Compaq Revolutionizes Home PCs With Innovative Sight, Sound and Motion

NEW YORK, September 13, 1995 --Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ) today
lifted home computing to unprecedented heights with the introduction of
new home PCs featuring breakthroughs in audio and video technology that
deliver the richest multimedia experience available on a PC today.

Compaq launched a broad line of competitively priced, feature-packed
multimedia products designed for the entire family -- the Compaq Presario
7100 Series (desktop), a new "value" line for price conscious buyers; and
the Compaq Presario 5500 (all-in-one PC) and Compaq Presario 9500 Series
(minitower), a "premier" line for more sophisticated users. The all-in-one
and minitower models include Compaq TrueQ Sound and Motion, a combination
of innovative audio and video technologies that surpass the capabilities
of any other home PC.

The Presario 5500 and 9500 also include SpeechMail voice recognition, an
exclusive Compaq feature that enables consumers to remotely retrieve voice
mail messages by using natural speech commands. All Presario home PCs come
standard with new, easy-to-use software interfaces to run the broad range
of software bundled with these products -- the most popular and advanced
applications available on a home PC today.

"The new Presario line is Compaq at its best -- delivering superior value
and lifestyle enhancing features that are unattainable from any other home
PC system on the market today. They are designed to benefit all members of
the family, regardless of sophistication level and budget," said Ross
Cooley, Sr. Vice President and General Manager, Compaq North America.
"With the launch of these home PCs, Compaq has broken away from the pack,
with innovations that have truly amazed everyone who has seen and heard
them in action."

COMPAQ TRUEQ SOUND AND MOTION: SENSATIONAL MULTIMEDIA

Compaq TrueQ Sound and Motion combines hardware-based MPEG video support,
3-D Spatialized surround sound, high fidelity speakers, and wavetable
synthesis audio technology (optional for Presario 5500) to dramatically
improve and enrich the experience of multimedia software, game and
educational titles. The technologies provide a home theater- like
experience on a computer, with smooth, full-screen TV-quality video, and
high fidelity, CD-quality sound.

In independent testing of the end user multimedia experience by National
Software Testing Laboratories (NSTL), a leading independent computer
testing laboratory, Compaq's TrueQ Sound and Motion technology scored
significantly higher than the video and audio technology in a comparable
Packard Bell Legend premium system. NSTL rated the Compaq TrueQ MPEG video
performance nearly double that of Packard Bell. This technology enables
the Presario 5500 and 9500 to play smooth full screen, full motion video
and CD-quality audio, which is ideal to play the MPEG titles available
today and the upcoming MPEG-oriented interactive games that demand optimum
system performance.

The broad line of new consumer products includes the latest technologies to
run the most popular programs for years to come. Priced competitively,
ranging from $1,699 to $2,999, the models come loaded with the features
consumers are asking for: Windows 95 ready; powerful Intel Pentium
processors; a plethora of hardware features including quad-speed CD-ROM
drives, high speed modems, and up to 1.6-gigabyte hard drives; more than
30 "ready-to-run" high quality software titles; and easy access to the
major on-line services, including America Online.

The new PCs are backed by Compaq's superior technical support program, and
unlike many other major vendors, each come standard with a three year
limited warranty. The new Presario home PCs also include on-screen welcome
videos, color-coded cables and are shipped ready- to-run, all for easy
set-up and installation -- under 10 minutes from out-of-the-box to running
an application.

"Compaq is maximizing its technology leadership by harnessing powerful
market forces to lead the industry in delivering superior lifestyle
computing value. Our engineers continue to drive the convergence of the
consumer electronics and PC industries, extend the use of high performance
processors and maximize the incredible strength of the Windows 95
operating system," Cooley added.
