Harvard Pilgrim Selects Sybase For Corporate Data Warehouse

Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare Teams With Sybase to Create Client/Server
Solutions to Gain Competitive Advantage

Emeryville, CA, September 11, 1995 -- Sybase, Inc., the Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced that Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare,
the largest healthcare maintenance organization (HMO) in New England, has
selected Sybase software and professional services to create a corporate
data warehouse to meet growing business demands. A 100- gigabyte corporate
data warehouse will enable Harvard Pilgrim to streamline operations and
provide the highest quality care in the most efficient and cost-effective
way possible. Harvard Pilgrim has selected Sybase SQL Server 10,
Replication Server, and a comprehensive consulting and education program
from Sybase Professional Services to design and implement the data
warehouse.

Cecilia Claudio, CIO of Harvard Pilgrim, said, "Harvard Pilgrim believes in
an aggressive and progressive use of information technologies to gain
strategic advantages in the very competitive healthcare market. We
selected Sybase because they are a technology leader, but just as
important because they offered the sort of strategic business partnership
that we seek. Sybase was willing to enter into a risk sharing relationship
with us to provide the resources and expertise needed to ensure our
success in the long-term. With Sybase, commitment and support are not idle
rhetoric, but are integral to the company philosophy, from the
highest-level executives and throughout the organization."

Jeff Karp, director of Sybase Healthcare Industry Solutions Group, said,
"Harvard Pilgrim is a world-class healthcare provider that recognizes
technology as a strategic asset. To remain competitive in the growing
healthcare industry, market leaders like Harvard Pilgrim must be agile,
aggressive, and forward-thinking in their efforts to create value for
their members. With a dedicated team that understands how healthcare
delivery is changing, Sybase is able to creatively partner with customers
to match our u nique technology with real- world requirements. We look
forward to a long and productive partnership with Harvard Pilgrim.

The Data Warehouse

Harvard Pilgrim was created through a recent merger between Harvard
Community Health Plan and Pilgrim Healthcare. Harvard Pilgrim selected
Sybase products and services to develop a strategic corporate data
warehouse that will integrate the disparate technologies and legacy
systems that exist throughout this newly merged organization. The
corporate data warehouse will enable centralized data management while
providing flexible, distributed access and views of the information. As a
result, Harvard Pilgrim can streamline operations and provide the highest
quality care in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible.

Harvard Pilgrim selected Sybase as the backbone to its integrated corporate
data warehouse, breaking away from the traditional hardware- oriented
approach in favor of a solution that adapts more easily to its specific
business needs. The corporate data warehouse, optimized by the Sybase open
architecture, will integrate, store, and distribute vast amounts of
information gathered from a variety of disparate data sources. The data
warehouse will store up to 100 gigabytes of information on an HP T500 and
will be accessed through individual databases created using Sybase
Replication Server stored on two HP K400 workgroup servers.

The data warehouse will initially be accessed by two strategic business
units, the Clinical Quality Management group (CQM), and the Actuarial,
Treasury, and Underwriting group (ATU). In the initial phase, the CQM
workgroup server will be accessed by approximately 50 users, while the ATU
workgroup server will be accessed by 30 to 40 users. Windows-based PCs
will be the clients for both applications.

CQM users will access timely information in the data warehouse to run ad
hoc analyses that track clinical outcomes and determine best clinical
practices, enabling Harvard Pilgrim to provide the highest quality care
possible. ATU will run standardized reports using the information
available in the data warehouse to better price their services, allowing
Harvard Pilgrim to keep premiums competitive, a critical business
advantage in the managed care market.

Sybase Professional Services and Harvard Pilgrim

Critical to the success of this effort was Sybase Professional Services,
the company's consulting business. Together, Professional Services and
Harvard Pilgrim developed a plan to ensure that the technology solution
met the customers specific business needs. A joint development team
consisting of Sybase Professional Services and the Harvard Pilgrim IS
staff are working to deliver applications to the CQM and ATU business
units by fall of this year. This joint development team is designing,
building, testing, and implementing the corporate data warehouse. The team
is using an integrated risk management plan of formal classroom education
and informal skills transfer to the Harvard Pilgrim staff. This approach
will ensure a seamless flow of information and a smooth development
process.

"The partnership that was created through the architectural process, using
Sybase's SAFE framework, enabled Professional Services to understand
Harvard Pilgrim's business needs and to create a technology solution that
will ensure Harvard Pilgrim's continued market leadership," Steve Sharp,
Vice President, Sybase Professional Services, said. "As market forces
require the healthcare industry to make investments in strategic
information systems, organizations like Sybase Professional Services will
provide the client/server expertise that many healthcare organizations
require to join the client/server revolution. Our goal for Harvard Pilgrim
is to empower their people with the technical capacity to keep Harvard
Pilgrim on the cutting edge."
