CONNECT! Magazine EDITORIAL
ij

CyberSpace has never been short of jerks and "CyberPunks" who's main
goal in life is to cause trouble for those on-line. "Little Boy Boards," --
those BBS systems operated by punks and hoodlums who's parents or legal
guardians don't have a clue what they're up to (or don't care) -- have given
the BBS industry a black eye.
These socially-retarded and often mentally ill little snots (no doubt
spoiled rotten by a worthless mommy and daddy) have been the cause of
computer viruses, long distance telephone scandals, credit card fraud and
many more serious crimes that should result in a good 'ole hanging if our
lawmakers weren't such liberal wimps.
Abolish the parole system. Enforce the criminal penal codes. That's the
way to deal with CyberPunks or any other criminal.
It is with this in mind that a breath of fresh air is blowing over the
Houston on-line world.
A group of responsible BBS SysOps are helping to erase the negative image
of the BBS industry that the little schmoes have made for us, transforming
the BBS image from that of a house of viruses to that of a good neighbor.
With all the wealth in Houston, thousands of Houstonians go to bed each
night (that is if they have a bed) hungry. In a land of plenty, it is a
vile thought of someone in need of a meal.
In this issue of CONNECT! MAGAZINE, read how you too can join the effort
started by a group of self-less BBS System Operators and their users to
stamp out hunger in Houston. Its a story that will make you proud to be
on-line in Houston, and one that can make a happy ending for all.

                            By Bruce Bozarth

I hope we can get the entire BBS community behind this effort to
collect non-perishable foods for the Houston Food Bank. A dozen
local area computer retailers have graciously agreed to be
collection points for your donations made to this generous agency.
Houston Food Bank has recently sent $100,000 worth of food into the
flood disaster areas north of Houston. Their efforts--needed NOW--
mean that Food Bank reserves have diminished dramatically. Agencies
which work with the Food Bank, such as Meals On Wheels, may not be
as well supported in coming months without OUR help NOW.
PLEASE "Log On and Drop Off" any non-perishable foods such as canned
meats, vegetables, dried beans, rice, flour, etc. at any convenient
location shown on our log on screen. Help us be successful in needed
community work NOW and those with future need will thank us.
Your sysop is NOT expected--or prepared--to collect or store any
donations. All donations should be delivered to the listed drop
off locations.
Only good can come from this effort--it is a win/win situation for
those in need and the BBS community in general. Let's show the
non-modeming public just how big our hearts can be!

    THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING!

Houston has a bulletin-board rich environment for Cyber-folks <197> unlike
anywhere else.
BBSs come and go, but when they go we have plenty to take their
places and hundreds ready to receive calls at any given time.
Sometimes it overwhelms me the variety of topics you can cover on a
daily basis.
You want religion? Just hitting the BBS list with my word processor
search function, I found BBSs offering specific interests including
Catholic, Pentecostal. Some offered more general descriptions like
'Christian' and 'Religious'. While not specifically mentioned in the
BBS list, some offer additional religious areas such as Judaism and
Islam.
Still other boards mention they explore areas like paganism.
And that's just religious subjects. There's also the topics of
science, game-playing, technology, law, medicine, politics and many
others, including of course the boards catering to interests of adults
(using assumed names to talking filthy to each other).
  So I shouldn't have been surprised. I sought a specific topic --
encroachment of our natural rights (pre-dating the U.S. Constitution,
Bill of Rights, or Articles of Confederation) by our own government,
its various police forces and the United Nations.
People discussing this stuff subscribe to one or more of the various
patriot groups, including gun ownership rights groups, conservative
mainstream groups and religious groups. I decided to take a shot at
finding the Paul Revere Nets in this area. The name just sounded
right.
I found three nets in the Paul Revere system -- including PR_Net,
featuring conversations and debate; PRN_News, with announcements from
different groups and news articles on government attacks on individual
liberty; and PR_Tech, mostly nuts-and-bolts discussions about guns.
I found the nets on two boards in October's list -- Alcatraz RBBS-PC
at 450-3870 and Brigadoon at 409-321-4637 (Conroe Metro Number
available as local call from part of Houston by dialing with Area
Code, but without the 1).
  Great stuff in these nets!
While PR_Tech offers the same kind of gun talk you can find in Usenet
and Fidonet groups, the PR_News and PR_Net areas offer a thoughtful
and responsible perspectives from a variety of groups who distrust the
old belief that mankind's government represents a servant, with
mankind the master. Discussions of events such as the Branch Davidian
standoff and other shootouts with federal agents highlight the fact
that government has gotten too big to take orders from its citizens
anymore.
One exciting, emotional string discussed a Paul Revere User's grief
over the killing by a federal sharpshooter, named Horiuchi, of an
unarmed woman, Vicky Weaver, who held her baby in her arms. The fatal
shooting happened during a federal standoff in Idaho with the Weaver
family. Here's a portion of one message:

