Sybase Announces New Media Partners Developers Colleges

FIRST PARTNERS COLLEGE TO KICK-OFF WITH SEPTEMBER CONFERENCE

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA, July 17. 1995 -- Sybase, Inc. today announced that its
New Media Division based in Mountain View, California will spearhead the
formation of industry partnerships dedicated to empowering content
developers with the skills and tools essential to produce a new generation
of distributed content applications for interactive networks.

This program, officially named New Media Partners Developers Colleges,
operates under the unifying goal of driving excellence in interactive
content through the combined efforts of key College partners in the areas
of hardware, software, networking and systems integration. Sybase
announced the first of these colleges will commence in September with a
series of interactive television (ITV) developer seminars and workshops
jointly sponsored by Hewlett Packard, PowerTV, Scientific-Atlanta and
Sybase, Inc.

The New Media Partners Developers Colleges consists of programs designed to
enable mass production of applications for networked content delivery
systems such as interactive television and the Internet. The first college
will commence in September 1995 with a workshop to educate developers in
building interactive TV applications. It will be backed up by the first
fully integrated end-to-end interactive TV Developers Kit, consisting of
HP's MediaStream Server video server, Scientific-Atlanta's Digital Home
Communication Terminal (DHCT), the PowerTV operating system development
environment and the SYBASE Intermedia software product family, including
its recently announced SYBASE New Media Studio development environment.
This ITV developers workshop offers developers a chance to get in on the
ground floor of the ITV production industry and opens the door to
developing content for interactive video service field trials being
conducted around the world.

"The goal of these colleges is to galvanize the content industry around the
huge potential offered by ITV," said Russell Werner, vice president and
general manager of Sybase's New Media Division. "Our tactical plan is to
give developers the first server-to-set-top ITV environment that fully
reproduces a real-world ITV system, coupled with the training they need to
migrate to the world of ITV production. By partnering with leading
suppliers of video servers, set-top boxes, cable modems and video
preparation software, we're creating a new paradigm for knowledge transfer
in the digital media industry."

PowerTV continues to work closely with Sybase in supporting SYBASE
Interplay open-architecture on the PowerTV OS," said Michael Bloom,
general manager of PowerTV, Inc. "Both PowerTV and Sybase have committed
to an open-systems framework for our products and we believe this emphasis
is the most developer-friendly for the ITV market. Our joint activities at
the New Media Developers College with Scientific-Atlanta, Sybase and HP
should vividly illustrate ITVs potential and opportunities. Sybase has
taken an aggressive role in educating ISVs on interactive television and
we are excited by the opportunity to be part of this program.
