BAY NETWORKS ETHERNET LATTISSWITCH IS WORLD'S FASTEST SWITCHING HUB -
FORWARDS OVER 2 MILLION PACKETS PER SECOND IN INDUSTRY-RECOGNIZED BRADNER
BENCHMARK

-- LattisSwitch 28115 Also Wins Data Communications Magazine's "Top
Performer" Award --

BILLERICA, Mass., July 24, 1995 -- Bay Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: BNET) today
announced independent, industry-leading performance results from tests of
its LattisSwitch Fast Ethernet Switching Hub performed by Scott Bradner of
the Network Device Test Laboratory at Harvard University. In addition, Bay
Networks LattisSwitch 28115 earned the "Top Performer" award in the July
issue of Data Communications Magazine's Ethernet Switch Product
Evaluation. Together, these tests results confirm the exceptional
performance and zero packet loss capabilities of Bay Networks LattisSwitch
28115 in a high-performance environment.

In its Ethernet switch evaluation, "Industrial-Strength Testing for
Ethernet Switches," Data Communications worked with National Software
Testing Laboratories to evaluate Ethernet switches from 37 vendors,
including Bay Networks LattisSwitch 28115. In this industry benchmark, the
LattisSwitch successfully forwarded 100 percent of the frames, while
demonstrating its zero frame loss capability.

According to Data Communications, "Bay Networks LattisSwitch System 28000
is the first switch ever tested by DATA COMM that didn't drop any frames
when network activity hit 100 percent without relying on backpressure or
MAC address restriction."

The Bradner tests measured the throughput and maximum forwarding rate of
the Bay Networks 28115 Ethernet switching hub in an 800 Mbps offered load
test configuration. In this benchmark, a 16-port Bay Networks LattisSwitch
28115 Switching Hub was connected to 8 NetCom Systems' X1000 2-port
100BASE-T test devices.

In the unicast test, each test device simultaneously forwarded 100 Mbps to
8 ports and received 100 Mbps from 8 ports, with packet sizes ranging from
64 bytes through 1,518 bytes. The 28115 successfully forwarded all
packets, which equates to 800 Mbps of throughput or 1,190,476 packets per
second. In the broadcast test, where one port broadcasts to the other 15
ports at 100 Mbps, the 28115 once again forwarded all packets at all sizes
with zero packet loss. The aggregate throughput attained was over 2
million packets per second forwarded with no packet loss.

Throughput is defined as the highest packet-per-second rate that a
switching hub can forward without dropping any packets. Packet loss is
defined as the percentage of packets dropped at wire speed.

"By exhibiting the highest levels of throughput performance and low latency
with zero packet loss in both the Bradner benchmark and the Data
Communications lab tests, the LattisSwitch once again distinguishes itself
as the leader in overall performance," stated Peter Tarrant, vice
president of product management at Bay Networks. "As the fastest 100 Mbps
product available today, the LattisSwitch 28115 offers 16 10/100 Fast
Ethernet connections, giving end users a smooth transition as the network
grows and performance demands increase."

The Bradner and Data Communications tests results highlight Bay Networks
recently announced suite of high-performance Ethernet solutions, which
enable departmental, workgroup, and enterprise users to evolve today's
Ethernet networks to high-performance, switched internetworks.

Bay Networks high performance Ethernet solutions include the expanded
LattisSwitch System 28000 Fast Ethernet Switching Hub family, new
100BASE-T router interfaces, a new 100BASE-T Stackable Hub, and a new
10/100 Ethernet Workgroup Switch.

The LattisSwitch Fast Ethernet Switching Hub is the cornerstone of Bay
Networks smooth migration to high-performance networking. In addition to
the 16-port 10/100 Mbps switching hub, the LattisSwitch product family
also offers the model 28104, a new 8-port fiber configuration for
collapsed backbone designs.

Bay Networks, Inc. is a leading worldwide supplier of a full range of
highly available, multiprotocol routers, intelligent hubs, high-speed