 Subject: Weaver II

VW> BTW, in preparation for the raid on the Branch Davidian compound, the
VW> BATF named their training camp CAMP VICKY (according to the Justice
VW> dept's report on the Waco massacre) in honor of agent Horiuchi.

There was a rumor during the Weaver incident that agents called their
Idaho base camp "Camp Vicki." This was never confirmed, and was denied by
every government rep who was asked about it. I have not seen the text
of the Justice Department's Waco Whitewash. But if it contains information
about Camp Vicki, I would very much appreciate having the exact quote
and page number.

VW> I don't know about you, but this pisses me off beyond words. I hope
VW> that Horiuchi ends up in the crosshairs of a patriot's scope one day
VW> and gets what's coming to him. If he ever gets in my crosshairs I'm
VW> going to send him one and name *MY* .308 168-grain Sierra HPBT match
VW> bullet Vicky in HER honor.

I, too, would like to see Horiuchi brought to justice. I don't believe
I could ever do it myself, because--unlike Horiuchi--I don't think I
could kill in cold blood. And I still have hope that "the system" will
punish him--though that hope was always slight and is fading fast.

The fact that Horiuchi is NOT dead now says a lot about the restraint
and basic non-violence of gun owners. Despite your words, I don't
believe you would kill him, either. His address has been published in
a number of places, including here on PRN. Yet he lives in peace.

And that's what's so horrible. He probably really does live in "peace"--
the blank, conscienceless state of a sociopathic killer--something
we could never really be.

VW> But this incident started over trivial, trumped-up, bullshit charges.
VW> Not significantly unlike what has happened to David this year. He has
VW> a justified concern for his and his family's well-being.

I agree with this. And so does the government. In 1982, Congress investigated
the BATF and concluded that the agency spent almost all its time harassing
law-abiding people instead of going after real criminals. They recommended
abolishing the agency, but no other federal agency would take in the ATF's
badly trained, "cowboy" agents.

One of the most amusing strings of conversation poses a debate
between Libertarians and conservative Republicans on freedom of gun
ownership. The Libertarian party members say voting for their
candidates represents the best way to fight gun control -- emphasizing
that while Democrats continue expanding government and its abuses,
Republicans spend at least part of their time helping the Democrats by
compromising with them.
The Republicans say voting for Libertarians just dilutes the
conservative votes and makes the Democrat votes count more.
First, we hear from the Libertarian side:

What a cheap out. I'd expect that "bipartisanship" excuse
from a liberal. What do you mean by "every stripe?" There are only
two colors in Congress- Republican and Democrat. The Republicans
lied to us to get elected, and then voted against us and with the
Democrats.

SN> Vote them out of office, and vote in pro-gun candidates who can *win*!

Who should I vote for here in Illinois- anti-gun Republican
governor Jim Edgar, or anti-gun Democrat challenger Dawn Clark
Netsch?

Should I vote for anti-gun Republican Jim Ryan, candidate for
Attorney General, who is running awful radio spots of a female
country singer saying-

"So if you're tired of gangs, and guns, and tears, and
children cryin',

The only one to vote for is Jim Ryan"

or should I vote for anti-gun millionaire Democrat lawyer Al
Hofeld, the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence's pet
candidate for the office?

     Huh?

  And the Republican rebuttal:

You conveniently ignore the fact that this is an excellent opportunity
to reward DiFi (Diane Feinstein) for her backstabbing ways, and put
GunOwners back on the lobby "map".

This type of political action is what is best understood. We win, they
lose. There is no one who will deny that a loss for DiFi will send an
important message to all who know and care.

You, again, seem to be making my case in putting the LP ahead of
GunOwners by preferring a total loss over a win. If DiFi loses,
GunOwners win by gaining a majority in politics by those who are
closer to our thinking. To GunOwners, a win by Huffington would be a
win. It appears to me that the only thing that will satisfy the LP is to
continue to lose?

