DIGITAL FIRES WINDOWS NT WORKSTATION SALVO WITH PERSONAL WORKSTATION
PROGRAM

Celebris XL, Alpha XL Personal Workstations Set Price/performance Standard,
Targets Indirect Channel and Technical Markets

MAYNARD, Mass., September 25, 1995 -- Digital Equipment Corporation said it
is further expanding its position in the volume desktop business by
aggressively targeting the exploding market for high-performance, low-cost
Windows NT-based "personal workstations."

To support its strategy, Digital today introduced the industry's fastest
personal workstation family, based on both Intel and Digital Alpha
processors. It features PC-like distribution and pricing, interchangeable
components and a focus on technical applications.

"We're emphatically signaling to customers, and the competition, that
Digital is a major player in the market for volume desktops," said Enrico
Pesatori, vice president and general manager of Digital's Computer Systems
Division. "These new personal workstations, together with our recently
announced strategic alliance with Microsoft, our existing family of
Windows NT PCs, Alpha workstations and servers, and our strong commitment
to partners, enable Digital to build on its leadership position in the
rapidly growing Windows NT marketplace."

"The PC market is looking for more power and investment protection.
Workstation users are looking for more affordable desktop systems with
Windows-based applications. Digital is the only vendor that can meet both
of these needs with a powerful, flexible Windows NT-based platform,"
Pesatori said.

According to a report issued in April 1995 by Dataquest, a market research
firm, the market for Windows NT-based RISC workstations is projected to
grow from 80,000 units/year in 1995 to 375,000/year in 1997. The market
for Intel-based desktop systems running Windows NT is projected to grow
from 460,000 in 1995 to 1.272 million units in 1997, said Dataquest.

"Digital's family of personal workstations for Windows NT is ideal for
users who run compute intensive, graphics-intensive and/or data intensive
applications," said Jim Allchin, senior vice president, Business Systems
Division at Microsoft Corporation. "This line of Windows NT designed
workstations clearly illustrates the benefits to customers of combining a
scalable open system with a scalable, robust hardware platform."

Broadest Range of Windows NT Workstation Performance

The Celebris XL and Alpha XL personal workstations deliver the broadest
range of Windows NT Workstation performance on a single platform with
seven powerful Intel-based and Alpha-based models. Intel-based models
include single 100, 120, and 133MHz and dual 100 and 133 MHz Pentium
processors. Alpha-based models include the 233 MHz and 266 MHz versions of
the Alpha 21064 processor.

In addition, personal workstations will be upgradeable to Intel's Pentium
Pro processor and future Alpha processors when they become available.

"I am pleased Intel and Digital are working together to deliver the
benefits of Intel-based computing to Windows NT users," said Carl Everett,
senior vice president, Desktop Products Group, Intel Corporation.

The personal workstation family is highlighted by the following:

o The Windows NT operating system running on a dual
architecture, common platform design center with inter-
changeable components. Because the personal workstation
is easily upgradeable to faster Intel and Alpha processors,
and other options, customers can easily move up to higher
performance -- as their business requirements change -- by
        simply swapping their system's daughter card;

o Personal workstation performance at PC-price points. Prices
range from $2,639 to $5,995. Digital's personal workstations
deliver superior performance and price/performance. For
example, both the Alpha XL 233 and 266 outperform the Sun
20/51 (priced at approximately $12,900, U.S. list) and the
HP 715/100 workstation (priced at approximately $18,100,
U.S. list) in a series of AutoCAD benchmarks. Running the
CADalyst benchmark, the Alpha XL 233 and 266 scored 129 and
158 respectively, while the Sun 10/51 scored 76 and the HP
        715/100 scored 114.

o A focus on providing customers with complete solutions.
Digital has developed relationships with the leading
suppliers of technical applications that run on Windows NT
Workstation to optimize application performance on the new
personal workstations. These include offerings from
Autodesk, Inc., Bentley Systems Inc., Matra-Datavision Inc.
        and Parametric Technology Corp.

The personal workstation is ideal for users who use compute- and
graphics-intensive design applications, such as mechanical and electronic
design automation. Customers in technical computer-aided software
engineering, desktop publishing and financial services also will benefit
from these systems. And because the personal workstations are "born to run
Windows NT," customers also have access to their favorite productivity
applications.

More than 2,000 native Windows NT applications are available on Intel-based
systems. More than 1,200 native Windows NT applications are available on
Alpha -- six times the number available for any other RISC-based
architecture. In addition, 16-bit DOS and WIN16 shrink wrapped
applications, as well as the growing list of 32-bit Windows 95
applications, also run on Windows NT, in emulation.

Selling Strategy Provides Partners With Winning Value Proposition

The personal workstations are part of Digital's distinct approach to the
market which is highlighted by a strong partner program. The selling
strategy for the new personal workstations is based completely on indirect
channels.

The Celebris and Alpha XL personal workstations are available through a
select set of Digital's resellers, distributors and Value Added Resellers
(VARs). PC resellers will gain a platform with applications that demand
higher margins; traditional workstation resellers will benefit from higher
volumes associated with the broader PC-related market.

The company's channel recruitment strategy is aimed at the technical
market's premier VARs that target specific applications, such as those
from Autodesk, Parametric, Bentley and Matra-Datavision.

"This new selling strategy is a winner for our customers, our channel
partners and for Digital," said Pesatori. "It provides users with broad
access to the products, channel partners with the margins and revenue they
need to be successful, and Digital with the ability to leverage the
selling power of its partners."

Packaged Systems

All new Celebris XL and Alpha XL personal workstations are PCI-based, with
Windows NT Workstation factory-installed, and are available as both
building block systems and as entry level packaged systems. All systems
are immediately available.

The Intel-based entry systems include 16MB RAM, a 1.44 MB floppy disk,
keyboard and mouse. Intel-based packaged systems additionally include a
SCSI-based 1GB hard disk, a 4x CD-ROM drive, a license for Windows NT
Workstation and a PCI-based 3D video card. Single and dual processor
models include 256KB burst cache and 512KB cache, respectively.

The Alpha entry systems include 32MB RAM, a 1.44MB floppy disk drive, a 4x
CD-ROM drive, keyboard, mouse and a Windows NT Workstation license. Alpha
packaged systems additionally include a SCSI-based 1 GB hard disk, 32 MB
RAM and a PCI-based 3D video card. The 233 MHz and 266 MHz models include
512KB cache and 2MB cache, respectively.

Backed By Industry's Best Hardware Warranty, Software Support

Digital provides the industry's leading warranty for its new personal
workstations, including a comprehensive three-year hardware warranty with
one-year on-site support. Also, all personal workstations include 90 days
of advisory telephone support for the Microsoft Windows NT operating
system, as well as for application or factory-installed software purchased
from Digital and included on Digital's User Application Support product
listing.

As a result of the strategic "Alliance For Enterprise Computing" recently
announced between Digital and Microsoft, Digital is training no fewer than
1,500 Microsoft-certified engineers to complement Digital's existing 800
Microsoft-certified engineers. Digital has the largest group of
Microsoft-certified engineers in the world.

Digital Equipment Corporation is the world's leader in open client/server
solutions from personal computers to integrated worldwide information
systems. Digital's scalable Intel and Alpha platforms, storage,
networking, software and services, together with industry-focused
solutions from business partners, help organizations compete and win in
today's global marketplace.
