LCI Introduces New Era in Wireless Communications With the OmniBeam 2000
Data/Voice Link

Breakthrough System Provides Simultaneous Voice and Data Connectivity On a
Single, Interbuilding Laser Beam Transmission Path

LANCASTER, PA, July 31, 1995 -- Laser Communications, Inc. (LCI), a unit of
Safeguard Scientifics (NYSE:SFE), announces the development of a new class
of high-speed laser optic communications: the OmniBeam 2000 Data/Voice
Link, which provides, for the first time ever, the simultaneous
building-to-building transmission of digital voice trunk (for either T1 or
E1 CEPT) and local area network (LAN) connectivity (for either Token Ring
or Ethernet) via a single laser beam transmission path.

The versatile OmniBeam 2000 Data/Voice Link does not require any regulatory
licensing or right-of-way permits and is in compliance with CCITT/IEEE
Standards. Providing simultaneous send/receive capability, the new
technology supports T1 (1.544 Mbps) or E1 CEPT (2.048 Mbps) Voice Trunk
and Ethernet (10 Mbps) or Token Ring (4 or 16 Mbps) LAN fiber optic
interface. Covering a range of 1.2 kilometers (3,940 feet), the OmniBeam
2000 Data/Voice Link is an ideal solution in applications where a LAN and
PBX must be simultaneously connected between two sites.

The system's low voltage power output makes the laser transmissions an
ideal solution for demanding applications, while the ease of operation--it
only requires a clear line-of-sight and solid supporting location for
mounting and is aligned with a simple Bar Graph and tone-lock
procedure--provides a peerless cost-effective and time-effective
installation.

The OmniBeam 2000 Data/Voice Link is priced at $17,500 and is now
available.