You seem to want to insist (and do you really expect?) there to be some
instantaneous change in politics. Like a magic wand, or something. It
takes more than wishful thinking to get things done.
 ======================================================================

The PRN_News area had announcements from a variety of groups,
including this one posted October 3 from the Parent Information
Network (P.I.N.):

 ======================================================================
URGENT MESSAGE TO BE GIVEN TO P.I.N. AREA CONTACT PERSONS
                        ("TOWN CRIERS")

This is an "EMERGENCY BULLETIN" from P.I.N. to all of the special
network. May I ask you to get a pencil and big piece of paper so
that I can pass it on to you verbatim? Here is the bulletin:

There two deadly items going before the U.S - Senate this
week, and both must be defeated. They are:

    (1) the U.N. Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of
Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), which is ultra-dangerous
to the Christian family and Christian church. Article 5
specifically calls upon the nations passing the treaty to
"monitor the content of `family education"'.

    (2) The "tine print" in the new LOBBY REFORM ACT (S 349) would
almost certainly force organizations like P.I.N., Focus on the
Family, the Family Research Council and others to register as
lobbyists simply to be able to "spread the word" about all of
the current dangers. It is "sneaky" - just like H.R. 6 last
    spring!

Here is what P.I.N. asks you to do:

Call the Senate switchboard in Washington at (202) 224-3121
and the local offices of your Senators. (If you are a Wisconsin
    resident, Herb Kohl (414) 297-4451 & Russ Feingold (414) 276-7282.)
Give them a very simple message lIke this:

"We are `sick and tired' of radical U.N. treaties to
"RESTRUCTURE" THE TRADITIONAL AMERICAN FAMILY (like the new
U.N. Treaty on Discrimination Against women and the
children's rights treaty") and then trying to stifle
opposition by means of the "fine print" in the new LOBBY
REFORM ACT (5 349), which just went through the House last
Thursday! This is a "slam dunk" just like H.R. 6. and we are
not fooled by it one bit!"

Because these measures came up "out of nowhere" so quickly, we
cannot give you all of the details today, but if your phone calls
to the senators mention that it is "sneaky" just like H.R. 6 and
that you are VERY UPSET, it will get the message across. There is a
massive protest already brewing, and we can win on these! Also, you can
call P.I.N. at (414) 821-1873 for more information or to order two
copies of the article called "Feminist Reconstruction" (which
discusses the above mentioned women's treaty in depth.) for $1.00
postpaid.
 =====================================================================

If that 'Feminine Reconstruction' pamphlet includes the plans for
Michelle Pfeiffer or Kathy Ireland, I'd say it's well-worth the
dollar. Oh, wait. That's FEMINIST reconstruction. Not FEMININE. Don't
care for any today, thanks!
If that's the best the United Nations can do, I'd say the John Birch
Society was right all along. Let's get the U.S. the heck out of U.N.
Construction of feminists, indeed!
As I said earlier, the PRN_Tech area has messages typical of the
other gun-talk offerings on Fidonet or Usenet. But I thought this
recipe especially helpful:

Terry Buyers:

                        RED MIX

If you're offended by the high price of rifle bore cleaner, there's no
reason why you can't mix your own with common ingredients that are
inexpensive, effective, provide corrosion protection, and satisfactory
lubrication.

This "recipe" is based on a formula in Hatcher's Notebook, Frankford
Arsenal Cleaner #18. The original Hatcher recipe called for equal parts
of turpentine, acetone, Astral Oil, and sperm oil (with 200 grams of
lanolin optionally added per liter).

Astral oil is the equivalent of our K-1 kerosene. Sperm oil's modern
equivalent is Dexron II(e) automatic transmission fluid. Lanolin makes
it easier on the hands. This mix will not chemically remove copper
fouling, but it does an excellent job on carbon residue.

                       CONTENTS

(1) part Kerosene - K1
(1) part Dexron II/IIe ATF
(1) part Stoddard Solvent (aka "Varsol")
(1) part Acetone

Optional: up to (1) part USP Anhydrous Lanolin Topical Lubricant (drug
stores)

                     MIXING INSTRUCTIONS:

Mix in well-ventilated area outdoors. Use a clean 1 gallon metal
container, or one of PET or PVC. Do NOT use HDPE!! The mix will dissolve
it!

