             GUIDELINES FOR MODEM PREPARATION

NOTE: Examples are given for QLII software, but the general
approach applies to other software. The macros given assume you
have QLII which already has macros installed. If you have an
earlier version, see MACRO NOTES below.

YOUR MODEM HAS THE ABILITY TO ADJUST ITS IMPEDANCE TO MATCH YOUR
LOCAL PHONE LINE.

From the QLII 'terminal' mode. Type AT\E1 and press the
[enter] key. This tells your modem to adjust to your phone line
when you make your next V.32bis call. Make the V.32bis call
immediately after entering AT\E1. You may not connect on the
first try, as the modem will be making this adjustment. However
your modem will now be adjusted to the phone line, and this step
will not have to be repeated unless you change phone lines.

USING MACROS TO FORCE 2400 OR 9600 CONNECTIONS.

When calling a 2400 BPS modem, the <F1> key will tell the
modem to connect at 2400 with no speed negotiation. Press <F1>
and then use the QLII dialing directory to make the call.
If you need to force a 9600 connection use the <F2> key
before making the call using your dialing directory.
If you want to return the modem to the default, in which the
modem will negotiate speed, use the <F3> key.

IF THE OTHER MODEM DOES NOT HAVE ERROR CORRECTION CAPABILITY YOU
MAY WANT TO DISABLE ERROR CORRECTION IN YOUR MODEM

The <F6> key will turn off protocol negotiaton (MNP or
V.42bis). Press <F6> then use the QLII dialing directory
normally.
In combination with <F6> you may use <F1> or <F2> to force
connections at a set speed.
To restore the default negotiation of protocol, use the <F5>
key.

MACRO NOTES: Macros may be assigned (if needed) or changed as
follows.
Press <alt>-S to get to the setup menu. Press 'K' or use arrow
keys to highlight Macro Keys choice and press [enter].
<F1> macro is ATS37=9N0\r (\r is carriage return for macro)
   <F2> macro is ATS37=6N0\r
   <F3> macro is ATN1\r
   <F5> macro is AT&Q5\r
   <F6> macro is AT&Q6\r

Be sure to use the 'S' to save, as QLII does not save the macros
automatically. (the N0 is ZERO not letter 'O').
