Legato Teams Up With Industry Leaders To Deliver Enterprise Storage
Management

PALO ALTO, CA, SEPT. 5, 1995-- Legato Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: LGTO) today
announced a series of strategic relationships centered on delivering
mission-critical network storage management services for corporate
enterprises. Advanced data management services partnerships include a
systems management agreement with Tivoli; application support arrangements
with Oracle and SAP; Archive agreements with Data General, Digital
Equipment Corporation, Innovus, Siemens Nixdorf, and Silicon Graphics; and
an HSM for NetWare offering with Imagery Software.

"Client/server computing faces many challenges related to network storage
management," said Louis C. Cole, president and CEO of Legato Systems, Inc.
"Our vision since the founding of the Company has been to develop the
industry's most comprehensive network storage management solution. With
NetWorker, we have overcome one of the central problems plaguing the
industry-- how to build a consistent network-wide storage management
software solution that is scalable and modular enough to meet the needs of
small workgroups, as well as multi-platform enterprises. We have achieved
this goal through our NetWorker OEMs, coupled with a rich set of external
interfaces that allow us to work cooperatively with key industry leaders,"
concluded Cole.

Systems Management Frameworks

Customers are asking for tighter integration between systems management and
network storage management. Legato and Tivoli are jointly developing a
Tivoli/Plus module for NetWorker for delivery in the fourth quarter of
1995 that will integrate Legato's network storage management solution for
multi-platform enterprises with Tivoli's systems management solution, the
Tivoli Management Environment. With this module, network administrators
will be able to manage system, network and storage management services
from a central Tivoli-based management station.

"We are excited about bringing the unique benefits of Tivoli/Plus to
NetWorker," said Mike O'Rourke, general manager of open solutions products
for Tivoli Systems Inc. "Tivoli/Plus goes well beyond 'standard' product
integration by enabling customers to manage and control the NetWorker
product itself using TME capabilities. This significantly enhances the
installation, availability and performance of NetWorker and ultimately
improves the productivity of the systems administrators who manage the
environment

In previous network management initiatives, Legato NetWorker was chosen as
a strategic component of Sun Microsystems' Solstice Enterprise Management
strategy, Digital Equipments' POLYCENTER systems management suite, and
Siemens Nixdorf's Transview Control Center system management suite.
Recently, Legato announced it is now shipping its SNMP Module for
NetWorker, which includes support for SunNet Manager and HP OpenView.

"Digital's UNIX customers need solutions for managing diverse network
environments that include lots of distributed storage," stated Peter
George, manager of Digital's storage software business. "Combining
NetWorker with our 64-bit Alpha servers provides this capability and more
to our Digital customers."

Application Support

Legato and SAP have entered into an agreement to provide backup and
recovery services for SAP's family of R/3 applications. Through Legato's
Professional Services organization, Legato will offer an SAP Toolkit that
provides all the necessary software to interface NetWorker to SAP R/3. The
SAP Toolkit provides a NetWorker-based (BACKINT) driver program,
compatible with SAP BACKINT specification for Solaris and AIX/6000
platforms.

Legato has developed a module which connects the Oracle Parallel
Backup/Restore Utility (obackup) to NetWorker. The module is called the
Legato NetWorker Oracle Database Module (ODM). The combination of Oracle's
obackup and Legato's ODM will result in vastly increased performance, and
improved ease- of-use compared to existing solutions.

Currently, Legato offers a series of application toolkits through its
Professional Services organization for the following suppliers: Oracle,
Informix and SAP. To protect data on Sybase systems, Legato endorses
DataTools of Palo Alto, California, who today markets, sells and supports
a NetWorker- compatible module for Sybase databases.

Data Archive

Today, Legato announced agreements with five of its NetWorker OEMs to
license Legato's Archive source code. Each NetWorker OEM has ported
NetWorker Archive to their existing NetWorker-based solutions for MIPs and
Alpha platforms. Participating OEMs include Data General, Digital
Equipment Corporation, Innovus, Siemens Nixdorf, and Silicon Graphics.

Joe Mettee, director of product marketing for storage products at Data
General, said, "Data General has had an OEM relationship with Legato
Systems since 1992, and we have been impressed with the flexibility and
scalability of the NetWorker product. We are pleased to now offer Legato's
data archive product as an option to Data General's DG/UX operating
system. The Legato product set allows us to offer our customers a truly
integrated and open approach to storage management."

"This new archive application extends the high-performance backup and
recovery in NetWorker today, while allowing users to preserve their
existing investment in storage. Legato's NetWorker Archive application is
especially important to Digital customers that require long-term storage
for business critical or project-related data," stated Peter George,
manager of Digital's storage software business.

File Migration and HSM

Today, Legato and Imagery Software, an Eastman Kodak subsidiary, announced
an agreement to jointly produce an HSM application for the NetWorker for
NetWare market. Imagery was selected by Novell as their strategic partner
to develop advanced storage management services for NetWare 4, such as
HCSS (High Capacity Storage System) and MSS (Mass Storage System). Under
the technology licensing and marketing agreement, Legato will re-sell
Imagery's NDS-aware GroupStore HSM technology in the fourth quarter of
1995, and will subsequently deliver a version of GroupStore for Legato's
NetWorker for NetWare product line in the first quarter of 1996.

In parallel with this effort, Legato intends to deliver an HSM option
(NetWorker HSMTM) for its NetWorker for UNIX product line slated for the
first quarter of 1996. Legato is currently negotiating licensing
agreements for NetWorker HSM with its OEMs.

