 SPITFIRE v3.5 Report
;

We at Buffalo Creek Software are once again showing our customers
our appreciation for their dedication to, loyalty to, support of and
promotion of the SPITFIRE project. This appreciation is being shown
by providing a SPITFIRE v3.5 FREE upgrade offer to our eligible
customers. The SPITFIRE v3.5 upgrade notices were mailed about a
week ago so nearly everyone should have received their notice by now.
We believe that the upgrade notice and the 'Upgrade Request & Order
Form' are self-explanatory. Thus, an explanation of the upgrade
procedure is not necessary in this newsletter.

There were a couple of misunderstanding (to say the least),
intentional or otherwise, during the SPITFIRE v3.4 upgrade process.
I will now make a couple of remarks which may serve to avoid the same
confusion. First, those Sysops who order a new manual will be
shipped a complete and new SPITFIRE v3.5 manual (v3.4 was only a
SPITFIRE v3.3 manual supplement). The SPITFIRE v3.5 manual is quite
a bit different than previous SPITFIRE manuals. Second, only Sysops
who download their copy of SPITFIRE v3.5 will be supplied with the
SF35SN.COM program (used to convert the shareware copy of SPITFIRE
v3.5 to a licensed copy). It is not necessary for anyone else to
have SF35SN.COM just like it was not necessary for anyone else to
have SFPUTSN.COM for SPITFIRE v3.4.

SPITFIRE v3.5 is currently in an unfinished state. I will do my
very best to get it finished, tested and released just as soon as
possible. I did plan a July 1st release but I think some of the test
folks waited until the upgrade notices were mailed and then reported
certain problems with the software (there is always a little truth in
jest - smiling).

SFNET - SPITFIRE 'Exclusive' Mail Network Established
;

I am almost afraid to make this report after the 'pounding' I took
for announcing the establishment of SFNET in the June newsletter.
About 12 hours after the June newsletter was released a message was
uploaded to my board which just blasted me for the actions of another
person (actions which I had absolutely nothing to do with). When I
first read the message I thought that it had been uploaded to the
wrong board and that it was intended for someone else. Upon closer
examination I discovered that the message was in fact intended for
me. I immediately phoned the person responsible for the message to
inquire what I did to deserve such an abusive message. I was told
'when I read your article in the newsletter last night I hit the
f##k*ng ceiling'. I have read and re-read my article in the June
newsletter and I honestly cannot find one word that I would change.
The article basically stated that a SPITFIRE 'Exclusive' Mail Network
was being established, why it was being established, its purpose and
how it is going to be operated. The article then asked for
everyone's support of SFNET. I suspect that I will go to my grave
not understanding what was said in the article which would cause such
a negative reaction. Anyway, this is exactly the type of attitude
which we are trying to get away from.

On a positive note, SFNET has progressed much faster and smoother
than I ever expected. The software being used in the SFNET project
is a Buffalo Creek Software program named SHILOH. It is working
amazing smooth (much to my surprise). There are a number of little
fixes and additions which need to be made to the software. These
little fixes and additions will be made once SPITFIRE v3.5 is out the
door.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has
gotten involved in SFNET and who is working within SFNET with a
healthy, positive attitude. I honestly feel strongly that SFNET is
going to become very beneficial to the SPITFIRE project.

I am looking forward to working with you in SFNET.

 SPITFIRE Surveys Returned
;

The SPITFIRE Surveys (on the reverse side of the SPITFIRE v3.5
Upgrade Request & Order Form) are being returned and we surely thank
you for the time it takes to complete the survey. I believe that
this survey information will be most helpful in determining future
improvements and additions to SPITFIRE.

Until next time, may God bless you...

SFNET - SPITFIRE 'EXCLUSIVE' MAIL SYSTEM
;

It was announced in the June 1994 that a new mail system was
being planned. The decision to create this new mail system was the
result of numerous requests submitted by SPITFIRE Sysops who wished
to have a SPITFIRE 'Exclusive' mail system in which they could
participate. At that time, despite the predicted success of the
project, it was impossible to foresee the overwhelming response which
SFNET has since received.

