SPYGLASS SELLS VDA TOOLS TO FORTNER RESEARCH; SALE ALLOWS COMPANY TO
CONCENTRATE ON ITS INTERNET BUSINESS INITIATIVE

Naperville, Ill. -- Monday, September 11, 1995 -- Spyglass Inc. (NASDAQ:
SPYG) announced today that it has sold to an affiliate of Fortner
Research, a Sterling-Va.-based software developer, the company's visual
data analysis (VDA) tools. The VDA tools were sold for approximately $1
million, which will contribute an estimated $.08 - $.10 earnings per share
for the fiscal year ended September 30, on a fully diluted basis, net of
taxes and costs associated with the transaction. Spyglass previously
announced its intentions to dispose of the VDA tools to concentrate its
business on developing Web-enabling technologies, including Enhanced
Mosaic and the recently introduced Spyglass Server.

According to Douglas P. Colbeth, Spyglass president and CEO, the agreement
represents an important step in Spyglass' evolution articulated during the
company's initial public offering in late June. "Disposition of the tools
has been a part of our plan as we move Spyglass from a scientific and
engineering application software developer to a company focusing on
Web-component technologies," he said. "We've been pleased with the
performance of the product line and it was key to enabling our development
organization to gain an understanding of the graphical nature of the
World-Wide Web. Fortner Research is in a good position to make the VDA
tools more successful as they focus their resources on the product line."

Colbeth outlined the three main benefits to Spyglass from the sale of the
tools:

The development, support and marketing staff involved with the
VDA tools will transition to the Spyglass Web client and server
   marketing and product development teams.

The disposition allows the company to concentrate fully on its
mission to provide Web-enabling technologies to OEMs, VARs and
   distributors.

The proceeds provide the company with additional funds to support
its business initiatives, including improving the company's
   development, marketing and sales infrastructure.

Brand Fortner, chairman of Fortner Research, plans to continue development
of the VDA tools. "Spyglass has built a healthy customer base for the VDA
tools," Fortner said. "That's a big asset for us that we want to maintain
by providing customers with upgrades to the present versions and adding
new technology when and where appropriate. Customers can rest assured they
will continue to receive strong product support from Fortner Research."

Fortner did not specify when any new releases of the VDA tools would ship,
but he said new development of the products will begin as soon as assets
of the products are transferred to Fortner Research. According to Fortner,
the VDA tools will continue to carry the Spyglass name in conjunction with
the products for six months.

The Spyglass VDA family of products includes Spyglass Plot, Spyglass
Transform and Spyglass Slicer. These products are available for Microsoft
Windows and Unix platforms. Spyglass Plot and Spyglass Transform are
available for Macintosh as well. The tools are designed to help scientists
and engineers graphically analyze column, matrix or volumetric data. In
1991, Spyglass Transform won the Eddy (Editors' Choice Award) from MacUser
magazine for best scientific/engineering tool.
