THE LIGHTNING HYPERTEXT AND GAME OF PATHOLOGY ($59)

The Lightning Hypertext and Game of Pathology is an electronic book that
consists of 12,003 information screens, over 6000 game question screens,
and the software that controls the hypertext engine. It is written by 4
practicing pathologists: Jules J. Berman, Ph.D., M.D., G. William Moore,
M.D., Ph.D., Jeffrey Seidman, M.D., and David Fowler, M.D.

It runs on any computer with a Windows operating system. It is shipped as
three standard 3.5" floppy disks with highly compressed text that
decompresses to about 10 megabytes when installed on a hard disk.

Every area of pathology is included in the text, including special areas
rarely covered in books, including:

Image analysis
Forensic pathology
Molecular pathology
Legal issues
Internet Resources
Epidemiology
Medical Informatics
Statistics.

Downloading information screens to an external ASCII file (that you can use
in preparing lectures and papers) is fast and easy.

A powerful index of all the words appearing in the text (with the exception
of common words such as `the,' `when', `where', etc. and words of one or
two letters in length) permits extremely rapid Boolean searches.

If you see any interesting word or phrase on a text screen, just highlight
the word with your mouse and you can go directly to the screens that
contain the word or phrase.

The text itself consists of information packets designed to fit on the
computer screen (no need for scrolling text). Navigation through the
information packets can be quickly accomplished by entering a search
phrase. For searches on a fast machine, all the relevant information
screens are collected and ready in a second or two. Or you can go to any
screen by clicking on the listing of a complete Table of Contents.

Each screen covers a small topic in pathology. Thousands of the screens are
referenced. We list the full title of our references, inclusive pages and
every author, so that the references can be easily ported to a
bibliography. In addition, the references can be used as a jumping point
for more in-depth (library) research.

IS THE LIGHTNING HYPERTEXT OF PATHOLOGY A BOOK, OR IS IT AN ABSTRACTING
SERVICE, LIKE MEDLINE?

Whenever we try to explain our product, this question arises. The answer is
that our product is neither a book nor an abstracting service.

Although our information is textual, it is different from a book in that
the text is not linear. In a sense, our software constructs a different
book for every search initiated by the user. Because the information in
each screen is a complete treatment of a small topic in pathology, it is
possible to read screens in any order without losing context. Like a book,
the user can quickly move through screens in consecutive order (forwards
or reverse) and can go directly to any screen selected from a complete
Table of Contents.

Although we cite thousands of references, our product is not an abstracting
service. We cite references to acknowledge the sources of our information,
just like a book cites references. We do not collect published abstracts
of references and we do not try to create abstracts of references.
However, our users can use the software to quickly gather references on
their search subjects. Because we do not limit our references to journals,
(we also cite newspapers, magazines, books, editorials, government
publications, legal references, etc.) our users will find relevant
materials outside the scope of MEDLINE. Because we focus on disease, our
software produces references of the greatest relevance to our users.

The Game subprogram can be used by those preparing for pathology boards to
sharpen their minds and broaden their knowledge base.

Registered users are eligible to buy annual upgrades for just $29.
