NEXT-GENERATION OF TEAM COMPUTING APPLICATIONS PROVIDE POWER FOR
INDIVIDUALS AND TEAMS

HOUSTON, Sept. 5, 1995 -- Lotus Development Corp. today announced that
SmartSuite 96 Edition for Windows 95 will ship in November. SmartSuite 96,
which is being introduced at the Houston Area League (HAL) PC User Group
meeting, includes completely rearchitected 32- bit versions of the Word
Pro word processor, Freelance Graphics presentation graphics application,
Approach database and SmartCenter suite command center, as well as updated
versions of the 1-2-3 spreadsheet, Organizer personal and group scheduler,
and ScreenCam multimedia tool. Lotus also announced that it will expand
its customers' ability to communicate electronically by providing America
Online Inc.'s Internet access service, Global Network Navigator, directly
from within SmartSuite.

"We have taken aggressive efforts to exploit the Windows 95 technology,
while continuing to lead the market with our best-of-breed applications
that enhance the productivity of individuals working in teams," said Jim
Manzi, IBM senior vice president and CEO of Lotus Development Corp. "We
are confident that the combination of this rearchitected suite and the
additional focus and resources of IBM's worldwide sales and marketing
organization will allow us to expand our share of the desktop market as
users migrate to 32-bit operating system platforms."

SMARTSUITE 96 EXPLOITS THE WINDOWS 95 ENVIRONMENT AND PROMOTES TEAM
COMPUTING

SmartSuite's Windows 95 applications exploit the new operating system by
leveraging Windows 95 operating system enhancements in areas such as
32-bit multitasking, long file names, OLE 2.0 support and integration with
the Windows 95 desktop shell. SmartSuite 96 Edition for Windows 95 extends
the capabilities of desktop applications in the areas of advanced team
computing, productivity and application integration features.

TEAM COMPUTING DELIVERS SUPERIOR RESULTS FASTER

*TEAMREVIEW streamlines the manual task of reviewing and editing files.
Simple and accessible mark-up tools allow reviewers to make edits or
suggestions electronically, and authors to quickly and easily incorporate
them.

*TEAMCONSOLIDATE enables users to combine edits made by multiple people
into one file.

*VERSIONING lets users store edited versions of a document, along with a
history of changes, in a single file.

*TEAMSHOW, a cost-effective presentation delivery and collaboration tool,
allows users to lead a remote audience through a presentation screen show,
reducing travel time and expense.

*TEAMMAIL allows users to send an entire file or selected pages from a file
via E-mail. Routing allows users to view, edit or comment on a document,
one at a time, so that each user on the route receives the document with
all the edits and comments of the previous team members.

*TEAMSECURITY helps users maintain database security with ease and
flexibility by enabling them to provide customized access privileges for
individual team members or entire groups.

*NOTESFLOW, an extension of Notes/FX technology, enables users to build
customized workflow applications by tightly integrating SmartSuite into
Notes applications by adding commands to SmartSuite application menus.

PRODUCTIVITY AND INTEGRATION FEATURES INCREASE EFFECTIVENESS AND
EFFICIENCY

*SMARTCENTER, the suite command center, provides users with a single place
to access all their work. Designed to look and work like "file cabinet
drawers," SmartCenter enables users to access and launch all applications,
documents, SmartMasters, and help and electronic documentation. In
addition, SmartCenter provides a direct path to frequently accessed
information such as Organizer appointments, Address Book, E-mail, Notes
databases and the Internet.

*THE LOTUS USER INTERFACE consists of the Lotus InfoBox, SmartIcons, a
Status Bar and a Common Menu Structure, all of which make using and
learning the applications easy.

*THE LOTUS INFOBOX streamlines everyday tasks, providing a one-stop
shopping tool for changing the attributes of a selected item. All editing
is live -- so formatting changes are displayed as the user makes them.

*SMARTMASTERS provide more than 200 applications and templates to help
users create complete new documents and applications from scratch in
minutes for everyday important business tasks such as contact management,
letters, budgets, presentations, business plans and more. Several
cross-application SmartMasters are also included.

*LOTUSSCRIPT, the BASIC programming language common across the Lotus
Windows 95 desktop applications, enables developers to efficiently create
their own business solutions by leveraging the millions of lines of code
already written and tested in SmartSuite. LotusScript's unique
object-oriented extensions provide developers an easy way to create
maintainable software, and to develop it in teams.

