EXPLORING THE INTERNET: FREE ONLINE CLASS SPARKS WORLDWIDE INTEREST

The sign that welcomes visitors to Spectrum's Virtual University reads:
"The World Meets Here. . ." This fall, the online campus will live up to
that motto as people from 96 countries dust off their note- books and
prepare to meet in a remarkable global classroom.

Since it was announced last month that a free Internet workshop will be
hosted this fall on Spectrum's virtual campus, enrollments have streamed
in from around the world. The "students" include educa- tors, legislators,
white-collar professionals, foreign diplomats, and even staff members from
the United Nations who are anxious to learn practical ways to gain
information from the global Internet.

Developing countries are enthusiastic about the workshop, says Amber
Lawrence, Spectrum's media relations director. "In Brazil, newspapers keep
writing about us and people keep enrolling," she said. "We've also been
written up in China, Australia, Zaire, and Russia."

"Exploring The Internet" starts October 9 and is being offered free to the
public by Spectrum Universal, a nonprofit organization. Organizers say the
goal of the class is to raise public awareness and provide greater access
to the information-rich highways of cyberspace.

The course will provide a hands-on introduction to Internet tools and help
users learn to navigate cyberspace. Weekly lessons will be available on
the World Wide Wed and by ordinary e-mail so that anyone with a mailbox on
the Internet can participate.

Lead instructor Richard De A'Morelli, who has been developing the program
for over a year, announced this week that the class will be divided into
small "focus groups", allowing students to concentrate on specific goals
that they want to to accomplish during the workshop.

Group members will be able to share tips and discuss problems with one
another during the course, De A'Morelli explained. Friend- ships could
also develop among students around the world.

"This is the classroom of the future," De A'Morelli predicted.

Those wishing to enroll in the free workshop can obtain a regis- tration
form by sending an e-mail request to register@pacificnet.net or by calling
the virtual university's 24-hour registration voice line at (818)
899-7888. Enrollment deadline is Friday, September 29th.
