American Management Systems Announces License Agreement with Carnegie
Mellon University

Spetember 8, 1995 -- Agreement With Carnegie Mellon University's Software
Engineering Institute Increases Company's Ability to Offer Innovative
Courseware, Greatly Expanding Reach of Commercial Applications

Fairfax, VA -- American Management Systems (AMS) today announced a new
license agreement with the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) thatwill
allow the company to provide SEI's "Introduction to theCapability Maturity
Model" (CMM) courseware to both large and smallenterprises worldwide. The
CMM is a method for introducing disciplineand management to software
development that 1) reduces cycle time, 2)improves predictability, and 3)
improves quality. AMS is the firstlicensee with instructors authorized to
offer this innovativecourseware.

"We view our new SEI license as a natural extension of our commitment to
provide our clients with the best technology available to perfect both the
product and its development process," said Mark Servello, anAMS senior
principal and head of software process improvement for AMS."Our
instructors also offer significant real world experience insystems
development and delivery along with a variety of softwareprocess
improvement and information technology reengineeringtechniques, which
magnifies the effectiveness of this course to bothour clients and public
offerings."

"Since 1991, AMS has maintained a close relationship and commitment toSEI
and the principles that serve as the foundation to the CapabilityMaturity
Model," said Judy Vernick, licensing agent for SEI. "Bycreating similarly
high standards for its own process improvementtechniques and training
methods, as well as acting as a strongmarketing partner, AMS has paved the
way for the commercial success ofthe CMM courseware."

The course is the newest of AMS's SEI-related services, which began with
the company being one of the original nine licensees for the SEI's
Software Process Assessment methodology. That benchmarking technique is
still offered by AMS, in concert with SEI's newer appraisal method, the
CMM-Based Appraisal for Internal Process Improvement. The new agreement
allows AMS trainers to provide the SEIcourse not only at client sites, but
at public offerings, therebyproviding more opportunity for attendance by
the entire softwaredevelopment community.

AMS's full-spectrum consulting services provide clients strategic
information system consulting, software process management, and systems
development. These services also include instructor-led andcomputer-based
training, as well as on-site technical and non-technical consulting. AMS
has many SEI Software Process Assessment Lead Assessors and several
CMM-Based Appraisal Lead Appraisers, all of which have significant
appraisal experience and areauthorized to deliver the "Introduction to the
CMM" course.

During the past five years, AMS's process improvement consultants
haveassisted in over 40 software process improvement initiatives for
