WinLight Non-Fat Embedded Operating System from Datalight Gives Developers
Windows Features and Tools With a Fraction of The Memory Space and Cost

ARLINGTON, WA- September 13th, 1995--WinLight, a Windows work-alike
operating system designed specifically for embedded and mobile systems was
announced today at the Embedded Systems Conference in San Jose, CA. It
lets developers use standard Windows desktop development tools for
creating applications to operate with less than 256K of code space.
WinLight features a Graphical User Interface (GUI) multitasking and
protected mode like Windows.

"While a lot of embedded systems designers like some of the features of
Windows, its size in ROM and cost make it prohibitive for getting the
products to market," explained Roy Sherrill, President of Datalight.
"WinLight was designed from the start for embedded systems. Unlike Windows
it doesn't include code that is useful for a desktop but useless in an
embedded system."

Developers can write and test their code on desktop PCs using Windows
software tools. WinLight requires less engineering resources, reduces
time-to-market and has pre-existing development tools and a multitude of
fully trained programmers.

Manufacturers of handheld data collection and communications terminals,
industrial controllers, global positioning systems, medical diagnostic
units, Personal Digital Assistants and smart cellular phones will all
appreciate WinLight's small size and low cost as well as the ability to
execute out of ROM.

WinLight's Graphical User Interface (GUI) lets developers create user
friendly screens with pop-up menus, buttons and windows. An end user can
select from among "buttons" representing valid selections on each screen,
rather than using a keyboard and having to know the proper syntax. A
doctor will appreciate the ability to quickly make choices while
concentrating on the patient not the equipment. Consumer products, can
include pop-up "help screens" to increase the appeal and usability of
hand-held systems. End user input devices might include touch screens, pen
systems, track balls and cursor controls in addition to keyboards and
keypads.

WinLight is currently being used by a major international consumer products
manufacturer for a product that will be demonstrated in the first quarter
of 1996.

The WinLight Software Developer's Kit will be available for $595 in early
January of next year. License fees will vary from $12 per copy for 500 to
$6 per copy for 10,000, much lower than Windows license fees for
comparable quantities. OEMs will receive an additional 20% discount for
licensing WinLight along with ROM-DOS during 1996.

Founded in 1983, Datalight develops and distributes operating system
software for embedded and mobile systems. Original Equipment Manufacturers
throughout the world rely on Datalight software. Consumers make use of
Datalight's ROM-DOS software on a daily basis through public pay phones,
credit card terminals, in flight data collection equipment, medical
equipment, industrial control equipment, barcode readers, cellular phones,
Personal Digital Assistants, custom terminals and many other uses.
