Gray house cat standing at the sliding glass door
   looks out, then at me.
      Repeating until I catch the hint.
 
I let her out.  A moment later
   her nose and paws press the glass.
      In and out, out and in
 
until I scowl and leave the door ajar.
   She sits inside, nose at the door jam,
      smiling.  I am slow.
 
What she wanted was neither in nor out,
   but the freedom to choose.
