 SPITFIRE v3.5 Report
;

Listed below are some of the most commonly asked questions and
the most common problems regarding the installation and operation of
SPITFIRE v3.5. I trust this information will be helpful.

1) QUESTION (Problem): I installed SPITFIRE v3.5 and everything went
just fine except my display files are all messed up now.

ANSWER: The first copy of SF34_35.EXE (dated 07-15-94) made an
assumption that the lines in display files would not exceed 255
characters and thus it will work just fine in such case. However,
SF34_35 will mess up display files with line lengths greater than 255
characters. I will suggest that you download SF34_35.ZIP (dated
07-20-94) from Buffalo Creek's BBS and use it. I apologize to each
of you who have messed up display files from using SF34_35 (dated
07-15-94).

2) QUESTION: I hear the dial tone and the operator message when I log
on locally. This didn't happen with previous copies of SPITFIRE.

ANSWER: You can easily solve this problem by configuring the 'Off
Hook String' as ATM0H1.

3) QUESTION: My security level is lowered to 5 each time that I log
on my board. What in the world is wrong?

ANSWER: The subscription dates in SFUSERS.DAT are configured
improperly. The correct configuration is to set the subscription
date as the date the subscription expires. For example, if a
caller's subscription expires on December 1, 1994, then the
subscription date would be set as 12-01-94.

When a caller logs on SPITFIRE, then the subscription date is
checked. In the event the subscription date is the current date or
older, then SPITFIRE adjusts the caller's security to the configured
'expiration security'.

4) QUESTION: SPITFIRE will not allow my callers to upload using the
internal Zmodem.

ANSWER: This is caused by the modem being configured to use
XON/XOFF. You will have to get XON/XOFF turned off in your modem and
only use RTS/CTS.

5) QUESTION: The node chat locks up when a caller pages another
caller. What is wrong?

ANSWER: There has to be 1 RAM drive installed on your system. Then
each node accesses that same RAM drive. The lock up is caused by
each node accessing a different RAM drive.

 SPITFIRE v3.5 Problems
;

Over the years I have received several thousand messages which tell
me all about a 'bug' in SPITFIRE (smiling). About 98.5% of the time
the 'bug' is really operator error. However, we have found a REAL
BUG in SPITFIRE v3.5. When entering a message in a Message
Conference which is toggled as a netmail conference, there is a
certain sequence of events which will can cause the caller's security
level to be reduced to -112. This problem has been found and
corrected. The corrected copy is within SF35-1.ZIP on Buffalo
Creek's BBS.

Another problem which seems to occur on certain systems (not all) is
the modem initialization process. I believe that I have found and
fixed that problem as well. The corrected copy is within SF35-1.ZIP
on Buffalo Creek's BBS. In fact, I think the corrected copy works
better (now) than any previous copy of SPITFIRE.

I am surely sorry for any inconvenience these problems may have caused
you. I do not understand how we can spend 6 months developing a
SPITFIRE upgrade and have over 35 Sysops testing the software and
still have a few bugs. It is an embarrassment to me. The positive
side of it is we have these problems fixed.

SFNET - SPITFIRE 'Exclusive' Mail Network Progressing
;

I am simply pleased. SFNET is quickly becoming a very important,
positive and constructive part of the SPITFIRE project. I am not
sure that I know how to express just how pleased I am with SFNET.

SFNET has served to restore my belief that SPITFIRE Sysops are
(for the most part) wonderful people. Participating in SFNET reminds
me of the early SPITFIRE days when we all worked together. It is
truly a refreshing change.

I want to thank all SFNET participants for working to make SFNET
a very special mail network. SFNET is a SPITFIRE 'Exclusive' Mail
Network that we call can be proud of. Thank you.

Until next time, may God bless you...

