TopSpeed's Clarion for Windows Adds 32-Bit Development Option

Pompano Beach, Fl --- April 15, 1995 --- TopSpeed Corporation today
announced the addition of a 32-bit optimizing compiler to the Clarion for
Windows Rapid Application Development environment. TopSpeed shipped the
first of two scheduled beta releases of Clarion for Windows 1.5 to
developers participating in a paid subscription program. Developers can
immediately recompile 16-bit projects to run as 32-bit applications under
Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT. TopSpeed also announced support for
new Windows 95 user interface controls, which developers can incorporate
in both 32-bit and 16-bit applications.

"Our developers--the Clarion community--develop applications for
businesses, most of which won't be running Windows 95 until its official
release," said Bruce Barrington, Chairman of TopSpeed. "The subscription
program provides the flexibility for them to work in 16-bit Windows to
support their end users today, even as they test 32-bit versions of their
applications, which their end users will clamor for the day after Windows
95 ships." Accordingly, TopSpeed has devised what it calls an
"evolutionary" approach to 32-bit development.

The subscription program features Clarion for Windows 1.5. Clarion
developers don't have to switch their main development systems to a new
operating system until both they and their end users are ready. Developers
can create 32-bit executables under any version of Windows--3.1, Windows
95, or Windows NT. The development environment runs as a 16-bit windows
application, yet developers can specify a 32-bit target by choosing an
option. On Windows 3.1, the new 32-bit optimizing compiler runs under
Win32s. Developers can still utilize the Clarion for Windows 16-bit
compiler when creating 16-bit Windows 3.1 applications.

Clarion for Windows 1.5 also includes backwards compatibility to Windows
3.1 for many controls and features associated with the Windows 95 user
interface. TopSpeed is including both 16 and 32-bit support for tool tips,
property sheets, and progress bars, for example.

Clarion for Windows 1.0 was released in the fall of 1994 as the first Rapid
Application Development system for Windows featuring an optimizing
compiler. Its replaceable database drivers and full-featured data
dictionary support powerful database applications for either local or
Client/Server environments.

The Clarion language, the only Fourth Generation Language in a Windows RAD
tool, is quickly learned by new programmers, and provides easy code
maintenance. The Clarion for Windows Application Generator builds
powerful, fully customizable applications quickly, through the use of
templates. Clarion templates provide functionality equivalent to the base
object classes provided in object oriented programming environments: they
contain pre-written data and code. Clarion templates, in addition, include
another layer consisting of a user interface, enabling the Clarion
developer to customize its properties and functionality without knowing
anything about its underlying code. Clarion programmers can easily create
their own templates, maximizing code reusability for the tasks they most
often repeat from application to application. Applications developed with
Clarion for Windows are typically small, fast, and may be distributed
royalty-free.