Although, SFNET is still considered to be under development, in
a matter of just a few short weeks, SFNET has truly become an active
mail network. Mail is being transferred nightly between 76 active,
national and international nodes. That is simply remarkable! But
that is only part of the success of SFNET. In addition, there are
another 34 nodes which have either expressed interest or are
currently in the process of setting up the software to make their
initial mail run.

During the first week of activity, SFNET began with a limited
amount of conferences, ten to be exact. Considering we were
embarking on a totally new project, it seemed appropriate that some
caution should be exercised in limiting the number of available
conferences and participating nodes. By the end of the first week it
was evident that SFNET was ready to, shall we say. open for business!
Another 15 conferences were added and SFNET became available to any
SPITFIRE Sysop wishing to participate.

More conferences are expected to be added in the very new
future. And, as might be expected, the conference list will be
expanded significantly in the weeks that follow.

The growth of SFNET has truly been phenomenal! Special credit
should be extended to Mike Auchenbach, Jereomy Frum, Jacque Shipley,
Chuck Eisenmenger, and Kevin Mefford for their assistance in
promoting SFNET within their area codes! Also, special thanks are
extended to the Canadian hubs of Chuck Eisenmenger, Anthony Trollope
and Eric Lofgren, as well as the Australian hub, Franz Scheurer, who
quickly joined SFNET, giving it international status!

 SHILOH MAIL SYSTEM SOFTWARE
;

Although, SFNET has enjoyed a tremendous success, it would not
be possible without the SHILOH software. SHILOH is a Buffalo Creek
Software product which allows messages to be exchanged between two or
more BBS systems, using QWK mail packets.

SHILOH consists of two modules. SHILOIMP is the import module
which is used to import QWK mail packets from another BBS into your
SPITFIRE message base. SHILOEXP is the export module and exports
mail from your SPITFIRE BBS in a QWK mail packet format so that it
can be imported into another BBS system.

Many of the nodes which are participating in SFNET marvel at the
speed at which the SHILOH import and export modules process the mail.
For Sysops concerned with disk space, you might also be pleasantly
surprised at the size of the SHILOH import and export modules. The
larger of the two, SHILOEXP.COM consumes a whole 11,527 bytes of hard
disk space! As might be expected, the speed and the size can be
attributed to the modules having been written in Assembler language.

It should be noted that although SFNET uses the SHILOH QWK Mail
System for transferring its mail packets, SHILOH could be used with
any mail network where mail is exchanged through QWK mail packets.
In fact, as long as the mail network is capable of exchanging QWK
mail packets, SHILOH could even be used to exchange messages between
a SPITFIRE BBS and BBS systems using software other than SPITFIRE.
Also, worth mentioning is the fact that SHILOH is fully capable of
preparing packets in advance for Sysops who prefer this method of
mail transfer.

͸
SFDUPCHK - SPITFIRE DUPLICATE MESSAGE CHECKER
;

SFDUPCHK is a Buffalo Creek Software utility, written by Mike
Woltz, which checks for duplicate messages within the SPITFIRE
message base. SPITFIRE v3.5, Lakota v1.3, BCSUTI v1.3 and SHILOH
v1.0 are BCS utilities which store a 32 bit CRC value in SPITFIRE's
Message Conference *.PTR. The 32 bit CRC value is stored in the
appropriate *.PTR file for each and every message which is contained
in the SPITFIRE message base.

SFDUPCHK compares the CRC value stored for each message to
determine whether there is a match. If a matching CRC value is
found, SFDUPCHK next compares the To, From and Date field of the
message header. If the CRC values match and the To, From and Date
field information match, SFDUPCHK considers the message to be a
duplicate. In such an instance where a duplicate message is
encountered, SFDUPCHK then marks the later of the two messages for
deletion. The next time the message base is packed the duplicate
message will be removed from the SPITFIRE message base.