*OLE 2.0, supported throughout the SmartSuite applications, makes it easy
to transfer information between applications, and create and edit compound
documents.

NEW 32-BIT APPLICATIONS COMPLETELY REARCHITECTED FOR A NEW OPERATING
SYSTEM

Lotus Word Pro enables users to work together more effectively by
streamlining the process of creating, reviewing and editing shared files.
Key features such as TeamReview, TeamConsolidate and Versioning automate
the common practice of editing and reviewing documents, enabling users to
easily collaborate on documents and track edits.

Among Word Pro's innovative concepts are SmartMasters, which assist users
in creating professional-looking documents; Divider Tabs, which provide an
easy way to organize and navigate through long documents; Spell Check,
which highlights all misspelled words at once, and enables users to spell
check and edit a document at the same time; and the Lotus Expert, a new,
personalized help system that enables users to ask for help by typing in a
question using their own words.

Lotus Freelance Graphics transforms presentation graphics into an everyday
visual communications tool for users. Freelance Graphics provides users
with the best start-to-finish process for developing plans, reports and
proposals that double as presentations. Among the many new team computing
features, TeamReview enables teams to collaborate electronically on
presentations, and TeamShow supports the delivery of remote,
point-to-point, online screen show presentations.

Content SmartMasters provide users with suggested content for a wide
variety of business topics, while Smart Diagramming provides a means for
clarifying key points with easy-to-use visuals.

Lotus Approach 96 Edition for Windows 95 enables everyone on the business
team -- from sales people and business managers, to financial analysts --
to track, manage and analyze information. Approach makes it possible for
users to become productive quickly due to its intuitive interface and
built-in usability. Advanced Approach integration features such as the new
LotusScript, 1-2-3 integration, as well as container and server support
for OLE 2.0 enable users to create highly customized cross-product
business solutions. Team computing features provide users with seamless
and secure access to shared information regardless of file format.

LOTUS PROVIDES EASY UPGRADE PATH TO WINDOWS 95

SmartSuite 96 Edition for Windows 95 will ship with the current versions of
1-2-3, Organizer and ScreenCam, which work smoothly in the Windows 95
environment. 1-2-3 for Windows 95, which will enter beta in October, is a
complete 32-bit rearchitecture of the world's most popular spreadsheet.
1-2-3 for Windows 95 builds upon the current version's leading team
computing features -- Version Manager, Range Routing and Notes/FX
capabilities -- to include TeamConsolidate, TeamMail, the Lotus InfoBox
and NotesFlow.

Organizer for Windows 95, which will enter beta early in the first quarter
of 1996, will extend the industry's leading personal and group scheduler
features to include tighter Notes integration, support for OLE 2.0 in the
Organizer Notepad, and other innovative features. ScreenCam, an
interactive tool for creating ad hoc and formal audio/visual
presentations, will also be included in SmartSuite 96. A free upgrade
coupon will be included in SmartSuite 96 Edition for Windows 95 for each
of the 32-bit editions.

SMARTSUITE EXTENDS THE TEAM GLOBALLY WITH DIRECT ACCESS TO THE INTERNET

Global Network Navigator (GNN), a new Internet access service, will be
included in SmartSuite 96 Edition for Windows 95 as well as SmartSuite 4.0
for Windows 3.1 in North America, providing users with a worldwide
communications and file-sharing solution for dispersed team members who
choose to use the Internet. The GNN service, a complete Internet solution,
includes browser access to the Worldwide Web, FTP, Gopher, E-mail and
newsgroups, personal publishing, content and a free trial period.

The GNN service will exploit Internet application-specific features in
SmartSuite. For example, Word Pro's HTML support will make web publishing
as easy as creating any paper document. Word Pro also includes an
integrated FTP client that lets users import or export files from
worldwide FTP servers as easily as if from local hard drives. In addition,
Word Pro initiates a Worldwide Webcrawler search based on selected text
with only one click.

Freelance Graphics 96 presentations can be published to the Internet in a
Web format allowing viewers to page through the presentation live on the
Internet with any Web browser. Freelance Graphics supports the ability to
post native Freelance Graphics presentation files on the Web, and includes
a link to the Lotus Home Page from which Internet users can download and
install the Freelance Mobile Screen Show player.

The CD-ROM edition of SmartSuite 96 includes an indexed Approach database
of Web sites as well as a customized application that will enable users to
search for sites matching criteria that they are interested in.