Begin with the Dexron ATF. Next add the K-1 Kerosene.(*1) Carefully
measure the rest of the ingredients and pour into container. If you are
adding Lanolin, it may be easier to melt it in a double-boiler.

(*1) A small quantity of the 50-50 ATF/kerosene may be saved for use as
a compatible gun oil.

                     INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE:

1. Unload the firearm. Open the action and confirm the bore is clear.
The mix is most effective when the barrel is still warm to the touch
from firing. Saturate a patch with bore cleaner and push it through the
bore from breech to muzzle. The patch should be a snug fit. Let the
first patch fall off and do not pull it back into the bore.

2. Using a second saturated patch, similarly start it into the bore
from
the breech scrubbing from the throat area forward in 3-5" strokes and
advancing until the patch exits the muzzle. Wait approximately 1 minute
to let the bore cleaner soak.

3. For heavily carbon-fouled, leaded, or neglected bores a bronze brush
wet with bore cleaner may be used to remove stubborn deposits.

4. Use a final wet patch pushed straight through the bore to flush out
loosened residue. Let the patch fall off without pulling it back into
the bore. Leaving the bore wet will protect it from rust for up to 30
days. If lanolin has been incorporated into the mixture, it will protect
the firearm from rust longer.

5. Wipe spilled mix from finish and exterior surfaces before storing the
gun. While it is harmless to blue and nickel finishes, the acetone will
soften most wood finishes.

6. Before firing a cleaned firearm, push two dry patches through the
bore and dry the chamber using a patch wrapped around a brush.

7. Hot water cleaning is unnecessary after use of black powder, Pyrodex
or chlorate primers if this mix is used exclusively. If hot water
cleaning is done, flush thoroughly with Red Mix to prevent rusting from
residual moisture.

8. Apply the following indelibly to the container of mix:

                     SAFETY WARNINGS:
              CAUTION: HARMFUL IF SWALLOWED.
KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN
                       FLAMMABLE

1. Flammable mix. Keep away from heat, sparks or flame.

2. FIRST AID - If swallowed DO NOT induce vomiting, call physician
immediately. In case of eye contact immediately flush thoroughly with
water and call a physician. For skin contact wash thoroughly.

3. Use with adequate ventilation. Avoid breathing vapors or spray mist.
It is a violation of Federal law to use this product in a manner
inconsistent with its labeling. Reports have associated repeated and
prolonged occupational overexposure to solvents with permanent brain and
nervous system damage. If using in a closed space that lacks forced air
ventilation, wear respiratory protection meeting NIOSH TC23C or
equivalent. Keep container tightly closed when not in use.

