S&S offers downloadable anti virus scanner to PC users upgrading to Windows
95

Company offers FindVirus to help resolve installation glitch that prevents
thousands from installing Windows 95, introduce US users to Dr. Solomon's
Anti-Virus Toolkit

BURLINGTON, MASS., Sept. 6, 1995 -- S&S Software International Inc. is
offering a downloadable anti-virus scanner to assist personal computer
users upgrading to Windows 95.

S&S offers the scanner to help resolve a problem that prevents thousands of
users from installing Windows 95.

The scanner also introduces PC users in the United States to "DR. SOLOMON'S
ANTI-VIRUS TOOLKIT," which nearly 3 million users worldwide rely on to
detect and remove more than 6,700 known viruses on desktop, notebook and
network computers.

S&S just introduced new versions of the award-winning TOOLKIT for Windows,
DOS, NetWare and OS/2.

According to Microsoft, users installing Windows 95 from floppy disks may
corrupt Disk 2 during installation if the computer
is infected with a boot-sector virus.

Microsoft believes the problem afflicts less than one percent of people
that have purchased Windows 95. However, with more than one million copies
sold since August 24, the installation glitch has already caused problems
for many users.

"Users are obviously relying on anti-virus software that is not up to
date," said Dr. Alan Solomon, chairman of S&S.

"The anti-virus research team at S&S identifies 150 to 200 new viruses
every month, and anti-virus software must be regularly updated to ensure
it properly protects the system," said Solomon.

Users may obtain the scanner from S&S by downloading the file
"DSAVT751.ZIP" from the company's CompuServe forum (Go Drsolomon), World
Wide Web site (http://www.drsolomon.com) or BBS (617-229-8804).

Users may also download the scanner from Ziffnet "Tech Tips" forum (Go
Ziffnet) and the special Virus Awareness Day forum on CompuServe (Go
Virusday).

The downloadable version of FindVirus runs under DOS 3.1 and higher. Users
downloading the software must phone S&S to unlock the file.

S&S is a co-sponsor of Virus Awareness Day, a national event that aims to
diminish the spread of computer viruses. Among other events, the company
will make educational presentations for visitors to The Computer Museum in
Boston, and is donating technical support services to callers of a special
toll downloadable line, 1-800-492-1849.

FindVirus Scanner

The scanner, FINDVIRUS is the heart of the TOOLKIT. It detects and
identifies viruses in files, Master Boot Records and boot sectors by
recognizing patterns of code and relying on an extensive database of virus
information.

FINDVIRUS features the new "advanced heuristic analysis" capabilities built
into the TOOLKITS introduced by S&S in August. The heuristics detect
unknown viruses by flagging suspicious code.

An integral part of FINDVIRUS is the Generic Decryption Engine, which
detects polymorphic viruses. These encrypt themselves and alter their
appearance each time they infect a file.

FINDVIRUS also scans inside files archived and compressed with PKZip, ARJ,
ARC, PKLite, LZExe and ICE. This enables users to check for viruses in
executable files attached to electronic mail, stored on diskette,
distributed on CD-ROMs, or downloaded from on-line services or the
Internet.
