SEQUENT AND COMPAQ INTRODUCE HIGHLY SCALABLE SAP R/3 SOLUTION ON UNIX AND
WINDOWS NT BASED SERVERS -- RECORD PERFORMANCE DEMONSTRATED FOR
MIXED-ENVIRONMENT BENCHMARK

BEAVERTON, Oregon - July 12, 1995 - Sequent Computer Systems, Inc., and
Compaq Computer Corp. today announced their collaboration on a highly
scalable enterprise solution based on the SAP R/3 integrated application
software. It is the first and highest-performing R/3 solution that
integrates both the UNIX and Microsoft Windows NT Server operating systems
in an all-Intel-based enterprise-level architecture.

The comprehensive R/3 offering, which Sequent will integrate, includes
Sequent symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) database servers, symmetric
multiprocessing Compaq ProLiant application servers, and Sequent technical
and support services. The solution will be available with version 3.0 of
SAP R/3.

The Sequent and Compaq solution helps large organizations leverage R/3's
business benefits - integrating global business processes across the
enterprise - by deployment on the most productive and highest-performing
R/3 platforms available today: combined SMP servers from Compaq and
Sequent. In addition, Sequent's proven performance in complex open systems
integration, including deploying some of the world's largest open
databases, ensures successful R/3 implementations. By combining UNIX and
Windows NT Server into a single, enterprise, client/server architecture,
Sequent and Compaq deliver the true benefits of open systems integration:
increased productivity through enhanced Microsoft desktop integration,
lower cost of ownership by leveraging Compaq's industry-leading
application server technology, and the proven commercial-hardened
capabilities of the Sequent Symmetry database systems.

Sequent and Compaq offer servers with scalability, high availability and
automatic recovery, redundancy, and systems management. When combined with
Sequent's proven integration services, these features provide the ability
to support extremely large and growing databases and one of the most
demanding applications, offering unsurpassed enterprise client/server
value. In addition, this three-tier solution provides mission-critical
continuity with Sequent's high-availability database servers at the back
end.

The mixed-environment Sequent and Compaq solution supported 800 benchmark
users in a standard SAP sales-and-distribution (SD) benchmark test in May.
The SD benchmark is the most resource-demanding SAP benchmark - three
times more demanding than the R/3 finance (FI) benchmark. The result
represents the highest R/3 performance to date employing Windows NT
Server. The benchmark results also prove that the Sequent and Compaq
combination is the most cost-effective high-end systems solution for the
R/3 market. The benchmark was sponsored by Intel and was independently
conducted and audited by iXOS Software Inc. of Belmont, California.

The solution extends Sequent's current SAP R/3 offering by adding high-end,
highly available database systems that can run either DYNIX/ptx (Sequent's
SMP version of UNIX) or Windows NT Server. Customers can deploy R/3 in a
single operating system environment - Windows NT Server - across all three
layers of the R/3 architecture, or they can initially deploy the database
server on UNIX and, if desired, migrate it later to Windows NT Server.
Because Sequent implements both UNIX and Windows NT Server on the same
Symmetry architecture, SAP customers gain full investment protection.

Sequent offers two highly scalable choices for the R/3 database server:
Symmetry UNIX-based systems supporting up to 30 100 MHz Pentium
processors; or the Windows NT Server-based WinServer 5000 systems, based
on the Symmetry architecture, supporting up to 28 Pentium processors.
Customers also can use highly available Symmetry clusters, with up to four
nodes supporting up to a total of 120 processors, for the highest database
availability.

For the application server, the solution utilizes Compaq ProLiant servers
running Windows NT Server supporting up to four 100 MHz Pentium
processors. Compaq ProLiant systems offer the high-availability features
customers expect from an application server, including fault tolerance;
fault recovery; redundant power supplies; and system management via Compaq
Insight Manager, Compaq's server application. Compaq ProLiant systems are
used in close to 50 percent of SAP AG's R/3 Windows NT-based installations
worldwide (according to figures from SAP AG).

The relational database for the mixed-environment solution is Oracle
Corp.'s Oracle7. For the homogeneous Windows NT Server-based solution, the
relational database is Oracle7 or Microsoft SQL Server 6; the latter will
undergo SAP certification for Sequent's WinServer systems this quarter.
