Novell Continues Its Commitment to Advance Its Industry-Standard NetWare
Directory Services

PROVO, Utah -- September 13, 1995 -- Continuing its commitment to advance
NetWare Directory Services (NDS) as the de facto standard for networks of
all sizes, Novell, Inc. today announced the availability of the NDS
Enhancement Pack. This pack is a collection of updates and utilities to
increase the performance and manageability of NetWare 4 networks. Free of
charge to NetWare 4 customers, the pack features updated NetWare Directory
Services to improve performance and to extend the distributed database's
functionality, adding maintenance, status and repair utilities. When
implemented, the pack lets NetWare users benefit from faster log-in and
authentication to network services, speeding access to NetWare resources
through NDS. Network administrators can manage and monitor directory
environments more easily with newly created utilities that expose
additional NDS status information, making NDS easier to support in
enterprise environments.

NDS is fast becoming the de facto world standard for distributed network
directories -- a combination yellow and white pages that enables network
users to easily identify, access and connect with information resources
and other people. NDS also provides network managers with a single point
of administration for the entire network. Other benefits include
dramatically reduced network ownership and administration costs for
businesses of all sizes. NDS is being leveraged by over 22,000 developers
to create applications that take advantage of its global distributed
database.

"While competitors' directories are either too complicated or operate in a
limited name service mode, Novell's NDS has set the standard for
ease-of-use and time/money savings," said William Donahoo, senior director
of product marketing for Novell's Operating Systems Division. "Novell will
continue to aggressively advance our NetWare services by evolving NDS and
delivering innovative products such as this NDS Enhancement Pack."

"The NDS Enhancement Pack adds functionality to the industry's de facto
directory service," said Sandy Stevens, Novell Operating Systems Division
senior product manager for NetWare Directory Services. "In response to
customer requests for additional NDS status information, we've updated the
NDS infrastructure to extend its reporting capabilities. We've also begun
creating utilities that leverage NDS's new information to streamline
management tasks. Novell will expand the Enhancement Pack's new utilities
in future versions of NetWare 4."

Superior Performance, Data Synchronization

The new Directory Services NLM affords superior performance and eases user
access to NetWare's Directory Services by updating information more
quickly and accurately across enterprise environments. Enhanced data
tracking and synchronization processes allow an administrator to monitor
replication information across servers. These updated processes record
network events that affect directory synchronization and integrity, such
as the temporary failure of a wide-area communication link.

The NDS Enhancement Pack features utilities to let administrators easily
manage and monitor NDS databases. These utilities track and display the
newly exposed NDS synchronization information so administrators can
quickly determine the status of the NDS database. These prototype
utilities provide the same functionality as upcoming Novell NDS management
tools.

The NDS Enhancement Pack features the following NetWare server components
and client utilities in addition to comprehensive documentation:

DS.NLM: Directory Services for NetWare 4.1
DSREPAIR.NLM: NDS repair utility for NetWare 4.1
    DSMAINT.NLM: Directory Service maintenance utility
REPAIR.NLM: NDS repair NLM for NetWare 4.0x versions

Availability

Beginning this week, the NDS Enhancement Pack will be available free of
charge through the NetWire# forum on CompuServe (GO NETWIRE) and the
Internet's World Wide Web (http://www.novell.com). Customers can also
obtain the NDS Enhancement Pack from Novell authorized resellers, Novell
