Software Sales Figures for Asia/Pacific Reach $325 Million in Second
Quarter 1995

Sales Up 94% for the Region From 1994 Levels

SEPTEMBER 21, 1995(Washington, DC) The Software Publishers Association
(SPA) announced today that sales of personal computer application software
reached $325 million in the Asia/Pacific region during the second quarter
of 1995. This figure resulted in a revenue increase of 94% over the second
quarter of 1994. In addition, unit sales increased 175% for the quarter
and 150% for the half.

JAPAN MAINTAINS THE LEAD, BUT SINGAPORE AND TAIWAN MAKE GREAT STRIDES

Sales growth in Japan continued to be very strong for Q2 '95. For the
quarter, application software sales by US firms totaled $216.2 million, an
increase of 121% from Q2 '94. However, even that strength pales beside the
195% unit growth shown for Q2 95. Japan is now nearly twice as large a
market for US software as Germany, the next largest. For the first half of
the year, sales in Japan were up 76%, and units increased 152%, reaching
revenues of $376.3 million.

While sales in Australia grew 17% over the quarter to $44.5 million, sales
in New Zealand virtually exploded at an increased rate of 171% to $10
million. For the first half of this year, New Zealand revenues doubled
over the first half of 1994 - reaching $14.4 million from $7.2 million in
94.

MACINTOSH STILL STRONG IN THE REGION

As with most markets reported by US publishers, Windows software makes up
the majority of the market in the Asia/Pacific region. However, Macintosh
software continues to show its relatively strong position in the region,
taking 13% of overall Asia/Pacific software sales during the second
quarter and 18% of all sales in Japan. The Macintosh software share in
Japan has grown from only 13% of sales in Q1 94.

"The emerging markets in the Asia/Pacific exemplify the potential growth
for US software publishers," said Ken Wasch, President of the Software
Publishers Association. "While we must continue to press efforts to
eliminate the software piracy plaguing this region, that software sales in
countries such as Taiwan have doubled from this time last year indicates
progress in reaching these crucial markets."

Sales data reported are from the SPA's International Data Program and
represent total revenues in these regions of the twenty-seven US-based
software firms participating in the SPA's International Data Program. The
companies submit their confidential sales data to the accounting firm of
Arthur Andersen, which prepares the report for the SPA. Among the
participants are Borland, Claris, Lotus, Microsoft, Software Publishing,
and Symantec. While US companies have the dominant market share in most of
these regions, the figures reported should not be taken as an estimate of
the total market size. Rather, they represent total sales of the reporting
companies.