 SPITFIRE V3.5 IS RELEASED!!
;

As most Sysops are aware, July was a busy time for Buffalo Creek
Software. SPITFIRE v3.5 was released!! The Woltz family formed an
assembly line which included everyone from the youngest member to the
oldest (and just guess who that might be!). Together they worked as
a team to compile, package and stamp each of the SPITFIRE upgrades to
ensure a prompt deliver from their house to yours. I think that is
appropriate at this time to thank everyone of the Woltz "crew" for
helping speed the deliver of our SPITFIRE v3.5. So, THANKS Mike,
Ann, Mason, Jesse, and Amanda! Your efforts are truly appreciated!!

Below is a list which highlights some of the new features found in
SPITFIRE v3.5, for anyone who may have not yet upgraded.

ZModem internal transfer protocol was added.
Caller ID information recorded to SPITFIRE log files.
   Greatly enhanced node chat feature.
Capability to receive incoming FAX calls.
   Greater support for subscription BBS.
Extended download directories feature using FA<x>.TXT
   Expanded CD rom support.
Unlimited file description length when using FILE_ID.DIZ
NUCALLER file can be made available to all new callers to the BBS.
SPITFIRE Support for 784 Message Conferences.
Greater IRQ / base address support.
   Masked password for greater security.
Enhanced <B>rowse message feature with preview capability for Sysop.
Found text is highlighted when performing a file area text search.
Range line deletion when deleting contents of a message.
Configurable Message Entry Security for each Message Conference.
Partial name search when entering messages in local Message Conferences.

As you can see from the list, SPITFIRE is well worth the upgrade
fee. Whoops, SPITFIRE doesn't have an upgrade fee...what a bargain
this is! The only fee involved is the reimbursement cost of disk,
manual printing and postage in the event you choose not to download
your upgrade. (Believe me, everyone should get a new manual!) So if
you haven't returned your upgrade notice, do it now so you too can
begin taking advantage of the new features now available in SPITFIRE
v3.5!

 SFNET - SYSOP INVITATION
;

Mike Woltz and Buffalo Creek Software would like to extend a
special invitation to all SPITFIRE Sysops interested in joining
SFNET. SFNET is a SPITFIRE 'Exclusive' Mail System that was
organized just recently in response to a growing demand for a mail
system solely dedicated to SPITFIRE Sysops.

However, there appears to be some confusion with regard to
joining SFNET. This may possibly be due to the fact that the
SHILOH software used in SFNET is still in the developmental phase.
(Although, the SHILOH software, in the BCS tradition, works very
well and processes messages with lightening speed!) Just so there
is no misunderstanding, there is no select group of SPITFIRE Sysops
testing the SHILOH software. Any SPITFIRE Sysop may, and in fact,
is encouraged to join SFNET.

If you are interested in participating in SFNET, please contact
an Area Code Hub for your area from the SFNET Node List below. If
there is no Area Code Hub, you may contact Mike Woltz on Buffalo
Creek's BBS to obtain the software and assistance in setting up
your BBS for participation in SFNET.

͸
 SFNET - COMPANION UTILITIES
;

 SFNETBUL

SFNETBUL is a handy utility for tracking the volume of incoming
and outgoing messages for nodes participating in SFNET. SFNETBUL
reads the SHILOH log file and calculates the statistics contained in
the log file. These statistics are then used to create a BBS
bulletin which informs callers of the total number of messages
imported to and exported from the BBS. SFNETBUL creates .BBS, .CLR
and .RIP display screens.

The ASCII bulletin which is created looks like this:

   Ŀ
     Ŀ
The Ultimate House Of Fun BBS, Node A0301000
SFNET, Spitfire .Qwk Net-Mail System Statistics
           From 07-07-94 at 16:05:57 to 07-07-94 at 18:18:03

     Ŀ Ŀ
      Total Messages Imported 1668
      Total Messages Exported 1693

SFNETBUL comes with multiple configuration files that allow the
Sysop to create ANSI bulletins in an assortment of colors. The
various configuration files include red, blue, cyan, magenta, green
and the default SFNETBUL.CFG uses gray. With a little creative batch
file processing it would be quite easy to shuffle the configuration
files so that the different color bulletins rotate on the BBS.

