Apple Launches Next Generation of Macintosh PowerBook Computers Based on
the Sophisticated PowerPC Processor

100 MHz 603e PowerPC Processor Drives Notebook Computers to New Heights in
Performance--Enables New Solutions

CUPERTINO, California--August 28, 1995--Targeting customers from first-time
buyers to sophisticated, mobile professionals, Apple Computer, Inc. today
announced a complete renewal of its Apple Macintosh PowerBook line of
computers. Apple's new PowerBook 5000 and 2000 series are its first
notebook computers based on the advanced PowerPC 603e processor; the new
100 series models bring the performance of the previously top-of-the-line
PowerBook 500 series to Apple's most affordable notebooks. The
high-performance PowerBook 5000 series is expected to be available on
September 11, while the PowerBook 2000 and 100 series models are expected
to be available in mid-October.

By combining the computing power of the 603e processor with Apple's
traditional strengths in ease-of use, design, communications, and
hardware/software integration, Apple's new PowerBook 5000 and 2000 models
provide customers with the industry's best mobile computing solution,
regardless of the customer's desktop platform.

"These PowerBook models set new standards for the notebook computer
industry in performance, price, value, and flexibility. The 100 and 117
MHz PowerPC 603e processors in our new PowerBooks let our customers
perform tasks such as complex graphics, page layout, and sophisticated
presentations that they would never have attempted on a notebook computer
before--and we've done this without sacrificing battery life, as have many
Intel-based CISC notebooks," said Steve Andler, Apple's senior director of
mobile systems product marketing. "And because a PowerBook can't exist as
an island, we also include software that lets our customers share their
work with others easily, whether they're in their offices or on the road,
and whether their co-workers are using Macs or PCs."

Assessing Apple's new PowerBook line-up, Kimball Brown, vice president,
mobile computing, at DataQuest, said, "These new PowerBooks are
well-designed, and some of the features surpass all competitors in the
portables industry. The way Apple has integrated infrared into its
products, their exceptional battery life, and industrial design are all
excellent. The performance will drive PowerBook users wild. These
notebooks should be in huge demand."

Apple's new PowerBook 5300 models will provide industry-leading price
performance--at prices starting at around U.S. $2,200. The PowerBook 5300
family gives mainstream business customers desktop-level performance in a
compact, notebook computer.

Apple is also introducing the PowerBook 190 models, 68LC040-based
notebooks, that offer performance that, until now, was only available in
the high-end, PowerBook 500 series, starting at around U.S. $1,650.
Customers can also upgrade their PowerBook 190 models to the new PowerBook
5300 models, which helps them protect their investments. For
cost-conscious customers, such as college students, and first-time buyers,
the PowerBook 190 computers provide an affordable, complete hardware and
software solution.

For subnotebook customers, the PowerBook 2300 models offer the performance
of a 100 MHz PowerPC 603e processor in the smallest, lightest PowerBook
package. The PowerBook 2300 subnotebooks also preserve customers'
investments in current PowerBook Duo docks and peripherals, which are
compatible with the new models. The power of the PowerBook 2300 models
means sophisticated, mobile customers don't have to sacrifice performance
for small size and low weight.

PowerBook 5300 Family: The Highest-Performance PowerBook Computers The
PowerBook 5300 models are the highest-performance PowerBook computers
ever. Built around 100 and 117 MHz PowerPC 603e RISC processors, the 5300
series offers users desktop-level, PowerPC processor performance in a
compact, portable package that's a full inch smaller, and nearly a pound
lighter than Apple's previous top-of-the-line PowerBook 500 series.
PowerBook 5300 configurations start as low as U.S. $2,200. By comparison,
leading PC notebook vendors in this price range, often use slower
(50-75MHz), second-tier processors (486DX2 and DX4), reserving their
higher-end Pentium processors for units that start at well over $3,000.

