Maximum Press to Release Two New PowerPC Titles

The First Book Explores the New IBM Power Series PCs; the Second Provides a
Complete Review of the Landmark IBM-Apple-Motorola PowerPC Project

Gulf Breeze, FL (26 July 1995)--This fall, Maximum Press will release two
new books on PowerPC-related topics: IBM Power Series: A Business
Perspective and Exploring the PowerPC Revolution!

IBM has just unveiled the most revolutionary personal computer family since
the original IBM PC. This new product line, the IBM Power Series, promises
to fundamentally change the way we use personal computers. By harnessing
the new and powerful PowerPC microprocessors, IBM intends to bring to
mainstream business users applications such as voice recognition, voice
synthesis, intelligent agents, personal video conferencing, and more. This
next generation of computers promises to enable desktop users to do things
they never dreamed of doing on other computers.

IBM Power Series: A Business Perspective, written by Jim Hoskins and David
Bradley, is the first book on these revolutionary PCs. As with other
titles in the best-selling IBM Business Perspective series, this book is
comprehensive and is written in simple language that nontechnical readers
can readily understand. In fact, Warren Mills, Senior Vice
President-Sales, MicroAge, Inc., claimed this was "the most useful,
comprehensive, and easy-to-read coverage I've seen yet!...Anyone
interested in PCs or UNIX Workstations would benefit greatly from this
book."

IBM Power Series: A Business Perspective first provides a quick review of
the history of the PowerPC project and an introduction to the IBM Power
Series architecture and models. The book then offers a closer look at the
elements that give these unique systems their zing, including
microprocessors, disk drives, multimedia components, software technology,
graphics circuitry, and more. It examines the many new options and
peripherals available--disk and memory expansion, CD-ROM, video add ons,
PCI adapters, displays, printers, tape drives, etc. The book reviews the
alternative operating systems available, including OS/2 Warp, Windows NT,
AIX, and Solaris, in order to help users make the best choice. A
"hands-on" section gets new users started, and a chapter on communications
will help business users painlessly ease Power Series systems into their
existing networks.

To help readers plan how to best deploy these systems, IBM Power Series
explores issues such as software compatibility, emulation, performance,
migration planning, lease versus purchase, maintenance, technical support,
and office ergonomics. The authors outline the appropriate Power Series
systems for three hypothetical businesses (small, medium, and large).

The second PowerPC title to be released this fall by Maximum Press is
Exploring the PowerPC Revolution!, written by Jim Hoskins and Jack
Blackledge, a former IBM programmer and architect for PC- and
PowerPC-based systems. This book tells the whole PowerPC story, from the
events that led to the formation of the landmark IBM-Apple-Motorola
alliance to the most recent PowerPC products and business strategies.
MaxFacts GuideBooks are published on an accelerated schedule to get timely
information to readers more quickly than is possible with traditional
books.

Exploring the PowerPC Revolution! starts by giving an overview of the
PowerPC project, including the history of the IBM-Apple-Motorola alliance.
This fully illustrated book then takes a closer look at the new PowerPC
architecture and at each of the new PowerPC microprocessors (601, 602,
603, 603E, 604, 620, and more). It reviews in detail the new PowerPC-based
personal computers from IBM, Apple, Motorola, and Bull. The book also
examines operating system alternatives, compatibility challenges,
emulation techniques, and other software issues. It includes the latest
information from all PowerPC fronts, including industry consortia,
adopting manufacturers, operating system alternatives, application
software, Human Centered computing, and the latest shifts in IBM's,
Apple's, and Motorola's strategies.

Early praise for Exploring the PowerPC Revolution!:

"...well written and informative. Excellent work!" -- S. Kentopian, IS
Director, DSC Logistic

"...the best PowerPC material I've seen yet. Virtually every sentence
provides useful information without all the fluff." -- Wayne Miller, Sr.
Systems Engineer, SAIC

John Hoskins, co-author of the two PowerPC titles forthcoming from Maximum
Press, is a former IBM engineer and development manager. He was on the
original development team for IBM's Personal System/2 computer family and
is author of IBM Personal System/2 -- A Business Perspective, published by
John Wiley & Sons. This popular book, currently in its eighth edition, has
sold over 100,000 copies in 12 languages. Hoskins later published other
successful titles in the IBM Business Perspective series that covered
IBM's RISC System/6000, AS/400, and S/390 products.

Maximum Press was established by Jim Hoskins in January 1993 to publish
books and special reports to help readers evaluate and effectively deploy
information technology. Maximum Press titles employ the same easy-to-read
style that made the IBM Business Perspective series so popular. In
particular, all terms are defined as they are introduced, which allows
nontechnical readers to quickly understand the material. At the same time,
Maximum Press titles offer comprehensive coverage of the topics explored,
meeting the needs of more knowledgeable readers.

To fulfill his mission to publish timely and accessible information,
Hoskins continually explores using new publishing technologies. "We
gather, organize, and present information in a way that best fits the
needs of our readers," he says. "Right now, that means in book form -- and
we continue to produce books for the foreseeable future. However, we will
use other ways to deliver information to our readers, including via the
Internet, online services, CD-ROM, etc., as demand for these emerging
vehicles grows."

In the middle of 1994, Maximum Press entered into an agreement with
Publishers Group West (PGW) for distribution of Maximum Press books to the
book trade in the United States and Canada. According to Hoskins, "Our
alliance with PGW is strategic to the growth of Maximum Press in the
traditional bookstore marketplace." The first Maximum Press titles
distributed by PGW -- including the newly released Marketing on the
Internet, by Mike Mathiesen, and Real World Client/Server, by Steve Krantz
-- have been greeted very positively by the trade.

David Bradley, Ph.D., co-author of IBM Power Series: A Business
Perspective, was among the original 14 designers of the IBM PC and was
manager of the PowerPC architecture group at IBM's Boca Raton site. He is
also author of a book about the early IBM PCs.

Jack Blackledge, co-author of Exploring the PowerPC Revolution!, worked for
many years for IBM as a programmer and architect for PC and PowerPC-based
systems. He is now retired and living in Boca Raton, Florida.