SFNETBUL comes to us from T&T Software and is written by Timothy
J. Ward. SFNETBUL, like many of Tim's utilities, is released as
GIVEWARE. GIVEWARE is basically freeware, except that those who
continue to use the program are asked to make a donation (of any
amount they choose) to The Missing Child Project. What a super idea!

 QWKALIAS

QWKALIAS is a utility written by Timothy J. Ward for SFNET nodes
which allow the use of aliases on their BBS. Since SFNET does not
allow the use of aliases, this presented a dilemma for Sysops and
callers on boards where aliases were allowed. How could they
participate in SFNET when they could not post a message under the
alias name used to log on the BBS? QWKALIAS is the solution!!

QWKALIAS uses two configuration files. The QWKALIAS.CFG is used
to configure the name of the *.QWK and *.REP packets created by
SHILOH when importing and exporting mail. It also provides an
optional feature of generating a log file. ALIAS.CFG is used to
enter the alias and the real name so that the conversion can take
place.

QWKALIAS, if configured to do so, will convert the alias name in
the FROM field of the message header to the caller's real name when
messages are exported from the BBS and uploaded to the SFNET hub.
Similarly, if configured to do so, QWKALIAS will convert the real
name in the TO field of the message header of messages to be imported
to the BBS back to the alias. It is possible for the Sysop to
configure QWKALIAS so that the conversion only occurs when the
messages are exported and/or imported. However, it is recommended
that the conversion occur on both incoming and outgoing messages or
it is possible that messages may not be properly received.

Even though QWKALIAS was developed for use with SFNET, it has the
potential of being used with any QWK packet based mail system.

QWKALIAS, like SFNETBUL, is released as GIVEWARE! Wouldn't it be
terrific if a missing child was found through contributions by
SPITFIRE Sysops?

 QWKBACK

QWKBACK is designed for use by SFNET Area Code Hubs. What QWKBACK
does is create a backup of each nodes QWK mail packet. Therefore, in
the event the mail run is not completed successfully, the hub has a
backup of the mail packet which the node can download and import into
the SPITFIRE message base manually.

QWKBACK is not really a utility but rather a series of batch files
which allow the mail packets to be copied to <node ID>.QWK backup
prior to packet download and file deletion.

The <node ID>.QWK files are placed in a holding directory which
can be set up as a file area which is only accessible to the Area
Code Hub's end nodes. Then, when the backup packet is needed, the
end node can log onto the BBS and download their backup packet.

John Young, who created the batch files, does an excellent job of
explaining the steps required to set up QWKBACK and the processing
which takes place. Therefore, it isn't necessary to go into a lot of
detail here. However, be assured that QWKBACK does create a backup
QWK packet for each node serviced by the Area Code Hub when set up as
instructed!

SPITFIRE Board Of The Month, Wow! never thought I would see the
day. Well it looks like the day has come. <grin>

First off I would like to Thank Mike Woltz for writing such a
wonderful piece of software. Without SPITFIRE there would probably
be no Sparky Byte's BBS.

It all started way back in March of 1990. I was just starting a
little part time business of my own, and wanted an easy way to keep
track of my customers and some inventory things. I went to Office
Depot and looked around for something that might do what I wanted.
After talking with a worker at Office Depot I determined that I need
a computer. (little did I know at the time what I was getting into).

Anyway, brought the system home, plugged it in, booted it up, and
wondered what I should do next. After quite a while of fishing
through the cryptic DOS manual I decided that I had better see if I
could find some help. After talking with the same guy again at
Office Depot I figured that I NEED A MODEM. Once again I had no idea
what I was getting into. <grin> I bought an internal 2400 baud
screamer, took it home and plugged it in and away I went wandering
into the land of BBS's.

