Novell Announces WordPerfect 6.1 for Windows SGML Edition

Bridges the Gap From Mainstream Word Processing to SGML Authoring

OREM, Utah -- Sept. 5, 1995 -- Novell, Inc. today announced WordPerfect 6.1
for Windows SGML Edition, the all-in-one Standard Generalized Markup
Language (SGML) authoring solution and the only complete SGML offering
integrated into a mainstream word processor. The SGML Edition is designed
for users who need to create SGML documents including publishing houses,
government agencies and law firms that are adopting SGML as their standard
for document storage and interchange.

"Users familiar with the interface in WordPerfect 6.1 for Windows, as well
as those familiar with writing and reading SGML files, will require little
training," said Dave Harkness, product marketing director for Novell's
electronic publishing tools. "Document-intensive businesses see SGML as a
solution to create documents that are independent of any hardware,
software or operating system. The SGML Edition is proof of Novell's
commitment to deliver tools that support international standards."

About SGML

SGML is an International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard
for document description, or "structure." SGML is a non-proprietary format
that lets users create structured documents that can be stored and
exchanged among different systems. For example, an SGML document can be
stored in a database or publishing tool without needing to be reformatted
for a different system each time it needs to be routed or shared.

"SGML is not just for technical publishing and is truly a standard for
information interoperability," said Mary LaPlante, executive director of
SGML Open, a non-profit, international consortium of companies dedicated
to accelerating the further adoption, application and implementation of
SGML. "As one of the largest mainstream software companies, Novell's
support of SGML is an indication of the standard's growth into mainstream
acceptance. SGML Open is pleased to welcome Novell as the newest member of
our association."

All the Functionality and Familiarity of WordPerfect

WordPerfect 6.1 for Windows SGML Edition incorporates a complete SGML
solution so no separate editing application is needed. This edition of
WordPerfect contains all of the word processing functionality, as well as
QuickTasks, Coaches, templates and macros that make it easier to write
SGML documents. The graphical interface also simplifies the writing and
converting of both regular documents and structured SGML documents.

Writing, Formatting and Reading SGML Files is Easier

SGML is defined by a Document Type Definition (DTD) which determines the
structure and the rules for marking up a document. WordPerfect 6.1 for
Windows SGML Edition supports and provides the user with a broad range of
industry DTDs and the ability to use a user-defined DTD specific to the
needs of an organization. Many industries, such as government,
manufacturing and pharmaceutical, currently use pre- defined DTDs.

Document structure such as titles, headers, footers and paragraphs are
preserved when each element in the document is identified and "tagged."
Logic Chaining with Interactive Validation walks the user through the
tagging process of an SGML document. Users will save an enormous amount of
time when creating large documents with the SGML Edition's macro language
and tagging functionalities to add or change tags and attributes.

Error Reporting saves time and prevents mistakes when an Error Report is
executed while creating or tagging an SGML document. The Error Report will
automatically check a document for missing or improperly placed tags and
lists the errors in a pop-up window for the user to easily find and
correct.
