Extended Systems Ships Client/Server Processing for CA-Visual Objects

Advantage Xbase Server gives CA-VO users seamless Client/Server access to
DBF databases

Boise, ID (June 23, 1995) -- Extended Systems today released Version 3.5 of
the Advantage Xbase Server which adds support for Computer Associates'
Visual Objects (CA-VO). For over two years, the Advantage Xbase Server has
provided plug-and-play Client/Server processing for users of NetWare based
CA-Clipper applications. The Advantage Xbase Server's new CA-VO interface
now provides CA-VO users the same type of "seamless" Client/Server access
to DBF databases.

Advantage Xbase Server Version 3.5 supports both CA-Clipper and CA-VO
front-ends. Pricing for the Advantage Xbase Server starts at $895.00 for
the 5-User version. Upgrades to Advantage Xbase Server Version 3.5 are
available free of charge to current customers via Extended Systems' BBS,
and direct from Extended Systems at (800) 235-7576.

The Reasonable Growth Path for Xbase Users

The Advantage Xbase Server is the only Xbase-compatible database server
available today. That's important because traditional PC database
applications make extensive use of navigational, browse-type interfaces to
access data. PC database users expect applications to provide them with
quick, flexible browse-oriented interfaces. Other Client/Server solutions
exist, but they impose serious limitations on PC database users who simply
need to grow their systems to accommodate higher transaction loads, more
users and larger data sets. To take advantage of Client/Server processing,
Xbase users are usually forced to either abandon or completely re-write
their existing applications.

The Advantage

Xbase Server brings Client/Server processing to PC database applications
without rewriting and without limiting a user's ability to browse, scroll
and skip through the database. This seamless migration path from PC
database to Client/Server protects customers' investments in Xbase
applications, development expertise, end-user training and databases.

Improve Multi-User Performance

Traditional PC database applications (CA-VO, FoxPro for Windows, dBASE for
Windows, etc.) perform 100% of their processing on the client workstation
and use the file server only as a shared hard disk. Network traffic,
concurrency and file integrity all create formidable problems when
creating multi-user applications. Rather than process raw information on
the client workstation, Advantage Xbase Server applications processes data
where it resides - on the file server. This shifting of data processing
from the client workstation to the server enables dramatically improved
multi-user performance and reduced network traffic.

Eliminate Index Corruption

Index file corruption as a result of lost communication with a workstation
is a limitation that PC database administrators and programmers have long
had to tolerate. The Advantage Xbase Server eliminates file corruption due
to workstation failure. During traditional interaction between the
workstation and server, the database is open to corruption. Workstation
failure during an update because of a reboot, power failure or memory
problem, can compromise index and database integrity. The Advantage Xbase
Server guarantees every database update either runs to completion or does
not begin. Index integrity now depends only on the file server and not
each workstation to which it is connected. This means no more costly
downtime spent reconstructing critical indexes.

Simple Integration

The Advantage Xbase Server for CA-VO consists of a Visual Objects
Replaceable Database Driver (RDD) and a NetWare Loadable Module (NLM). The
RDD interface allows the Advantage Xbase Server to be 100% source code
compatible with standard DBF-based CA-VO applications. The NLM runs on any
NetWare 3.X or 4.X file server. Integration requires no code modification
or data porting. In addition, the Advantage Xbase Server allows
Client/Server and non-Client/Server applications to simultaneously share
data and index files. This means users can move their DBF-based Windows
applications to Client/Server one application at a time instead of all at
once. Converting applications to Client/Server on a file-by-file basis
reduces network administrators' risks and simplifies troubleshooting.

Extended Systems -- Client/Server Solutions for Xbase Users

The Advantage Xbase Server product line has provided networked PC database
users with practical Client/Server migration tools since 1991. With the
Advantage Xbase Server, Xbase users receive immediate Client/Server
performance and integrity without having to abandon or rewrite their
existing applications. Contact Extended Systems at (800) 235-7576.
