America Online Empowers Parents with Expanded Parental Control Tools;
Additionally, Signs Agreement with SurfWatch to Offer Tools for the
Internet

Vienna, VA, July 17, 1995 -- America Online, Inc. announced today that it
has unveiled plans to expand its current parental controls empowering
parents to make choices on the type of information their family accesses
on AOL and the Internet. Additionally, AOL signed a letter of intent with
SurfWatch Software, Inc. to offer parents tools for the World Wide Web.

"America Online wants to empower parents with the appropriate tools to
restrict access to various parts of AOL and the Internet for their
children," said Ted Leonsis, President, America Online Services Company.
"We currently offer parental controls to block certain communication
features and today we are announcing plans to expand these tools for AOL
and the Internet by using existing AOL technology and tools from
SurfWatch."

In September, parents will be able to block all but Kids Only, the area of
the service with content targeted and programmed specifically for kids.
Kids will have access to all the popular features that exist today in the
Kids Only area including kids chat, kids message boards, clubs, contests,
and much more. This will allow parents to have access to all AOL features,
but limit their child's access to the Kids Only Area.

Parents of teens, or parents who want more options, can use the "customize"
Parental Controls approach AOL provides to select the specific
functionality and areas of the service they want to block. AOL's existing
parental controls offers the ability to block certain communication
features such as chat, conferences and instant messages. A new feature
allows parents to block access to the Internet Newsgroups. AOL will also
be expanding these services to allow parents to block software libraries
on AOL and the Internet; email from AOL and the Internet as well as
reading attached email files; and message boards. These new capabilities
will be launched throughout the remainder of the year.

AOL has also redesigned its existing Parental Control area to provide
education and information for parents. Included in this new area are an
informational letter, message boards for parents, child safety brochure,
and AOL's Terms of Service.

AOL's Parental Control feature can only be used by the master account which
is the permanent screen name that was created during the initial sign-on
to America Online. Parental Controls enable the master account holder to
restrict access to certain areas and features on America Online. It can be
set for one or all screen names on the account; once Parental Control has
been set for a particular screen name, it is active each time that screen
name signs on. Changes can be made only by the master account holder.

Additionally, America Online will be working with SurfWatch to provide
parents with the tools to block unwanted inappropriate material on the
World Wide Web. As part of AOL's existing Parental Controls, parents will
have the option to use the SurfWatch tools.

"SurfWatch will help more than 3 million America Online members limit
access to unwanted material on the Internet," said Bill Duvall, CEO of
SurfWatch Software, Inc. "We are pleased to be working with America Online
to bring their members tools which help them choose what their children
see on the Internet without decreasing its power or educational value."
