FWB SHIPS HammerTape-PE 2G

The hammerTape-PE 2G is a complete economical backup solution

Menlo Park, July 10. -- FWB, Inc., manufacturer of the award-winning Hammer
brand of high-performance mass storage products, today began shipping the
hammerTape-PE 2G, the newest member of its award-wining family of
HammerTape subsystems.

HammerTape-PE 2G uses QIC (Quarter-inch Cartridge) tape technology which
has been the tape industry standard for many years. The hammerTape-PE 2G
is based on the Conner QIC-3080-compatible drive and is bundled with a
QIC-Wide tape cartridge which provides 2GB of native capacity. Native
capacity is 1.6GB with a non-wide QIC-3080 cartridge. Software compression
is achieved with the bundled Dantz Retrospect software and up to 4GB of
data can be placed on a single QIC-Wide tape.

The hammerTape-PE 2G includes FastSense technology. This technology enables
the drive to sense the sustained throughput of the host system and then
adjust the speed of the tape drive accordingly. The default speed is 450
KB/sec. for a sustained rate of up to 27 MB/min. If necessary the drive
can slow itself down to 300 KB/sec. and 200 KB/sec. Slowing the throughput
down in this way on a slow host actually improves the speed of backup by
reducing tape repositioning. This slower throughput also increases both
drive and tape life.

"The hammerTape-PE 2G is an excellent solution for the average computer
user as well as those who are beginning to work in DTP and multimedia. The
hammerTape-PE 2G will exceed DDS-1 performance on most computers and offer
identical capacity at a lower price," said Fred Swan, senior product
marketing manager at FWB. "It also offers excellent reliability and a
two-year warranty that any user can appreciate."

The hammerTape-PE 2G ($959 MSRP) ships with Dantz Development's Retrospect
($249 MSRP) and Tape Driver Update, one 2GB tape, all necessary cables,
active termination, and full documentation. The drive is covered by FWB's
two-year PremiumService warranty. Extra 2 GB cartridges are sold in
5-packs for $179 (MSRP). HammerTape drives are compatible with all
Macintosh, Power Macintosh, and Power Macintosh with PCI CPUs and are
fully compatible with all FWB products including FWB's 1993 MacUser Eddy
Award Finalist Fast and Wide SCSI-2 JackHammer for NuBus and FWB's PCI
SCSI JackHammer.

Since 1984, FWB. Inc. has been developing mass storage and backup products
