Norton AntiVirus Scan Available on Symantec's BBS & FTP Site, Compuserve,
America Online and Microsoft Network

CUPERTINO, Calif. -- September 1, 1995 -- Symantec Corporation
(NASDAQ:SYMC) today announced the availability of the Norton AntiVirus
scan on Symantec's BBS and FTP Site, Compuserve, America Online and
Microsoft Network. Symantec is offering the free DOS scan as a public
service to PC users who are not currently protected by an antivirus
program and who are upgrading to Windows 95.

The only way to proactively protect the PC against virus infection is to
use antivirus software which regularly scans for and eliminates viruses.
As part of a Pre-Installation Tuneup process, users need to make sure
their PC's are free of virus infection before installing Windows 95.

Microsoft has recently reported that Windows 95 Install Disk #2 can be
corrupted during the installation process if the user's machine is already
infected with a boot sector virus. Isolated customer reports to Microsoft
do not report any damage either to data or the PC, however, the Windows 95
installation process cannot proceed. Users who regularly use an antivirus
program, or who take advantage of the free NAV scan available online, can
detect and eliminate boot sector viruses and can complete a successful
installation of Windows 95.

"This report from Microsoft strongly demonstrates the need for daily
antivirus scanning and detection," said Ellen Taylor, Symantec's vice
president of desktop utilities. "New and advanced users who are moving to
Windows 95 will want to take advantage of the Norton AntiVirus scan
available online."

Symantec is the industry leader in virus detection rates. Norton AntiVirus
3.0 for DOS and Windows (NAV 3.0) and the newly released Norton AntiVirus
for Windows 95 (NAV/Win 95) scan for over 5,300 known virus signatures,
including Jerusalem, Michelangelo, Stoned, Stealth and Mutation Engine
viruses. NAV 3.0 and NAV/Win 95 offer the fastest scan rates, averaging
100 MB in seconds.

The Norton AntiVirus scan is accessible via Symantec's BBS and FTP sites,
Compuserve, America Online and Microsoft Network. Symantec's BBS can be
reached at (503) 484-6699 (300, 1200 and 2400 baud modems); and (503)
484-6669 (9600 and 14400 baud modems); FTP address is FTP.SYMANTEC.COM. On
Compuserve, America Online and Microsoft Network users should go to the
Symantec Forums and look in the Norton AntiVirus section for NAVSCANZ.EXE
(self-extracting ZIP file).

Users who have Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 and have not yet installed
Windows 95 and want to do an antivirus scan prior to installation can boot
their system from a clean bootable floppy, insert the NAV/Windows 95
Emergency Disk #2, type NAVBOOT /CFG, press enter and the scan will start.
This is another way to make sure that the user's hard drive is free from
viruses prior to installing Windows 95.