͸
 SFNETADD - SFNET CONFERENCE ADDITIONS
;

SFNETADD was written by Mike Woltz to assist Sysops
participating in SFNET. SFNETADD reads a text file generated by Mike
Woltz which contains a list of the SFNET Message Conference Names and
Net ID Names. This list is used by SFNETADD to prompt the Sysop as
to whether the Message Conference should be added to the SPITFIRE
message base. The Message Conference is automatically added to the
SPITFIRE message base, provided the Sysop responds appropriately to
the SFNETADD prompts. SFNETADD uses established defaults when adding
a Message Conference Record which are explained in the SFNETADD
documentation.

 SPITFIRE BOARD-OF-THE-MONTH
;

                       The DOWNTOWN BBS
                     SysOp, Kevin Mefford
                         812-273-4414
                         812-273-4422
                         Madison, IN

Back in 1990, my only experience with computers was at work, where
I had basically mastered Professional Write. I knew nothing about
DOS, nothing about modems, but I could turn on the computer and write
memos. With this experience under my belt, I decided to buy a
computer of my own so I could write memos at home. I went to the
nearest Circuit City, tax refund in hand, and bought a Packard Bell
386 SX/16 with a 40mb Hard Drive and 1mb of RAM. What a bargain! I
brought it home, turned it on, and attempted to load Professional
Write. After reformatting the Hard Drive (twice!) I called a friend
for some help. Finally I was on my way.

Naturally, as I slowly figured out what I was doing, I decided
that there had to be more to owning a computer than word processing,
so I bought a 2400 baud modem and very carefully took my case off and
installed it. I was hooked! But after my first $300.00 phone bill I
had to curtail my online activities, and it was then I thought how
nice it would be to have a local BBS.

By January of 1993 a couple of local boards had come and gone
and I started seriously considering starting one myself. I called
around and downloaded every piece of BBS software that I could find
and started experimenting. Some of the docs seemed to be written in
Martian, some of the pricing structures read like the Wall Street
Journal, and then I unzipped SPITFIRE. Needless to say, in about
half an hour I had a fully functioning BBS on my desk.

Knowing that I would need to upgrade considerably before going
online, I purchased a 14.4 modem, a 240 mb HD, 3 more mb of RAM, and
an external Magnavox CD-ROM. On April 20th, 1993, the DOWNTOWN BBS
went online.

The following months were a frenzy of learning. I discovered
TheDraw, CircuitNet, FrontDoor and so much more. The board started
to look more professional and the callers actually started sending me
money (yea!). Soon, though, I started to miss having a computer that
I could use for my own purposes, so I bought a new computer just for
me. Right! Two months after buying the new one, I tore the guts out
of the old 386 and moved everything to the new tower. Oh well, I
can't play DOOM anymore but I can still use Professional Write
<grin>.

The DOWNTOWN BBS is now a multi-node system running under
DesqView with two 14.4 modems, 580 mb of HD space, 16 mb of RAM, and
2 CD-ROM drives rotating 18 CDs, including one for Amiga/Mac users.
DOWNTOWN is the 812 Host board for CircuitNet, SFNet, and a Barren
Realms League. I also participate in the SysOptics Network and have
a file area dedicated to .GIFs of missing children from the Heidi
Search Center.

DOWNTOWN has grown considerably over the last year and I hope
will continue to expand and evolve right along with SPITFIRE.

Of course all of this growth would have been impossible without
assistance, so I would like to take this opportunity to express my
gratitude to some folks who have given so freely of their time and
patience: Mike Woltz, for creating such a wonderful piece of
software; Dave (Robert) Bowles, without whom I would have NEVER
figured out those little ANSI codes; Emmett Perdue and Steve Newman
for their near constant assistance with Front Door and CircuitNet;
Chris Cook and Justin King for all of the help with DesqView; Richard
Transue, for saving me the trouble of starting from scratch with one
little tweak to QEMM; and, most especially, Jody Plowdrey, my fiance
for the past two years (soon Honey, I promise!). Without Jody's
support and understanding I would never have even started the BBS.

There are others, of course, but these are the phone numbers I
see most on my voice bill <grin>. SPITFIRE and CircuitNet/SFNet have
introduced me to so many new friends over the last year that I can't
begin to list them all.

Thanks, Mike, for making it all possible!

