BreakOut-II 4.0 README.TXT file
===============================

This file contains last minute information concerning the operation of
BreakOut-II that did not make the final documentation.

===
BMC
===

The BreakOut-II Monitor Cable (BMC) is now marked as having
two connections to your system: COMP and COMS. If you have an
older cable that was marked as COM1 and COM2, the BMC will
work exactly the same. In the User's Manual, any reference to
the BMC's COMP cable refers to COM1 (and COMS to COM2).

===============
TEMPORARY FILES
===============

BreakOut-II creates a bunch of temporary files with .$$$ and
.TMP filename extensions. When BreakOut-II exits, it deletes
ALL files with that extension in the working subdirectory.
Do not create files using those filename extensions.

=============
VIDEO DISPLAY
=============
The fastest performer is standard VGA with Single communications
viewer selected. If you execute a 50 or 43 line video mode,
depending on your display adapter, you may have to execute the
following command after exiting BreakOut-II:
    MODE CO80

===
BCL
===

BCL DO command
--------------
The BCL statement COUNTER (not the register COUNTER) has been
appropriately renamed to DO. This will have significance only
to those customers that have written PCL source modules from
BreakOut-II version 3.x. Change your .PCL source to reflect
DO and recompile. See Chapter 6 in the User's Manual for more
details.

BCL Registers
-------------
We have added registers R6, R7, R8, R9, and R10 to BCL. For
users upgrading from BreakOut-II version 3.x, this will help you
write more robust BCL modules. See Chapter 6 in the User's Manual
for more details.

===========
BONUS FILES
===========

At the last minute, we "snuck in" the following:

File            Description
------------    -------------------------------------------------
ASCICODE.DCS ASCII text and ASCII mnemonic codes
BAUDOT.BEA      Baudot 5-bit code analysis
COUNT_PE.BEA Counts the number of parity errors
COUNT_OE.BEA Counts the number of overrun errors
COUNT_FE.BEA Counts the number of frame errors
COUNT_ER.BEA Counts the number of data errors
GRAPHICP.BEA Format like GRAPHICS.BEA but can be printed

==================
PORT COMPATIBILITY
==================

Advanced Firmware Development cannot be responsible for the
compatibility of your system's communications ports. We fully
tested BreakOut-II on the following computers and specific
communication adapter cards:

ZEOS    Pentium 90Mhz
ZEOS    486 66Mhz
GATEWAY 486 66Mhz
GATEWAY 486 25Mhz
GATEWAY 386 25Mhz
DELL    286 6Mhz

B&B Electronics dual-port (16550AFN) RS232, RS422, RS485 COMBO card
SIIG Professional I/O dual-port 16550AFN and bi-directional printer port
STB DSP-550 16550AFN (dual-port card) and bi-directional printer port
DFI (Diamond Flower) MS-400 4-port 16450 even works with 8514/A super VGA
DFI M-500 dual-port 16450 and printer port
KW (Kouwei) KW-524 dual-port 16450 and printer port

Just a note of caution, Microsoft's MSD diagnostic sometimes incorrectly
identifies communication controller chips (UARTs).

Whenever possible, use 16550AFN UARTs. In order to keep up with timestamp
while capturing, it is recommended that you use a 486 66MHZ processor and
16550AFN UARTs. DO NOT ENABLE TIMESTAMPS UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED TO!
