Software Sales to Latin America Jump 49% in Second Half of 1995

Software Sales to Brazil Increase by 168%

SEPTEMBER 21, 1995 (Washington, DC) - The Software Publishers
Association(SPA) announced today that sales of personal computer
applications by US publishers reached $35 million in Brazil for the first
two quarters of 1995, a 168% increase over the first half of 1994. The
Latin American market boasted an overall increase in software revenues of
49%, bringing year-to-date sales to $89 million. Unit sales for Latin
America were up 75% from the first half of last year.

"OTHER LATIN AMERICAN" COUNTRIES SHOW STRONG SALES INCREASES

SPA sales reports for Latin America distinguish three separate regions:
Brazil, Mexico, and all other Latin America countries. While sales in the
Brazilian market continued to increase sharply in the Q2 '95 period
(revenues up 91% over Q2 '94), the other Latin American countries also
showed significant revenue increases. Unit sales for these countries were
up 65% from Q2 '94, while software sales dollars rose to $17.4 million (up
30% from Q2 '94). For the first half of 1995, these Latin American
countries brought in revenue increases of 77% over the first two quarters
of 1994, bringing market revenues to $40.4 million.

The US market in Mexico felt the significant effects of the Peso's
decreased value. Though year-to-date unit sales only dropped to 603,565
(merely 3% higher than the first half of 1994), the revenues for this same
time period reflected a drop to $12.5 million -- resulting in a revenue
decrease of 43%

WINDOWS APPLICATION SALES CONTINUE TO DOMINATE LATIN AMERICAN MARKET

Following the trend of the first quarter of 1995, Windows sales continue to
eclipse all other software sales for the region. Year-to-date sales of
Windows applications in Latin America reached $89.5 million, with Windows
applications accounting for 92% of total software sales in the first half
of the year.

Macintosh applications continued to fade in this region. Total Mac
application sales declined nearly 37% from Q2 '94, bringing the revenue
total to $525,012 for Q2 '95.

"Clearly, the positive increases for the majority of the Latin American
software market indicate that this region is rapidly becoming a major
growth area for US software publishers," said SPA President, Ken Wasch.
"The continual surge of the Brazilian market in particular, gives every
indication that the US should consider it among the top countries for
potential sales."

Sales data reported are from the SPA's International Data Program, and
represent total revenues in these regions of the forty primarily US-based
software firms participating in the SPA's International Data Program. The
companies submit their confidential sales data to the accounting firm of
Arthur Andersen, which prepares the report for the SPA. Among the
participants are Borland, Claris, Lotus, Microsoft, Software Publishing,
Symantec, and the WordPerfect Division of Novell. While US companies have
the dominant market share in most of these regions, the figures reported
should not be taken as an estimate of the total market size. Rather, they
represent total sales of the reporting companies.