Keep in mind now that this computer was to be my business
computer. That soon went by the wayside. On some BBS systems I
found these wonderful "Door Games" to play. I would work all day and
then come home and call these BBS's all night just so I could play
these computer games against other callers. Got so hooked on it that
I just couldn't live without playing a door game called Global Wars.
After a few months of Grinding my teeth because of busy signals to
the more popular BBS systems I decided that I should just start my
own BBS so that I could play my "Door games" and have others call me
and grind their teeth. Sure made sense to me and my Dentist.

Started talking to some SysOps about their respective software
packages. Finally it came down to two types of software. One was
Wildcat which I call Wildkitty now. <Grin> The other was SPITFIRE.
Had both types of software set up to take calls. I must say that I
thought at the time that SPITFIRE was so much easier for me to run
than that overbearing other type of software. In fact since hard
disk space was limited I started SPITFIRE out on my floppy drives.

Well it came time to start taking some preliminary calls to see
how my efforts would work. Wildcat would not answer calls because it
would not recognize the modem that I was using. So... Out the door
and in with SPITFIRE. The rest is pretty much history. I couldn't
believe how easy it was to run a BBS system. I know it has been said
time and time again but it is true. SPITFIRE is just plain and
simply the easiest, simplest, makes common sense BBS software in the
World! Now I can have my "Door games" and still eat my cake with my
own teeth. <Grin>

Sparky Byte's BBS The Fun One! Has grown quite a bit over the
years. We will be celebrating our 4th big year in October. Wow, it
only seems like yesterday. I have always said, "As long as I have a
computer, and SPITFIRE BBS Software is around, I will always have a
BBS." I mean that in every sense of the phrase.

Today Sparky Byte's runs on a 386 33mhz full tower system. Still
doesn't have a tremendous amount of hard disk space but that problem
has been solved by the addition of two CD Rom drives to hold most of
the files areas. The internal 2400 baud modem has since been
replaced several times with faster modems. Today it has one of those
new fangled V.Everything modems from US Robotics. We participate
actively in two Net mail systems. One being Circuit-Net, and the
newly formed SF-Net, which I might add has literally tripled in size
from when I first got into it back at the end of June.

Buffalo Creek BBS software and it's products are THE BEST! Mike
without you and your help. I would probably still be using my
computer for my business. Thanks a lot! <BIG TOOTHY GRIN>

I just happened to be online on the BCS Support BBS when Mike
Woltz came into chat mode and asked me if I would like to be S.O.M.
for August and as you can tell by now I was delighted.

   Back in 1989 I got my first computer "8086 640k 10 Meg HD". I
didn't even have a modem much less know what it was used for. Then
one day at school one of my friends said they had a bunch of internal
1200 baud modems for sale for 25 dollars and hence the start of my
BBSing.

After calling around to several BBS's for a few months I quickly
realized that the best looking BBS's were always SPITFIRE BBS's. It
wasn't long before the only boards I called were SPITFIRE. I got to
be so well known on the SPITFIRE BBS's that the Sysops were all
encouraging me to start my own BBS, because I liked BBSing so much.
On March 3, 1990 I decided to go on-line with "The Who Knows? BBS".
It did not take long to realize that my current set up was inadequate
so four years later and over 75,000 total callers finds me on a
386/40 8 megs ram, 425 meg HD - 250 meg tape backup and running two
SPITFIRE nodes under Desqview.

When I first became a SPITFIRE Sysop all the local SPITFIRE Sysops
invited me to a local pizza parlor to get acquainted. I realized
that I was involved with a unique and special group of people. It
was like a family atmosphere and I was made to feel welcomed and part
of it. I received so much help and advice a long the way which made
it much easier to get my BBS up and running.

I would like to thank Mike Woltz and the entire SPITFIRE family
for all their support, encouragement and friendship. I have met some
very nice people that have now turned into being good friends thanks
to the SPITFIRE project.
