Latin America Software Sales Reach $48.2 Million in the First Quarter 1995

SOFTWARE SALES BOOM AGAIN IN BRAZIL

July 11, 1995 (Washington, DC) - The Software Publishers Association (SPA)
announced today that U.S. publishers' sales of personal computer
application software reached $48.2 million in Latin America in the first
quarter of 1995, a 85% increase from Q1'94. Unit sales increased 134% for
Q1'95.

Software Sales Hit Another Record in Brazil

SPA sales reports for Latin America are separated into three regions:
Brazil, Mexico, and all other Latin American countries. During the first
quarter of 1995, U.S. publishers reported particularly strong software
sales in the Brazilian market with software revenues growing 327% to a
record $18.5 million for the quarter. In Mexico, however, sales dropped
43% to $6.3 million, potentially attributable to the weakness of the Peso.
Sales in other Latin American markets totaled $23.0 million during the
period, a 143% increase over Q1'94.

Windows Applications Dominate Software Sales

As with last year, Windows applications continued to account for the
majority of application software sales in Latin America in the first
quarter of 1995. Sales of Windows applications reached $44.1 million for
the period, a 110% increase over Q1'94. Windows sales accounted for more
than 90% of application software dollars spent in Latin America in Q1'95,
up from 81% in Q1'94.

The strong Windows application sales in Latin America also had a
significant impact on sales of other operating platform software during
Q1'95. Sales of both DOS and Macintosh applications were off from Q1'94,
falling 18% and 54%, respectively. Together, the two operating platforms
accounted for less than 8% of total software revenues in the period.

The encouraging first quarter sales data confirms Brazil's status as a
major market for U.S. software publishers, said SPA President Ken Wasch.
With a rapidly growing and increasingly sophisticated economy, the
potential for U.S. software companies in Brazil is enormous. Let's hope
that this tremendous growth will spill over into other Latin American
countries, particularly Mexico, where the weakness in the Peso has limited
sales growth this period.

Sales data reported are from the SPA's International Data Program, and
represent total revenues in these regions of the twenty-seven primarily
US-based software firms participating in the SPA's International Data
Program. The companies submit their confidential sales data to the
accounting firm of Arthur Andersen, which prepares the report for the SPA.
Among the participants are Adobe, Borland, Claris, Lotus, Microsoft,
Software Publishing, Symantec, and the WordPerfect Division of Novell.
While U.S. companies have the dominant market share in most of these
regions, the figures reported should not be taken as an estimate of the
total market size. Rather, they represent total sales of the reporting
companies.
