Farallon Introduces First Infrared Wireless Links for New Line of PowerBook
Computers

ALAMEDA, Calif., August 28, 1995 -- Farallon Computing, Inc., a leading
provider of innovative networking software and hardware, today announced
the first infrared networking capability for the new line of PowerBook
computers from Apple Computer, Inc. Farallon's AirDock infrared adapter
lets users link their infrared-equipped PowerBook computers to their
desktop Macintosh computers, and in turn, to the entire network, without
wire.

The key to AirDock is in the convenience it provides the average user in
accomplishing ordinary tasks. With AirDock, there is no hassle with cables
to connect to a desktop Macintosh or network. To set up the desktop
Macintosh, the user simply plugs the ADB-powered AirDock adapter into the
serial and ADB ports, and installs the AirPath software.

To connect, the user simply points the PowerBook at the AirDock adapter.
Instantly, the PowerBook can access the files on the desktop Macintosh, as
well as e-mail, printers and other network resources - all without
plugging in a single cable. "AirDock makes it very convenient for mobile
users to work in meetings or on the road, then instantly update documents,
send e-mail or print documents when they return to the office," said
Barbara Tien, AirDock product manager.

"Farallon's mission has always been to make personal computer networking
user friendly," said Alan Lefkof, president and CEO of Farallon. "Our
innovative AirDock offering is one of those simple products that will
enable a big boost in productivity for mobile users."

AirDock comes bundled with Farallon's AirPath software, which automatically
gives infrared-connected PowerBook computers complete access to the
network through the host Macintosh.

Smaller than a tea cup, AirDock uses the same directed infrared wireless
technology that is built into Apple's new PowerBook 5000 series computers,
so users do not have to be concerned about the transmission being picked
up by an infrared receiver in the next cube or in the next room. With the
directed infrared beam, the wireless connection range is limited to a
line-of-sight boundary and a range of six feet. Also, AirDock was
developed to meet Infrared Data Association (IrDA) specifications for
future support of an IrDA standard. (The IrDA standard has been set for
multiplatform support and compatibility for directed, point-to-point
infrared.)

Farallon's AirDock is one of the highest performing wireless infrared
products available today. At 230 kbps, it operates at a faster speed than
the infrared products of most PC-compatible notebook computers. And
AirDock is available for the Macintosh concurrently with the new
infrared-equipped PowerBook computers.