Analyst Perspective

Rob Enderle, an industry analyst with Dataquest in San Jose, CA, said,
"Customers can no longer afford to protect the data residing only on file
and applications servers. In today's modern networks data capacity is
exploding, data is becoming more distributed, and administration cost is
skyrocketing. Customers need storage management solutions that combine the
features and reliability of centralized mainframe storage management with
distributed client/server computing. Legato is a leader in distributed
enterprise- class storage management software for the client/server
market. These new relationships strengthen that leadership position."

Legato Partnership Programs

The new licensing agreements announced today expand Legato's partnership
with its NetWorker OEMs. NetWorker OEMs license source code from Legato,
port NetWorker to their specific operating system and hardware platforms
and then sell, market, and support the solution through their distribution
channels. NetWorker OEMs include Banyan Systems, Data General, Digital
Equipment Corporation, Fujitsu, ICL, Innovus (HP platform), Intergraph,
Sequent, Siemens Nixdorf, Silicon Graphics, Sony, SunSoft, and Unisys.

Banyan Systems' Enterprise Backup and Restore

As an example of a Legato OEM program, on June 27, 1995, Banyan Systems
announced the availability of Enterprise Backup and Restore (EBR) for
VINES. Banyan Systems became a NetWorker OEM in September, 1993. Banyan's
EBR is fully compatible with all versions of Legato NetWorker, including
all OEM versions.

BACKGROUND ON LEGATO SYSTEMS

Legato Systems, Inc., headquartered in Palo Alto, Calif., develops, markets
and supports network storage management software products for
heterogeneous client/server computing environments. Legato believes it is
currently a technology leader in the network storage management software
market because of the heterogeneity, scalability, performance and ease of
use of its software products. The Company's NetWorker software supports
many storage management server platforms and can accommodate a variety of
clients, servers and storage devices. Legato's long-term strategy is to
create an integrated set of solutions centered around storage management
that enhance and simplify network computing as a whole.

The Company's storage management solutions are designed to support a wide
range of client, servers and storage devices. Server and desktop computer
clients supported include DOS, NetWare, NT, OS/2, UNIX and Windows. A
NetWorker storage management server can operate on NetWare systems, and on
UNIX systems offered by Data General, Digital, Hewlett-Packard, ICL, IBM,
Intergraph, SCO, Sequent, Siemens Nixdorf, Silicon Graphics, Sony, Sun and
Unisys. Storage devices supported include a wide variety of tape drives,
and optical and tape robotic storage devices. All NetWorker server
platforms interoperate with all supported clients. As a result, customers
can mix and match clients and servers as necessary to meet their specific
requirements.

To address the needs of remote offices and small departments, the Company
developed a special version of NetWorker called "Staccato." This is a
highly automated product that utilizes autochangers to minimize the need
for administrative intervention and is suitable for semi-autonomous sites
that have small network servers that themselves contain all the data under
management. Staccato can be remotely administered from NetWorker
administrative stations on the enterprise network, and is currently
available for the NetWare platform.

LEGATO'S VISION

Legato's vision is based upon the premise that the protection of network-
based data is rapidly becoming a strategic purchasing decision for
businesses of all sizes. The phenomenal growth of client/server computing,
disparate platforms and the proliferation of mission-critical
applications, databases, and network management systems are forcing CIOs,
IS and network managers to re- think their storage management strategies.
As networks grow and expand, network managers need solutions that can keep
up with change, without having to radically change, update or discard
their network storage management infrastructure.

NETWORKER ARCHITECTURE

Legato's award-winning software product, NetWorker, solves the network
storage management puzzle by delivering a consistent, global solution
designed to protect data across multiple hardware platforms, operating
systems and storage devices for today's modern networks. NetWorker's
scalable, modular and high performance solution protects more data in less
time across a wider range of desktops, workstations and servers than any
other solution.

Legato's multi-platform network storage management software suite is the
industry's de-facto standard for automated network management for
heterogeneous, client/server enterprises.

NetWorker is composed of several unique technologies: Legato's exclusive
enabler technology provides electronic keys to most of NetWorker's
features, and add-on options provide easier addition of new storage
services without having to re-install software or take down the server.

Legato's exclusive intelligent client technology provides user and
administrator-initiated backup, restore and archive services for systems
running NetWare, DOS, Windows, Windows NT, OS/2, and UNIX. Intelligent
client technology utilizes the local CPU of the system to be protected,
thereby "pushing" data across the network while processing multiple data
paths simultaneously. The end benefit is the ability to protect more
information in a shorter time-frame. In addition, intelligent client
technology provides administrators with the ability to centrally manage
any NetWorker storage management server from any supported workstation
regardless of platform type.

Legato's exclusive OpenTape technology provides administrators with a
consistent and interchangeable tape format across NetWare, DOS, Windows,
Windows NT, OS/2 and UNIX. Legato's database technology ensures high
performance, as well as automated and reliable backup and restore of
Oracle, Informix, SAP and Sybase systems.

LAN-to-mainframe technology provides administrators with the option to
integrate network backup with traditional mainframe storage management.
This technology links NetWorker to popular IBM and Digital mainframes via
third party software.

Network management (SNMP) technology provides administrators with the
option to integrate NetWorker with popular network management systems such
as HP OpenView and Sun Solstice Network Manager.
