IBM in Music Link-Up With EMI Music Publishing

LONDON, June 28, 1995 . . . IBM today announced a deal between its British
development partner, MARS, and EMI Music Publishing which will allow EMI's
library music to be distributed online through IBM Digital Library
technology.

The pioneering deal is between KPM, the EMI division which provides music
for film, television, video, corporate presentations and advertising, and
Multimedia Archive and Retrieval Systems plc "MARS". The deal represents
another media industry opportunity for IBM Digital Library. IBM chose
MARS, an entrepreneurial British company, as a development partner to
provide this new service because of its extensive experience in the
entertainment industry and its unique understanding of technology.

MARS has worked with IBM to develop a system whereby program, commercial or
event producers can access music online for inclusion in productions.
Using a personal computer, the MARS system will allow producers to select
music for film, television or other use, electronically file a rights
clearance form, gain clearance and obtain the appropriate license within
minutes.

IBM Digital Library is a solution that allows owners of information content
in all its forms -- including film, music, text, art and manuscripts -- to
maximize their assets and make them available through networks around the
world.

"The music industry as a whole needs to organize itself to take advantage
of the opportunities which exist now and will rapidly expand in the near
future as music and media companies recognize and embrace the capabilities
of computer digital technology on a global scale," said Tony Prior,
chairman from MARS.

"Our first initiative, making the most of the incredible array of
opportunities provided by the IBM Digital Library, is to offer an
alternative access system to library music for producers who are tired of
the inefficiency of the present jumble of CDs and tedious administrative
procedures.

"Content owners and producers alike will recognize immediately the enormous
potential of IBM Digital Library, and we are delighted that KPM Music has
chosen to trust us with the computer digitization and electronic
distribution of their superb catalogue.

"Our clarion call to all multimedia content owners is: Digitize Now," said
Mr. Prior.

The deal with EMI Music Publishing is the first major signing for MARS and
will allow producers access to hundreds of hours of specially commissioned
pre-recorded music tailored to their needs. MARS is currently negotiating
with music and other rights owners, including sound effect and photo
libraries, to make their material available online. The Functions of IBM
Digital Library

Five functions form the foundation of IBM Digital Library:

CREATE AND CAPTURE: The process of turning paper, photographs, video and
audio recordings into digital information, along with all the associated
data which together will increase the potential value of the asset.

STORAGE AND MANAGEMENT: Storing and managing the huge mass of information
to ensure that is is available to users wherever they want to access it.

SEARCH AND ACCESS: With so much information contained within IBM Digital
Library, it is important to be able to access what the user needs quickly.
Users are provided with organizational and filtering tools so they can
personalize their information searches in their national languages.

INFORMATION DISTRIBUTION: Information owners can distribute their material
in numerous ways: through any existing network, client server business
solutions, commercial online services or interactive television
solutions.

RIGHTS MANAGEMENT: Providing information through the network for better and
easier access could pose a threat for the unauthorized use of that
information. IBM Digital Library offers the industry's most effective
rights management technologies for digital information. These include:
advanced authentication, royalties management, encryption and
watermarking.

IBM also offers an extensive set of consulting, systems integration and
operational services designed to deliver customers end-to-end solutions by
integrating the IBM Digital Library with other existing technologies.
