EXPANDED UNIX SOFTWARE AND SERVICES AVAILABLE FOR DATA GENERAL'S NEW AVIION
SYSTEMS

WESTBORO, Mass., June 26, 1995 -- As part of its AViiON direction announced
today, Data General Corporation is making available an extensive library
of UNIX software for its new Intel-based AViiON servers. The company also
will provide a complete portfolio of services and upgrade programs for its
AViiON customers.

Our commitment extends beyond high-performance commercial UNIX servers to
the software and services that form the solutions to customer problems,
said President and Chief Executive Officer Ronald L. Skates.

Joel Schwartz, vice president of Worldwide Sales and AViiON Marketing, said
that Data General will benefit from the rapid growth of UNIX servers. UNIX
has become the operating system of choice for the enterprise, said Mr.
Schwartz, and Intel is becoming the microprocessor of choice. Leading
industry software developers are now writing a single version of their
applications for Intel-based systems.

At Oracle, we recognize the efficiency and cost benefits of having a single
port that runs on multiple Intel platforms and are working toward that
goal, said Richard French, vice president of Oracle's Intel UNIX Products
Division.

Thomas Hildebrand, vice president of Oracle's RISC UNIX Products Division,
added, While we will continue to support Oracle on the AViiON 88K
platform, we are pleased to see Data General expanding its AViiON line to
include the Intel architecture. This will combine the benefits of DG/UX, a
proven platform for Oracle7, with the readily available Oracle
applications for the entire Intel family.

Cary Johnson, senior vice president of Sales and Marketing for Progress
Software Corporation, said, Progress has taken a leadership position by
developing a single System 5.4 UNIX port for Intel systems. Users of Data
General's Intel-based AViiON systems will have immediate access to
thousands of enterprise class applications developed by Progress' software
application partners.

According to Mr. Schwartz, Data General customers can be assured that their
hardware and software investments will be protected as we extend our
AViiON product line, since our DG/UX operating system will use a common
source code on both our present Motorola-based AViiON family and upcoming
Intel-based AViiON systems.

DG/UX combines outstanding high availability, symmetric multiprocessing,
clustering and systems management features. It has been rated one of the
industry's finest commercial operating systems by the Illuminata
technology assessment and research group.

Our portfolio of systems integration programs and services will further
enable customers to utilize the new technology in combination with their
current AViiON products, said Mr. Schwartz. The company said existing
applications will require little more than recompilation to run on
Intel-based AViiON systems. Additionally, both the Motorola and
Intel-based AViiON systems will share Data General's CLARiiON storage
systems, systems management tools and networking products.

According to Data General, the installed base for the AViiON line, which
began shipping in 1990, will exceed 30,000 systems this year with a total
value of more than $2 billion.

Data General is a worldwide open systems computing company that specializes
in providing servers and related storage systems, software and services.
The company, which is headquartered in Westboro, MA, reported revenues of
$1.12 billion during fiscal 1994.