COLONIAL FURNITURE COLORS NEW MEXICO HISTORY

By James E. Rickman, LANL PIO

  LOS ALAMOS, NEW MEXICO October 5, 1994 -- Keith Bakker, a post-graduate
intern from the Smithsonian Institution, is using Los Alamos National
Laboratory equipment for research that challenges some widely held beliefs
about the original appearance of traditional New Mexican furniture.
"When we look at 18th and 19th century New Mexican furniture today, we
often find worn, darkened varnishes and weathered wood," Bakker said.
"That is not how it looked when it was made. The original artisans quite
often painted the furniture with vivid colors: reds, blues, greens, oranges,
and yellows. Some of this furniture was really bright -- just like similar
New England furniture was. Other pieces were painted brown, either with
opaque paints or semi-transparent glazes."
If Bakker is correct, his research may color debate about how isolated
early New Mexican settlers were from the influences of Spain and Mexico
City.
By taking advantage of a memorandum of understanding between Los Alamos
and the Smithsonian that allows Institution researchers to use LANL
equipment, Bakker has found there's more to New Mexican Spanish Colonial
furniture than meets the naked eye. Bakker has been coming to LANL about
once a week for the last two years to look at furniture samples and
cross-sections under a state-of-the-art microscope with ultraviolet
illumination.
Each sample -- usually smaller than a period on a printed page -- is
prepared with fluorochrome dyes before Bakker looks at it under the
microscope, which enlarges a sample image to 400 times actual size.
Under the microscope's ultraviolet illumination, lipids (fats) and
proteins, constituents of furniture oils and animal glues, glow in
distinctive layers before Bakker's eyes.
"By applying fluorochrome stains and examining the samples under
the uv-microscope we can characterize the various layers of finish
and make intelligent guesses about the history of a piece of furniture,"
he said.
Bakker has found that some of the dark colors associated with 18th
century New Mexican furniture are the result of later varnishes, most
likely applied by furniture restorers who had a mistaken impression of
the furniture's original appearance.
But the layers underneath, identified through the microscope, show
Bakker how brightly colored the furniture often was when it was made
and used in New Mexico homes.
Original artisans sometimes coated the wood with white gesso, a
mixture of gypsum and animal glue, and then applied transparent layers
of paint. In these layers, paint pigment particles -- seen easily by
Bakker under the Laboratory's uv-microscope -- are spaced relatively
far apart. Consequently, light penetrates the paint layers and reflects
off the white background, enhancing the brilliance of the color.
The technique was well-known to 18th century European craftsmen and
documented in artist's manuals and treatises from Spain, Italy and
England. Bakker's research indicates that settlers of Northern New
Mexico apparently also knew this technique. What's more, the pigments
in the paints were expensive and are not from local materials, an
indication that they were imported from Mexico or Europe.
"This indicates the influence of the Mexican guild system in the New
Mexico," Bakker said. "People didn't just settle here and then start
teaching themselves how to paint. This goes against the common notion
that when people settled here originally, the area was isolated and
the settlers were unsophisticated."
So how did so much of New Mexico's Spanish Colonial furniture end
up with its contemporary darker finishes? Bakker has a hypothesis.
Anglos who came to the Southwest in the early 1900's liked the
furniture and began buying it at low prices from Hispanic families
who were no longer using it in their homes, Bakker said. Furniture
items often had been stored outdoors before collectors would purchase
them.
"So, Anglos started collecting furniture that was weathered and worn
and beat up, and it fit with all the romantic notions they had about
how isolated New Mexicans were and how hard life was in frontier New
Mexico," he said.
Ultimately, many collectors brought the furniture to someone for
restoration, Bakker said. The restorers refinished the furniture with
dark varnishes, perhaps because the original paint had darkened with age
and that's all the restorer saw.
Similarly, around the turn of the century -- when the Arts and Crafts
Movement was popular -- furniture collectors expected to see "natural"
wood and sometimes pieces were left in their weathered and unfinished
condition. The rest is history...although not necessarily an accurate
history, according to Bakker.
"I think we can be reasonably certain that craftsmen who built this
furniture didn't go to the trouble and expense of obtaining pigments
from Mexico, putting them on a white background and then covering it
all up with a dark varnish," Bakker said.
To test his hypothesis, Bakker, a furniture conservator, is gathering
as much information as possible about furniture restoration techniques
of the 1930s. Using the ultraviolet microscope and other equipment
available in Los Alamos' Life Sciences Division, Bakker has shown that
some of the outer dark layers of varnish on New Mexican furniture were
put there by restorers long after the furniture was originally made.
"Some people may have a hard time accepting these ideas,' Bakker
said, "because they have these set beliefs about 'Southwestern Style.'
Many people think the rough condition of New Mexican Spanish Colonial
furniture somehow represents the way it was made and used.
"I'm saying that the present condition of New Mexican furniture often
represents romantic 20th century ideas, rather than the ideas of the
18th and 19th century Hispanic craftsmen who built the furniture,"
Bakker said.

BEAM ME UP, SCOTTY!

Lasers, plasmas and beams of all sorts -- electron, ion and microwave --
have a variety of potential applications in industry, and a "virtual"
center at Los Alamos has been established to develop new processes based
on beam technologies and relevant to industry. The center is "virtual"
because it has no walls but instead identifies and ties together
capabilities across the laboratory. Beam technologies, as described
to industrial representatives at a recent conference in Albuquerque,
can deliver concentrated energy to pinpoint locations in a manufacturing
process, reducing overall energy consumption, lessening environmental
impacts and cutting manufacturing costs.

STICK WITH ME

Cleaning contaminated soils or fluids of radioactive particles can be
eased by exploiting the particles' magnetic properties. Plutonium and
uranium, for example, are slightly magnetic whereas the soils and
liquids they contaminate usually are not. Los Alamos and Lockheed
Environmental, under a cooperative research and development agreement,
are developing a system that would pass a slurry of contaminated soil
through a matrix, such as steel wool, surrounded by powerful magnetic
coils. The slightly magnetic radioactive particles would be extracted
from the slurry by the steel wool and could then be processed for
disposal. Furthermore, researchers can exploit the specific magnetic
properties of different particles to sort them from one another.

