INSTALLATION

WinAccess can be placed into any directory you wish. The program
does require that any file that the program will be starting be on your DOS
path. There are two system files that are needed for WinAccess to work
properly, Winacs.ini will be created during the first run of the program.
The file 235.sys ( include on the disk) must be placed in the same directory
as WinAccess. Included with the shareware version is the PIF file for the DOS
shell.

FILES INCLUDED IN SHARWARE VERSION

WINACS.EXE -- main program
WINACS.INI -- required system file(created by WinAccess)
235.SYS -- hidden system file
DOSPRMPT.PIF -- PIF for DOS shell
WINACS.WRI -- this text file
WINACS.TXT -- ASCII text version of WINACS.WRI
REGIST.FRM -- registration form

ADVANTAGES TO REGISTERED USERS

The registered version includes extensive on line help and key board
accelerators. Plus registered users will receive any and all future versions
of WinAccess at a greatly reduced cost.

USING WINACCESS

WinAccess is controlled by two passwords. When WinAccesss is first
started they are set to "user" and "master". WinAccess is case senative so
"User" is not the same as "user"(by the way do not include the " " when
typing in the passwords). The user password will allow the user of
WinAccess to start selected programs (four standard and four user defined).
The user is not allowed to change which programs are to be started.
When WinAccess is started the user will be presented with a menu bar. On the
menu bar only the FILE and HELP options are enabled. Under the FILE option
are three options - RUN,SAVE(not enabled),EXIT. Clicking on RUN opens the
access code enty box. If the proper access code is entered the PROGRAMS
option on the main menu will be enabled. Clicking on PROGRAMS will reveal
two options STANDARD APPS and CUSTOM APPS. STANDARD APPS includes Winfile,
Control Panel, PIF edit, and DOS shell. CUSTOM APPS includes four
applications that you define.
The other password is for the master control. This password enables
all of WinAccess options. The master user has all the rights of a regular
users plus the EDIT and SAVE options are enabled.
SAVE is used to save any changes to either the user or master passwords.
If you exit before you save any changes WinAccess will ask if you want to
save them before exiting. At this point you can save them or cancel and keep
the old passwords intact.
EDIT has five possible choices USER PASSWORD, MASTER PASSWORD,
STANDARD APPS, CUSTOM APPS and OPTIONS.
USER PASSWORD and MASTER PASSWORD are used to change the user or
master passwords.
STANDARD APPS is used to change the file name that WinAccess calls
for the four standard applications. This is helpfull in that you can rename
and hide these files to help control who has access to them.
CUSTOM APPS allows you to include up to four applications of your
own choosing. In defining a user application you type in the menu title as
you wish it to appear on the menu and the name that starts that application.
OPTIONS opens a dialog box with two check box options AUTOSAVE and
CLOSE ON SELECT. When AUTOSAVE is checked all changes to either password
are saved to the file without prompting the user. Selecting CLOSE ON SELECT
will cause WinAccess to close itself down after a program is selected. This
is helpful if you only use WinAccess occasionally to start one program.

CLOSING COMMENTS

Just a few last closing thoughts and tips. WinAccess was first developed to
controll who had access to the hard drives at the local college computer
lab. It doesn't mess with DOS bios or attempt to controll access from DOS
itself. It is more to protect your system from the uneducated. With
WinAccess you can save yourself the worry losing files because someone
decided to figure out how WinFile works on there own.

The file WINACS.INI holds system information such as the current file names
and other settings. It wouldn't be a bad idea to make this file hidden. If
for some reason the two system files are deleted WinAccess will reset itself
back to the system default values, but your user defined information will be
lost. You may want to include a loop in your autoexec.bat which makes access
to the DOS command line a little harder. To do this include these lines to
the end of your autoexec.bat.

	:start -- start of loop
win : -- start Windows ( : after win stops opening screen )
goto start -- after exiting Windows return to start

This is the first release of WinAccess, while I did quite a bit of testing,
there's no way to test on ever type of computer. WinAccess should work on
any setup from a 286 running Windows 3.0 on up. If you run into problems
please let me know.