Designed to meet the needs of business and higher-education customers, all
configurations of the PowerBook 5300 come with a minimum of 8 MB DRAM,
expandable to 64 MB; a 9.5-inch gray scale, or a 10.4-inch dual-scan or
active-matrix color display, and 500 MB, 750MB or 1.1 GB internal hard
drive. All configurations will ship with advanced, lithium-ion batteries,
with an estimated battery life of 3-5 hours of continuous working time per
charge. The PowerBook 5300 line also gives customers a new level of
flexibility and range of expansion options, through the adoption of
standard PC Card slots, and the new PowerBook expansion bay. With two Type
II-size (one Type III) PC Card slots, the PowerBook 5300 models let
customers customize their notebooks to meet their specific communications,
storage, and input needs, by selecting from the vast array of industry
standard, PC Card-based high-speed modems, networking cards, hard drives
and others.

In addition to PC Cards, users can also configure their PowerBook 5300 by
removing the unit's floppy disk drive from the PowerBook expansion bay,
replacing it with a variety of third-party peripheral devices, including
additional hard drives, magneto-optical, removable media drives, and
internal AC power adapters. The PowerBook 5300 models also combine
infrared technology with Apple's traditional ease-of-use, giving customers
ultra-easy, wireless file transfers. By connecting Farallon Computing's
AirDock, an inexpensive infrared receiver pod, to Apple's desktop
computers, customers can access all of their network services, including
printers, servers, and network devices, without plugging in a single
cable.

PowerBook 190 Family: The Most Affordable PowerBook Computers The PowerBook
190 models set a new value standard for portable computing. Built on a
66/33 MHZ 68LC040 processor, the PowerBook 190 family offers the
performance of Apple's high-performance PowerBook 500 series at prices
starting at around U.S. $1,650, plus a larger, color display, and an
improved Apple trackpad.

PowerBook 190 models can also be upgraded to the new PowerBook 5300 family,
so customers can protect their initial investments, by increasing their
computing power as their needs change. The upgrade options include: a
PowerPC processor logic board upgrade, infrared, video out, lithium-ion
batteries, and a 10.4-inch active-matrix color display. Because the
PowerBook 190 models use the same PC Card slots and expansion bay found in
the PowerBook 5300 line, customers can carry their investments in these
optional devices forward with them.

PowerBook 2300: The Smallest, Lightest PowerBook Computers

The PowerBook Duo 2300c brings the performance of the same 100 MHz PowerPC
processor used in the PowerBook 5300 family to the subnotebook market.
Compatible with previous Duo 200 series docks and peripherals, the new Duo
2300c models incorporate a 9.5-inch active-matrix, color display, and
Apple's improved trackpad into a 4.8 pound enclosure.

Pre-installed Software Offers Greater Value

All three new PowerBook series ship with a variety of utility,
communications, compatibility, and games programs pre-installed on the
hard drive. In addition to three new games: Spin Doctor, an arcade game,
and Super Maze Wars, a network compatible battle game, (both licensed from
Callisto Corp.), and Eric's Solitaire Sampler, Apple is also supplying two
new utilities: Floppy Disk Maker, which lets customers create a set of
system software installation disks quickly and easily, and Password
Security, which helps customers protect their systems from unauthorized
access.

New Upgrade Boards Help Customers Preserve Their Investments Apple is also
continuing its commitment to its current PowerBook customers, by offering
PowerPC processor upgrades to all current PowerBook Duo 200 and PowerBook
500 series owners. The Macintosh PowerBook Logic Board Upgrade Kit with
PowerPC 603e processor for Macintosh PowerBook Duo 200 series is a full
logic board upgrade. It offers the same processor performance as the new
PowerBook 2300 family, including a 100 MHz PowerPC 603e processor, and 8MB
of DRAM. The Macintosh PowerBook Processor Card Upgrade Kit with PowerPC
603e processor for the Macintosh PowerBook 500 series is a
dealer-installable, daughtercard upgrade, which includes 8MB DRAM on the
daughtercard. This upgrade lets the customer add additional DRAM to a
maximum of 40MB. With the upgrade installed, PowerBook 500 series
customers will enjoy the benefits of PowerPC processor performance found
in the new PowerBook 5300/100 models, for an investment of less than U.S.
$700.
