Siemens Nixdorf releases WorkParty 2.0 with extended functions

July 7, 1995 -- Paderborn -- Siemens Nixdorf has now released the second
version of its workflow management toolset WorkParty. WorkParty 2.0
incorporates experiences gleaned from pilot projects, as well as
requirements arising from major projects involving banking, public
authorities, industry and the insurance business. The architecture and
interfaces of WorkParty 2.0 are in line with the open reference model
drawn up by the "Workflow Management Coalition", a body of workflow
suppliers, users and analysts for defining workflow standards
(terminology, reference models, interfaces) and in which Siemens Nixdorf
was a founding member.

For Siemens Nixdorf, WorkParty is a cross-sector technology of strategic
significance, which is utilized by existing and new applications via open
APIs (Application Programming Interfaces), in order to expand their range
of services by adding workflow functionality. WorkParty will furthermore
provide the basis for vertical solution packages from Siemens Nixdorf and
partners.

In the marketplace, WorkParty V2.0 is distinguished by its PC orientation,
server-independence and openness vis-a-vis the databases on the market.
Thanks to the ORM (Organization and Resource Manager), WorkParty enables
mapping of the specific customer organizations, and their use by the
business processes. This means that WorkParty is optimally tailored to the
system-related and organizational characteristics involved.

With the new security function, it is possible to differentiate between the
various user classes according to processing, information and
administration authorization. Addressing and the allocation of tasks can
be arranged on a competence-related or role-related basis. It is thus now
possible to map particular application scenarios, such as the "co-pilot
principle", differentiated deputizing and non-personal authorizations.
WorkParty 2.0 offers APIs, via which it is possible to integrate existing
solution environments and new client-server applications into corporate
workflow applications. For synchronization with other vendors applications
and parallel business processes, WorkParty includes event management. This
function makes it possible to incorporate events such as customer
responses or feedback from other applications into the controlling of a
procedure.

In addition, the new ad-hoc functions can be used either to insert the
working steps required at runtime into procedures, or to modify defined
steps, depending on the particular situation or the personal authorization
concerned. This enables the organizational forms "improvisation" and
"scheduling" to be mapped, in addition to organized processes.

Thanks to an organizational structure update log suitable for audit
purposes (e.g. alteration of competences), and a journal with the same
properties (for proof of working steps within a business transaction), all
important actions can be replicated under WorkParty if required. Views of
this data can be configured as desired, and individual interpretations are
possible via the API.
