New HP LaserJet Printer for Small Business Expected to Sell for Under $500

New LaserJet Printer Offers High-priced Features in a Low-cost Printer

PALO ALTO, Calif., Sept. 18, 1995 -- Hewlett-Packard Company today
introduced its newest personal laser printer designed for fast, high-
volume printing in small businesses -- the HP LaserJet 5L printer. The
printer is expected to sell for approximately $479 ($586 U.S. list), and
features 600 x 600 dots per inch (dpi) laser printing and a new advanced
design for faster, easier and more efficient laser printing than HP has
ever offered at this price.

"The new design allows us to pack big-printer features into a small
package," said Larry Trevarthen, a product manager at HP's North American
Consumer Products Marketing Center. "The LaserJet 5L printer redefines
personal laser printing by giving customers new levels of performance and
confidence in printing for this low price."

The LaserJet 5L printer, which replaces the HP LaserJet 4L printer,
features a slimmer, vertical design that takes up less space. The printer
is the first LaserJet printer to feature HP's new PrintSmart, a suite of
technologies that delivers faster and easier printing for Windows users.

A full-featured version of Intuit's QuickBooks 3.1, the best-selling
accounting software for small business, comes bundled with the LaserJet 5L
printer. It allows the customer to use the program 25 times, then upgrade
to the full version once they decide that QuickBooks 3.1 is the right
accounting and business management software for them. HP will include a
$10 rebate off the purchase price of the full QuickBooks 3.1 program with
every LaserJet 5L printer that ships.

SUPERIOR PRINT QUALITY

The LaserJet 5L printer features true 600 x 600 dpi printing without the
loss of performance experienced in other printing technologies.
Improvements to HP's Resolution Enhancement technology (REt) result in
smoother, sharper curves and greater clarity for text and graphics.
Combined, these technology advancements help produce print quality that
goes beyond the traditional dpi benchmark, providing exceptional image
printing, and graphics and text that do not fade, smear or flake.

Customers can choose from 26 TrueType scalable typefaces. The cost per page
is less than two cents, and EconoMode brings the cost down to one cent per
page by reducing the toner used. The printer also offers excellent print
quality on a wide variety of paper types and weights as well as on
recycled paper.

FASTER PERFORMANCE

The LaserJet 5L printer combines design and technological advancements that
significantly increase the output performance of its 4 pages- per-minute
(ppm) engine. When tested at comparable resolution levels, the LaserJet 5L
printer printed text documents of up to 32 pages as fast as 6-ppm-class
printers, and faster for full-page graphics.

This performance boost is the result of HP's Enhanced LaserJet Printing
System for Windows as well as HP's exclusive no-wait fuser technology,
which allows a document's first page to print without the warm-up time
needed by other laser printers. These technologies enable a first-page-out
time of just 20 seconds, increasing the printer's output performance
beyond its engine-speed specification.

HP's Enhanced LaserJet Printing System for Windows and HP's Memory
Enhancement technology provide customers with faster printing of complex
documents and a quicker return to application. These speed enhancements,
along with a faster processor and accelerated I/O handling, are designed
to save small-business customers time and money.

EASY TO INSTALL AND USE

HP believes the new LaserJet 5L printer is the industry's easiest laser
printer to install and use, with a setup time as quick as 15 minutes. The
printer has simple one-button operation, features an on-screen
print-status monitor and help tutorial, and is Plug-and- Play ready for
Windows 95.

The LaserJet 5L printer features 100-page input and output trays that
accommodate a wide range of media, such as postcards and envelopes. A
single-sheet feeder allows customers to print special media without
removing other media from the input tray, while an alternative straight-
paper path ensures wrinkle-free printing of envelopes, labels, special
stock and transparencies. Customers also can stack up to 10 envelopes or
sheets of custom media in the main paper tray. The printer has a
4,000-page monthly duty cycle.

RELIABLE USE AND WARRANTY FEATURES

The LaserJet 5L printer comes with HP's Express Exchange warranty, which
covers parts and labor and ensures next-business-day replacement of the
printer for a full year. The printer is Energy Star certified for low
power consumption, with a PowerSave sleep mode that conserves even more
power when the printer is not being used.
