FREE "VIRTUAL WORKSHOP" REACHES FAR BEYOND THE INTERNET

A free workshop, "Dreams: The Key To Your Inner Self, " will be offered by
e-mail for the first time this summer on the Internet. Those who do not
have modems can participate using a touchtone telephone.

The workshop has sparked widespread interest because it provides a glimpse
of where the Information Age is heading:the integra- tation of computers
and telephones. Many believe that Computer Telephony is the wave of the
future and industry leaders, in- cluding Microsoft's Bill Gates, are
investing heavily in this new technology. It could also breath new life
into the nation's floundering public education system.

Workshop participants who have modems will receive weekly lessons in their
Internet mailbox. Those who don't will be able to hear those lessons by
calling a 24-hour "Virtual Classroom" via touch- tone phone and pressing
buttons to select a pre-recorded lecture.

Modem users can also call the touchtone system, which offers a unique
"Class Participation" forum where students can chat with one another,
discuss study topics, and consult with the workshop instructor. This human
interaction and the resulting development of verbal communication skills
is one crucial ingredient missing in online programs that rely strictly on
modems.

At the conclusion of the four-week course, students will be able to test
their knowledge by taking an interactive exam, either by modem or
touchtone phone.

"The Dream Workshop will be fun and enlightening for everyone," said Lisa
Fleming, a spokesperson for Spectrum Universal, the Los Angeles based
nonprofit organization that developed both the course and the
award-winning "Virtual Classroom" software.

"It will also demonstrate how Computer Telephony can play a key role in
education and make the Information Highway more accessi- ble to the
disabled and homebound, single parents, and millions who don't own
computers," Fleming said. She added that Spectrum is now developing other
programs that will run on the "Virtual Classroom" platform, including an
ESL course, SAT practice phone tests, and a touchtone arithmetic workshop
for children.

Enrollment for the Dream Workshop is open through Friday June 16. Topics
will include how to remember dreams, interpreting dream symbolism, and
problem solving through dream programming. The class begins Monday, June
19. Registration is free.

Educators and others who are involved in distance ed, telecomputing, and
advocates of home schooling and other educational aalternatives are
invited to join the workshop as participating observors. At the end of the
program, comments and feedback on improving the Virtual Classroom medium
will be encouraged.