ANOTHER COOL IDEA

Los Alamos researchers have developed a thermodynamic cycle that
uses liquified carbon dioxide -- a safe, environmentally harmless
fluid -- as the refrigerant rather than chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs,
which are suspected of damaging the protective ozone layer in Earth's
atmosphere. A prototype "Malone refrigerator" is being developed in
a Los Alamos lab to provide a demonstration of a process that could
provide welcome relief to the refrigeration industry, which is faced
with a forced phase out of CFCs, the traditional working fluid in
refrigerators. For the Malone approach to be successful, however, it
has to offer more than environmental relief: it must cool with low cost
and high efficiency.

SELF-INFLICTED WOUNDS

A Los Alamos researcher is studying why and how some cells kill
themselves. Instructions for programmed cell death, or apoptosis, are
encoded in cell DNA. These "suicide genes" can tell a cell to self-
destruct instead of dividing. When the suicide gene is turned on,
messenger ribonucleic acids instruct the cell to produce an enzyme that
cuts the cell's DNA at specific and regular intervals, snipping the DNA
helix like shears through a rose stem. Los Alamos scientists are trying
to find out if the cell uses cell suicide to prevent itself from passing
along damaged chromosomes that may, in subsequent generations, give rise
to cancer cells. They are also studying whether the gene turns on too
easily in some cells, leading to neurodegenerative diseases. The research
ultimately could give researchers a tool for fighting cancer and other
diseases.

ADVANCING FUSION RESEARCH IS GOAL OF HISTORIC
U.S.- RUSSIAN EXPERIMENT AT LOS ALAMOS LAB

By Jim Danneskiold and Kathy Higgins, LANL PIO

LOS ALAMOS, NEW MEXICO, October 20, 1994 -- Russian and Los Alamos
National Laboratory scientists today joined unique Russian technology
with sophisticated Los Alamos diagnostic instruments in a controlled
fusion energy experiment.
The experiment united nuclear weapons design physicists and engineers
from the two former Cold War foes. The experiment, in Ancho Canyon near
Bandelier National Monument, is the fifth experimental campaign in 13
months between Los Alamos scientists and researchers from the All Russian
Scientific Research Institute of Experimental Physics at Arzamas-16.
"These experiments are providing the first good look for Western science
at a relatively untried approach to controlled fusion energy," said Los
Alamos physicist Irv Lindemuth.
A fusion and pulsed-power expert, Lindemuth has been a key player in the
Russian-U.S. laboratory collaborations. Lindemuth stressed that the
experiments achieve two important goals: advancing the knowledge of physics
in both nations and bringing together for peaceful research the scientists
who designed the Russian and U.S. weapons of mass destruction.
"These experiments are part of an unprecedented scientific collaboration
between nuclear weapons scientists of these two nations that has been
encouraged at the highest levels of both governments," he said.
  In today's experiment, the Russian-built pulsed-power apparatus
converted the chemical energy released by roughly 100 pounds of high
explosives into an intense electrical pulse and concentrated magnetic
energy. The electromagnetic energy compressed and heated a plasma, or
magnetized gas, to pressures and temperature that approach those found
in the sun and other stars.
Data still being analyzed from the Los Alamos diagnostic equipment will
provide much more detailed information than ever before about the plasma
behavior when it is heated to temperatures approaching the onset of fusion
reactions, Lindemuth said. Scientists from both nations also will examine
how different high explosives, some of which were developed at Los Alamos,
affect the outcome.
Magnetized target fusion has characteristics of both U.S. approaches
to fusion power: magnetic fusion, such as the tokamak reactor at Princeton,
and inertial confinement fusion.
In magnetic fusion, a gas is heated sufficiently to strip its atoms
of their electrons and the resulting plasma is confined by a magnetic
field as it is heated further to create a fusion reaction. Inertial
confinement fusion uses a powerful laser to compress a fuel pellet with
so much force that the heat ignites the fusion process in the pellet.
A magnetic field allows the Russian magnetized target fusion technique
to suppress heat loss in the plasma, as in magnetic fusion, while
retaining the implosion heating and plasma confinement advantages of
inertial confinement fusion.
The compression and speed of reactions achieved in magnetized target
fusion are intermediate from those recorded in the two Western fusion
methods.
"Unique Russian equipment makes possible a thorough experimental
examination of this alternative approach t fusion energy," Lindemuth
said.
A controlled fusion reaction requires heating a plasma to temperatures
greater than 40 million degrees Celsius. Los Alamos and Arzamas-16
scientists expect that today's experiment achieved temperatures greater
than 4 million degrees for several millionths of a second, but a tiny
component of the plasma approached 40 million degrees and produced fusion
reactions.
Analysis in progress may show that the experiment may have potentially
produced the largest number of fusion reactions ever in a single pulsed-
power experiment at Los Alamos. Similar experiments six months ago at
Arzamas-16 produced nearly 10 trillion fusion reactions.
Arzamas-16 researchers, led by the late Andrei Sakharov, the Soviet
weapons designer, dissident and Nobel Prize winner, developed Russian
magnetized target fusion, a technique the West knew little about until
recently. Sakharov once said that realization of the potential in pulsed
power for studying high-energy density physics and producing electrical
energy from fusion reactions was his fondest wish. Los Alamos has the
only active U.S. high-explosive pulsed-power program.
"Prior to this year, no one has ever fully described the Russian hardware
in the scientific literature," Lindemuth said. "In fact, these pulsed-power
systems and the spectacular Russian achievements weren't known about at
all before 1992."
In a related experiment last winter at Los Alamos, researchers from the
two institutes used the ultrahigh magnetic fields generated by the other
Russian pulsed-power machines to study the properties of high-temperature
superconductors, which could increase the understanding of electronic
devices at the atomic level.
Discussions about joint scientific work began in February 1992 during
an historic visit to Arzamas-16 and its sister laboratory at Chelyabinsk-70
by Los Alamos Director Sig Hecker and John Nuckolls, former director of
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
In addition to his role in the scientific collaboration, Lindemuth has
successfully brought together Russian and U.S. scientists and their
families through several exchange visits, a pen-pal project with the Los
Alamos and Arzamas-16 schools and a visit to New Mexico last spring by
eight Arzamas high school students and their teachers.

