               ATTEMPT AT UNDERSTANDING (C) 1987

The most wonderful feeling in the world is to be in the
arms of someone who loves you for just being you. At
this time I become one with the person and the universe.
I am whole and complete, and my very soul is at peace.
Each day I reserve a special time just for us. Usually
we sit or lie together on a couch or bed because that's
the only way to get close when you spend almost your
entire life in a wheelchair that physically separates
you from everyone around you. Like others, I also need
to be touched, held, hugged, and cuddled to feel real.
There are only a few people who dare get close enough
to do this. And when they do, it's great!

The unfortunate thing about this is that all too often
ignorant people jump to grossly false conclusions when
they find us together. They automatically assume we
are doing something morally or sinfully wrong, when in
fact, they, the accusers, are in the wrong for denying
us our human right to openly show affection for another
in a perfectly healthy, pure manner. Since when has it
become a terrible sin to hold people, to wipe away their
tears, and to give them comfort when they need it most?!

This has been a personal expression of the frustration
I've experienced all of my "adult" life.
