NEW MEDIA REDEFINES EASE-OF-USE FOR PCMCIA MODEMS

The Perils of Installing and Using PC Card Moderns Alleviated by Suite of
Support Services and Diagnostic Software

Irvine, Calif., August 30, 1995, New Media, a leading developer and
manufacturer of portable computing solutions, today announced a full suite
of support services and diagnostic software targeted to users of the
company's family of PC Card fax/modems. With this full complement of
support services and software, New Media guarantees that users can install
and use their modems quickly and easily.

New Media's family of support tools is the industry's most comprehensive,
including Auto-Install software, remote diagnostic and system analysis
tools, true Plug & Play client support and Zero Consumption Advanced Power
Management capabilities. New Media also offers a host of remote support
services, including BBS, CompuServe. Internet, and fax back services as
well as a 24-hour 7-day technical support hotline.

Carl Perkins, CEO and president of New Media, explains the company's
dedication to the PC Card modem market. "By far the lion's share of the
PCMCIA marketplace is made up of modem sales. Well over 50 percent of the
PC Cards in use today are modems. Modems represent a significant share of
technical support problems. Users have questions that encompass everything
from properly setting up the modem to figuring out the application
software that is included with the modem," he said.

New Media's charter is to provide the market with the easiest to use and
most reliable portable computing solutions. "Our commitment to
plug-and-play and ease-of-use extends to our fax/modem PC Cards," Perkins
explained. "That's because installing and using a PCMCIA modem can be a
daunting task."

When installing a PC Card modem, users must be prepared to know a great
deal of information about their computers, ranging from data about CPU,
memory and card and socket services to what system resources are free such
as COM ports, Interrupts (IRQ's), and addresses. New Media's suite of
support services and diagnostic software is designed to take the burden of
installing the modem out of the users hands -- and then assures the user
that the card will become a truly productive tool by guaranteeing
continued ease of-use.

Auto-Install Makes Modem Installation Painless

New Media's Auto Install software guarantees that users will get their
modem up and running on the first try. Auto Install conducts the following
tasks in order to bring up the modem flawlessly every time.

* Checks for valid card and socket services and provides the appropriate
messaging such as, "Card and socket services not present, please install
manufacturer's card and socket services or contact New Media technical
support for assistance."

* Evaluates the system's card and socket services and installs New Media's
client driver if the system's super client software is inappropriate or
missing.

* Installs New Media's COM port to monitor the modem for Zero Consumption
Advanced Power Management.

* Installs application software for modem and fax communications under one
consistent interface and sets up the appropriate modem control strings and
modifies settings to include New Media's BBS phone number for additional
services.

Remote Diagnostic and System Resource Analysis Tools

Remote diagnostics tools are available to analyze the following conditions
and guarantee the integrity of the modem:

* COM port test - verifies that a valid COM port has been assigned to the
modem.

* AT command test - sends an AT command to the modem verifying it's
operation.

* Modem version test - verifies that the modem driver software is
appropriate for the current New Media modem hardware.

* Firmware, hardware version, digital loopback and analog loopback test -
fully
checks the integrity of the modem hardware.

With remote diagnostics customers can fully test their PC Card modems,
taking the guesswork out of de-bugging problems remotely.

True Plug & Play Client Support

New Media's true plug-and-play client driver support assures users that the
PC Card modem can be inserted or removed from the laptop at any time. With
true plug-and-play clients in place, the user will never face a situation
where the PC Card modem doesn't work because it was inserted, removed, or
placed in the wrong slot.

Zero Consumption Advanced Power Management

"The best place to store a PCMCIA modem is in a laptop. Most laptops have
two very accommodating ports in which to store a card, and most users use
them for just that," said Perkins.

High speed modems use as much as a watt of power, which is typically
one-quarter of the power required to run the whole laptop. Just storing
the modem in a PCMCIA slot can shorten operating time by as much as one
hour To resolve this problem, New Media developed Zero Consumption
Advanced Power Management. Zero Consumption Advanced Power Management is a
feature built in to the company's true plug-and-play client driver which
analyzes COM port usage, and turns the modem port completely off when the
modem is not being accessed, essentially reducing power usage to zero when
the modem is inactive. No other PCMCIA manufacturer provides this
feature.

Remote Support Services

New Media supports its modem PC Cards with a full suite of remote support
services: Knowledge Bank, Sniffer, BBS, fax back, CompuServe, Internet,
and 24-hour 7-day technical support hotline.

Every New Media product ships with the Knowledge Bank, a diskette
containing problem/solution sets for all New Media products, information
on the company's BBS and faxback services and even other manufacturer's
phone numbers. The Knowledge Bank also contains a program called Sniffer.
Sniffer analyzes all of the resources in a user's laptop and provides an
analysis that can be faxed in or downloaded to New Media's BBS. From this
information, the company's technical support team can assess virtually any
problem and respond in one full business day.

Full-Line of Modems

New Media's full line of modems include the 28.8 NetSurfer, 14.4 NetSurfer
and 14.4 NetSurfer International approved data/fax modems for Windows, DOS
and OS/2 environments.

New Media's family of modems also includes the world's first PC Card "soft
modem," the 14.4 WinSurfer, a low-cost, full-featured, Windows-based
fax/modem for portable computers.
