HP Announces Fault-Tolerant AdvanceStack Networking Products

HP Named Leader in 10Base-T Workgroup Managed Hubs

PALO ALTO, Calif., Sept. 11, 1995 -- Hewlett-Packard Company today
announced its enhanced HP AdvanceStack 10Base-T Hub-24 and Hub-48 -- the
first in a series of fault-tolerant AdvanceStack products that will ensure
network uptime for mission-critical applications.

The hubs can be connected to HP's new easy-to-add, external AdvanceStack
Redundant Power Supply, which provides chassis-hub reliability in a
flexible, economical and manageable stackable solution.

HP continues to lead in the rapidly expanding 10Base-T business. During the
first half of 1995, HP's market share for installed-base workgroup managed
hubs surged to 22 percent -- pulling it well ahead of Bay Networks and
3Com, which is lagging at 17 percent, according to the Dell'Oro Group of
Menlo Park, Calif.

"With over 6.5 million ports installed, HP continues to be the largest
supplier of stackable Ethernet hubs," said Tam Dell'Oro, principal,
Dell'Oro Group. "Dell'Oro Group attributes HP's success in this hotly
competitive market segment to their relentless focus on supporting their
customers' needs for a total office solution that extends beyond just the
hubs."

Fault Tolerant Solution

The redundant power supply, which supports up to four HP AdvanceStack
devices, protects networks against device power failures and unstable AC
power conditions. This fault-tolerance functionality is particularly
important to workgroups for whom reliability and uptime are critical.

"Redundant power adds to the AdvanceStack line's performance and
flexibility," said Gary L. McAnally, general manager of HP's Roseville
(Calif.) Networks Division. "It is one of several AdvanceStack products
that allow network managers to add network functionality as their needs
evolve and expand."

HP's AdvanceStack Redundant Power Supply has redundant components
throughout, including two critical components -- the AC lines and DC-to-DC
channels. If any pathway or component on the redundant power supply fails,
the supply still provides power. In addition, flashing LEDs indicate a
loss of redundancy, with no interruption in device operation.

The HP AdvanceStack Redundant Power Supply offers far more protection than
the competition. For example, 3Com's redundant power supply supports only
one DC-to-DC converter per device: If one converter fails, the device
connected to that channel fails.

Reliability of HP's redundant power supply is ensured by a five-year
warranty, the industry's longest.

Reliability of the AdvanceStack hubs is ensured by HP's industry- leading,
limited, lifetime warranty. It provides on-site service for the first five
years. After that, the hub may be returned to the factory for repair for
its lifetime.

In addition to supporting a redundant power supply, HP AdvanceStack hubs
are equipped with an expansion slot that lets network managers add
functionality as rapidly as their needs change. Expansion-slot modules can
be purchased separately to add functionality such as SNMP management,
security, routing, connection to high-speed backbones and remote access.
HP AdvanceStack hubs offer a solution affordable enough for small networks
and capable enough for large-enterprise networks.
