XEROX UNVEILS ELECTRONIC STOREFRONT FOR PRINTERS

InterDoc software uses the Internet to create new market opportunity for
printers

NEW YORK, June 27, l995 -- Xerox Corporation today announced InterDoc, an
open client/server software solution that provides easy and fast
distributed print-on-demand capabilities via the Internet. InterDoc will
make it easier for corporate in-house print departments, commercial
printers or quick print shops to set up shop on the Internet and
electronically receive and produce digital file submissions of
sophisticated documents from their customers.

InterDoc provides a state-of-the-art capability that will enable printing
services to be accessible to anyone, anywhere, at any time via the
Internet, said Frank Steenburgh, senior vice president, Xerox Production
Systems division. We believe InterDoc will provide our customers with a
competitive edge, in turnaround time and cost, to the sender and receiver.
Each print shop that licenses InterDoc has the opportunity to become a
global printing supplier on the worldwide Internet.

Developed by XSoft, the division of Xerox that develops and markets
document management software, InterDoc allows users to set up an
electronic storefront on the Internet in the form of a home page. The
InterDoc home page provides a starting point for customer interaction with
the print shop server.

This screen identifies the print shop and the services that are available
(e.g., binding or finishing). The home page and its subsequent forms are
where customers identify themselves to the system and enter job orders,
specifications and approvals.

The forms are displayed by using a World Wide Web (WWW) browser such as
NCSA's Mosaic or NetScape Communication Corporation's NetScape. Cost
estimates, job status or job cancellation also can be requested by the
customer at the home page.

To use InterDoc, the sender/customer completes a job ticket using their WWW
browser and the information requested from the print shop's home page. The
job ticket and the customer's compatible print-ready file, such as Adobe's
PostScript, which can be created under Microsoft Windows, Apple Macintosh
or UNIX, is sent via the Internet to the receiver (print shop). The
InterDoc-capable print shop then produces the document, according to the
specifications of the print job ticket attached to the file, on
high-resolution print-on-demand devices, such as the Xerox DocuTech
Publisher 135 or DocuPrint Publishing Series.

A significant feature of InterDoc is its preflight validation utility which
ensures print jobs can be successfully produced at the designated print
shop.

This preflight validation utility checks for errors in the files before
sending them to the print shop, often catching problems before they affect
the shop's production cycle. In addition, InterDoc maintains the status of
the job such as when the file was sent and file transfer acknowledgment.

For customers who have no account history with the print shop, InterDoc
displays a customer profile form to complete. Similar to most Internet
business transactions today, to place orders, customers would most likely
fax the initial order with billing and/or credit card information rather
than sending that financial information via the Internet. The print shop
can then verify the account information and the order can be completed.
This is standard practice today on the Internet and should improve over
time.

InterDoc is different from other Internet print-on-demand services in that
it uses standard HTTP protocols for moving files. This means users can
continue to work with their familiar WWW browser of choice to upload files
rather than learn more complicated file transfer methods.

In addition to the purchase of the InterDoc license, the print shop and
customer/sender will also need the following equipment:

Print Shop

InterDoc Server: a Sun SPARC server, Solaris 2.3 or higher operating
system, WWW browser and access to the Internet.

Administrator PC workstation with MS-Windows 3.1 and TCP/IP connectivity to
the InterDoc server, for the maintenance of customers and job information,
initiation of DocuPrint/DocuTech printing and the input of manual work
orders for printing.

Customer/Sender

Windows PC, Macintosh or UNIX workstation; the validation and upload
utilities included in InterDoc (available from the designated print shop);
a WWW browser and related software, and access to the Internet.

An InterDoc license is available for the U.S. list price of under $30,000
and includes preflight software; Oracle RDBMS, initial home page and
forms, administration software and one day of training. Availability is
fourth quarter 1995 in the U.S. with worldwide distribution in 1996.