VOLCANO: GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY FOR LOS ALAMOS SCIENTIST

By James E. Rickman, LANL PIO

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, October 27, 1994 -- A Los Alamos National Laboratory
geologist has discovered that a killer volcano has the "Midas touch."
Fraser Goff, with Los Alamos' Geology and Geochemistry Group, today
presented findings about the gold-producing propensity of Colombia's
Galeras volcano -- which killed nine people during a 1993 eruption -- at
the Geological Society of America's annual meeting in Seattle.
Goff has learned that Galeras is exhaling about a pound of gold into
the air each day through its vents. In addition, the volcano has formed
a vein in which high-grade rock fragments have an equivalent yield of
about eight ounces of gold per mined ton.
In January 1993, Goff and other Los Alamos researchers attended a
conference on volcanic threats in Pasto, Colombia, a town of about
300,000 nestled at the base of Galeras. Goff and his colleagues also
wanted to take samples to look for evidence of tritium in volcanic
discharges.
But on January 14, all hell broke loose: the volcano let fly with a
spray of heated rock, gas and ash that claimed the lives of nine people,
six of them scientists, who were near the rim of the 14,000 foot tall
volcano. Goff was in a valley well below the rim when Galeras exploded.
Another member of Goff's team was near the rim, but he huddled under a hard
hat and received only a few burns from the scorching-hot rocks raining down.
"About two and a half weeks after the eruption, we were inside the crater
collecting samples," Goff said. "It was kind of strange being there."
But it was a comment by a Colombian guide that eventually helped Goff
realize that the volcano was producing more than magma and a caustic brew
of hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid
and other noxious gases.
"Near one of the gas vents we were sampling, about 16 kilometers west
of the Galeras summit, this guide kind of jokingly asked me if I wanted
to look at a gold vein," Goff said. "The guide was kind of laughing like
it was nothing and I took a few samples and brought them back with the
others."
Goff said it wasn't until he found gold in the quartz vein material
that he started looking for gold in the other samples.
"We didn't start out this project looking for gold," he said. "If I
hadn't found it in the samples from that vein, we probably wouldn't have
looked for it at all."
The Galeras volcano is producing a large amount of the precious metal,
relative to other active volcanoes. Goff took samples of magmatic fluid --
sulfur and sulfate-laden steam that roared out of fumaroles at temperatures
between 200 degrees and 360 degrees Celsius (between 392 and 680 degrees F)
--and found that the fluid contained gold in quantities of 0.04 parts per
million, while precipitated sulfur from the fluid contained quantities as
high as 23 parts per million.
Goff found gold in quantities as high as 2.59 parts per million (or about
two and a half grams per ton) in rocks that had come from Galeras eruptions;
in the quartz vein he sampled, the quantity of high-grade gold was about
269 parts per million, while gold ore showed up in quantities of about
22 parts per million.
"This is a significant amount of gold coming from the Galeras volcano,"
Goff said. "The few other active volcanoes which have had fluids analyzed
for gold indicate concentrations of about 10 parts per BILLION or less. So
the gold coming out of Galeras is much higher than anything that has been
seen from an active volcano so far."
The samples were tested at two different laboratories to ensure the
accuracy of the readings. Goff's colleagues at Los Alamos' Geochemistry
Laboratory first analyzed the rocks and fluids that had been collected
from Galeras. Samples also were sent to a lab in Canada.
Moreover, the gold-bearing vein sample was dated by Los Alamos scientist
Mike Murrell and found to be about 560,000 years old. Since the vein is
at the base of the volcano, it indicates that Galeras has been expelling
gold during episodic eruptions since infancy.
"The fact that this volcano is producing so much gold is exciting to
geologists because we are seeing an active geologic record of ores being
build up in rocks -- an active ore deposit is probably being formed
right now," Goff said. "For geochemists, this volcano provides them
with an opportunity to see how gold and other metals are chemically
transported and deposited."
However, people may take an interest in Galeras for reasons other than
science, he said.
"I've been keeping this quiet for a couple of years now and I haven't
told really anybody about this," said Goff. "I'm sure once the word starts
getting out there will be some people who will stake claims on the volcano."
Goff outlined his discovery of gold at Galeras in a paper that was
published in the October 1994 issue of "GSA Today."

