Objectshare Product Plans for ParcPlace-Digitalk Converged Smalltalk
Platform (VanGogh)

San Jose, CA, August 28, 1995 - At the ParcPlace-Digitalk users conference
PPS-Digitalk announced general directions for their products. This
announcement will describe Objectshare System Inc's product plans.
PPSDigitalk has announced that they will separately this fall release
Visual Smalltalk (VST) 3.1 and VisualWorks 2.5. Later, the platforms will
converge in a product now code named VanGogh. PPS-Digitalk said VanGogh
would ship in the second quarter of 1996.

Some facts about the converged VanGogh platform have been announced. Our
understanding of the announcements is that VanGogh will:

o Be based on the PPS portable virtual machine
o Will have the event-driven architecture and native widgets from VST
o Will offer compatibility with VisualWorks applications
o Will host the PARTS Workbench
o Will have SLL technology from Digitalk
o Will offer Windows95 capability
o Team/V will be part of the offering

Objectshare Plans

Objectshare has announced that we will support our customers in their need
for continuity of applications and powerful tools. This includes
WindowBuilder Pro/V and the associated UI component interface and
integration API, the UI component reuse facility CompositePane, and the
high-level controls for use in WindowBuilder Pro/V and PARTS.

For VST and VSE 3.1

We will release WindowBuilder Pro/V for 3.1 soon after the release of VST
3.1. We will also update Subpanes/V and the WidgetKit series for VST 3.1.
We will support all the Win95 features provided by VST.

For VanGogh

We will have another version of WindowBuilder Pro/V, Subpanes/V and the
WidgetKit series for the VanGogh release. We expect that WidowBuilder
Pro/V for VanGogh will be the most powerful, most productive UI builder
available. We plan to support the following:

o Two way code generation between WBPro/V built Visual Smalltalk
  applications and VanGogh applications.
o We will interoperate with VanGogh's native GUI builder.
o We will move the WindowBuilder Pro/V UI component interface and
  integration API to VanGogh.
o We will offer our line of high level components for the appropriate
  component API and for PARTS.
o We will strive to maintain existing component interfaces and
protocols to further ease the transition.

WindowBuilder Pro/V customers have enjoyed smooth compatibility and porting
of their user interface components over the generations of Digitalk
Smalltalk. We will provide a smooth path to VanGogh. Availability in
VanGogh of the Digitalk event model and Window classes (for PARTS
compatibility) make compatibility or translation a simpler task than some
other systems we have experienced. WindowBuilder Pro/V and the associated
add-on components have developed a substantial customer base and are held
in very high regard. We expect this acceptance to continue in the VanGogh
era. We recommend that developers working on VST applications use
WindowBuilder Pro/V and add-on components.

As PPS-Digitalk announces more technical information we will be able to
describe in more detail our path. We are working closely with PPSDigitalk
to integrate these capabilities.
