In spite of claims on some software, and the apparent fax

commands, the present state of faxmodem/software will not

differentiate between fax/data/voice. However.....

                   Distictive ring / Ringmate

Many areas of the country have this feature, which makes your

phone ring differently (RING or RING-RING) if a person calls

you using a different phone number. Your original number will

RING, the new number will RING-RING (like the old party line). If

you tell people the 2nd number is your FAX number, and set your

fax 'rings' to 6 or 8 then you can answer the 1-ring number when

it rings, and let the fax answer when you hear the 2-ring call.

It works like this. (if you have 8 rings set in software)

RING (1) RING-RING (2)
RING (2) RING-RING (4)
RING (3) RING-RING (6)
RING (4) RING-RING (8)
RING (5) ^
RING (6) |
RING (7) |
RING (8) <-------------------faxmodem answers on 8th RING

When you hear the 1-ring you will have 7 rings before the

fax will answer, giving you plenty of time to get the phone

before the fax. And on 2-ring, you just don't answer at all

letting the faxmodem answer.