 SYSOP-OF-THE-MONTH
;
                                Brian Tremblay
                               Pirates Cove BBS
                                (508)347-5516
                                (508)347-5026

Hello Everyone!

Well I never expected to be writing a letter of this nature! It
is an Honor and a pleasure to be selected Sysop Of the Month! One
that I am not convinced I deserve.

I first started running a SPITFIRE BBS shortly after I learned
how to get on my computer back in April of 93. The whole reason for
starting a BBS was as a means for a small group of friends and myself
to pass data between us. Well before I knew it the callers had taken
over! And I found myself buying yet another system to do what the
first was intended for and guess what? The callers now have a second
node and I am looking at new systems again<G>.

From what I understand, a Sysop is given the honor of being
Sysop of the Month because of their active part in promoting or
contribution to the SPITFIRE cause. Although I feel my contribution
was small in comparison to many of you who have contributed, Mike
seems to think otherwise.

My contribution was more a pleasure than anything else. It is
closely related to the type of work I do, which I truly enjoy more
than anything, well with the exception of a few things! <G> Like
being a SPITFIRE Sysop and most of all having a wife who stands by me
when I am spending way too much time on the computer or at work! She
is the one who deserves recognition! Well now back business at hand.
As I said I was given this honor for assisting two of the greatest
people and Sysops (Mike Woltz and Jacque Shipley) in redesigning the
SPITFIRE manual for the release of SPITFIRE V3.5

Its funny that I am writing this letter when so many of you out
there have had a part in helping me out along the way to a successful
board. I would give recognition to all but I would have to write a
text file as long as the SPITFIRE manual <G> besides you know who you
are! I do however feel that Mike deserves recognition, he has been
both co-operative, and more importantly, patient with me and my lack
of knowledge (nice way of saying stupidity!) He has assisted me with
not only the problems which I have encountered, but also those which
I created along the way, pointing out to me just how great a BBS
software package SPITFIRE is!

Now the second person to whom I am indebted to is Jacque
Shipley. She has been a tremendous amount of help and has given the
best support any one person could! She has set me straight many
times and was terrific to chat with. She has been patient and a
great help in setting up various functions on my BBS. In fact she
has helped me out so many times that I couldn't begin to thank her
enough, besides I am really saving all the thank you's for the one
big THANK YOU when she helps me set up FrontDoor<BG>!!

While I was working on resetting the SPITFIRE manual I was
amazed by many things, but mainly at my own stupidity!!! and never
having taken the time to read the manual more carefully than I had. I
really should have to, because as I said, I am new to this computer
stuff and have only really been playing with one for a little over a
year. If I had payed closer attention to the manual, I would have
answered a lot more of my own questions rather than having to bug all
of you for the answers! Another thing I had realized was that Mike
had done what no other software author had done or even attempted to
do, and that was to create a BBS Software package that could do
everything you needed it to do and do it at an affordable price! Now
he has gone and improved the whole package by adding and improving
features in the software.

In talking with Mike over the past 3 weeks, we were trying to
come up with a new design and slogan for the cover of the manual.
Mike had made mention that one of his sayings were "Quality Software
at Old Fashioned Prices"!! I think we can all agree that he indeed
lives by these words!

As I said this manual can be a wealth of information, for new
Sysops or for that matter, anyone who has been operating a SPITFIRE
BBS for any length of time. I would recommend to those of you that
do upgrade to version 3.5 to get the manual along with the upgrade
and look through it carefully to see if you are missing anything!

Well I didn't think I was going to get past the first sentence
in this letter but it is easy when you are talking about a great
product and an exceptional group of people!

Once again I would like to say thanks to the many of SPITFIRE
Sysops who have helped me out in the past, you are all a terrific
bunch of people! A special thanks to Jacque who has been the
greatest! We will be chatting soon so get out all them FD notes you
got scattered about because the manual is finished and here I
come!<BG>.

Most of all I would like to thank Mike Woltz for giving me the
opportunity to participate in recreating the SPITFIRE manual which
also gave me the opportunity to be SPITFIRE Sysop-Of-The-Month and
more importantly, for creating what I believe to be the best BBS
software on the market!!!!
