     Overview of NetWare for LAT

NetWare for LAT is Novell's networking product for
bidirectional connection of users and resources in the
Digital Equipment Corporation (Digital*) Local Area
Transport (LAT) environment and the NetWare environment. The
product works with NetWare 3.11, 3.12, 4.01, or later.

Terminal emulation applications running on desktop
workstations connect to the NetWare for LAT server over any
local area network (LAN) supported by NetWare-Token Ring,
Ethernet, or ARCnet*- by means of IPX/SPX, TCP/IP, or
AppleTalk* protocols. NetWare for LAT NetWare Loadable
Module (NLM) applications connect to the DEC* host over an
Ethernet connection by means of the LAT protocol.

NetWare for LAT also supports other NLM applications that
work with NetWare for LAT to integrate the NetWare and
     Digital environments.

These third-party NLMs include products that provide
bidirectional print integration, E-mail integration, and
file transfer. NetWare for LAT provides you with the
     following capabilities:

Bidirectional Connectivity. Users of either NetWare or
LAT have access to the resources on the other side of
the NetWare for LAT server. These resources are made
available through third-party software described in
          this booklet.

          Multiprotocol Support. Connecting through NetWare
provides access to LAT resources over such other
protocols as IPX/SPX, AppleTalk, and TCP/IP. Examples
using AppleTalk and TCP/IP are shown in the README.TXT
          file on the distribution diskette.

NetWare Integration. You can use NetWare security,
          administration, and status-monitoring tools within
          NetWare for LAT.

NetWare for LAT Server Hardware Recommendations

The hardware necessary to run a NetWare for LAT server
depends on the number of users that it must support and the
other NLMs that are running on the server. All versions
require approximately 10 MB of hard disk space. Table 1
lists the minimum CPU capacity recommended and amount of RAM
required on your computer for each port configuration
version of NetWare for LAT. The required minimum memory is
based on the number of users.

Table 1 Server Hardware Recommendations and Memory
     Requirements

Users CPU (Recommended) RAM (Required Minimum)

     16 386DX-33 MHz 8 MB
     32 486DX-25 MHz 12 MB
     64 486DX-33 MHz 16 MB
     128 486DX2-66 MHz 20 MB

Note: The data in this table assumes four sessions per user.
Less memory may be required if fewer than four sessions per
     user are run.

You can use any manufacturer's product that has Novell
certification. Call Novell Labs at 1-800-NETWARE or
1-801-429-5544 to determine if the platform you are
     interested in has Novell certification.

Third-Party Emulator Software Supporting NetWare for LAT

The emulator software handles the interface logic between
the workstation running the emulator and the server running
NetWare for LAT. As a result, NetWare for LAT is
transparent to NetWare users, enabling them to operate as if
they were working at a Digital terminal directly connected
     to the LAT network.

Table 2 lists companies announcing terminal emulation
software that will be compatible with NetWare for LAT.
Contact the manufacturer listed in the table for information
on and availability of a particular product.

     WAN Client Parameters

If you experience problems in a low-speed WAN environment,
you may want to set the client parameters in the NET.CFG
file on the workstation. For more information on this file,
see the NetWare system administration guide for the version
of NetWare that you have installed.

Novell recommends that you set the protocol stack SPX
parameters in the NET.CFG file as follows:
     For OS/2*
     For DOS and MS Windows

     protocol stack spx
          abort timeout 60000
          listen timeout 12000
          retry count 40
          verify timeout 6000
     protocol stack spx
          abort timeout 1080
          listen timeout 216
          retry count 40
          verify timeout 108

     WAN Server Parameters

Similarly, you can modify the server parameters for
operation in a WAN environment by using the SPXCONFG
utility. You can invoke SPXCONFG as a console command, or by
inserting it into an .NCF file. The following line
     illustrates the user of SPXCONFG:

          LOAD [path] SPXCONFG [option[=value]] [option[=value]]

Novell recommends that you set the SPXCONFG parameters to
     the following values:

          LOAD [path] SPXCONFG A=1080 V=108 W=216 R=20

The letters have the following meanings:

A = SPX Watchdog Abort timeout (in ticks)

V = SPX Watchdog Verify timeout (in ticks)

W = SPX Ack Wait timeout (in ticks)

R = SPX Default Retry Count

     Operating System Parameters

If you are running NetWare for LAT on a NetWare 3.11 server
or if you are running 64 or more users on a NetWare 3.12
server, you must set the maximum allocation of short term
memory. You do not need to set this parameter for NetWare
4.x or if you are running fewer than 64 users on NetWare
     3.12.

Set the short-term memory as follows:

SET MAXIMUM ALLOC SHORT TERM MEMORY=number

Replace number with the number of bytes of memory
appropriate for your number of users:

     Number of Users number

     16 4000000
     32 8000000
     64 12000000
     128 16000000

When running NetWare for LAT on a NetWare 4.01 server, you
need to upgrade the priority of threads for proper operation
when a server is especially busy. In NetWare 3.x, the
threads are already high priority and need not be changed.

To upgrade the threads, enter the following command line at
the NetWare for LAT server console or place this line in the
     AUTOEXEC.NCF file:

          SET UPGRADE LOW PRIORITY THREADS=ON

Running NetWare for LAT and NetWare for SAA* on One Server

You must have NetWare for SAA 1.3B to run NetWare for SAA
and NetWare for LAT on the same server.

If you have a DEC host system and an IBM* mainframe or
AS/400*, you may want to install NetWare for LAT and NetWare
for SAA on the same server. Use the procedure outlined here
     to install NetWare for LAT.

If NetWare for SAA Is Already Installed

If NetWare for SAA 1.3B or later is already installed
on the server and you want to install NetWare for LAT,
follow these steps. You may have to refer to the
administration guide for your version of NetWare for
SAA for details on these steps.

          1. Unload NetWare for SAA and the Communication
               Executive.

          2. Install the Communication Executive that is
included with the NetWare for LAT product.

          3. Install NetWare for LAT and any other files that
               may be necessary.

You can now run NetWare for SAA and NetWare for LAT
          from this server.

If NetWare for LAT Is Already Installed

If you have already installed NetWare for LAT and want
to install NetWare for SAA, do not install the
Communication Executive that comes with NetWare for
SAA; use the Communication Executive version that is
          shipped with NetWare for LAT.

     Audit Trail Display

With both NetWare for LAT and NetWare for SAA installed, the
audit trail information is displayed with common column
headings. The NetWare for SAA column headings now read as
     follows:

          LU is shown as P/S.
          Appl_ID is shown as Service.

Setting Up AppleTalk or TCP/IP on a NetWare for LAT Server

If you are using third-party terminal emulation software
that supports the AppleTalk protocol or TCP/IP, follow the
instructions contained in the README.TXT file on the
distribution diskette to enable these protocols.

     Using Multiple Network Adapter Cards

NetWare allows you bind more than one protocol to a single
network adapter card (NIC). If you have already loaded a
driver for the Ethernet_II frame type, you need not load
that driver again. You cannot load the same frame type for
more than one protocol on a single card.

For optimal performance, or if you are using the same frame
type for more than one protocol, use one network adapter
card to connect to the LAT network and a second to connect
to the NetWare network. You can then give each card a unique
     name for binding purposes.