both organizations. Second, to boost public awareness of the plight of
the wolf, our environment, and it's many other inhabitants, along with
-More-exhibitions of environmentally friendly and safe alternative products
and services available on the market today.

Events are designed for FUN! Categories such as "The dog who
most resembles their human", and "The dog with the longest tail"
are high on the list. There will be howling and barking contests (for
the humans) <chuckle> and agility demonstrations (for the dogs). <g>

These events are designed so that ANYONE can enter! Please

CALLING A BBS AND YOU CAN'T GET AN ANSWER? Many System Operators will take
their BBS down during thunderstorm activity. We encourage SysOps to take
their phone line "off hook" to busy the line out during these periods of non-
service. Some do, some don't. If you can't get through, try again later.

If you are the SysOp of a BBS and wish to have your system listed in
Houston's largest and most accurate BBS list, call THE ATOMIC CAFE BBS at 713-
530-8875. Log on under your real name, and answer the registration informat-
ion. Then, from the top level menu, select <H>. You will then be at the
Houston Area 713 BBS List (c) Center. Select <4> to add a system or to change
your system. Select <5> to remove your system from the list. In either case,
you will be asked to answer a questionnaire for EACH line you wish to list.
The service is FREE. We reserve the right to refuse to list any system that
we feel may be inappropriate to list.

Here are a few other things to keep in mind ...

*FidoNet BBS systems dedicate one hour a day to mail exchange. That hour is
normally from 4-5 a.m. central time, or 3-4 a.m. central daylight time. Most
FidoNet nodes will not accept a call from a human user during that time, but
does allow other computers on the network to connect to exchange mail.

*Numbers that ring constantly over a period of a few days are removed from the
list due to the fact that the system may have been de-commissioned and that
number may now be a voice line. We cannot take a chance on that.

*If you encounter a human voice on a line listed herein as a BBS, please let
us know. Send the number and the name of the system to: Houston Area 713 BBS
List (c), P. O. Box 720894, Houston Texas 77072. Or send Internet email to
d.wachenschwanz@atomiccafe.com; FidoNet email to David Wachenschwanz @ FidoNet
node 1:106/235; or call 713-530-8875, The Atomic Cafe BBS and register as a
new user.

*There is no charge for accessing The Atomic Cafe to do this. We do very much
appreciate your assistance in keeping the Houston Area 713 BBS List (c) up to
date and as accurate as possible.

*Houston is a VERY VOLATILE BBS market. Systems up one day may be down for
good on the next. For every system to goes down, there are usually 2 or 3 to
replace it. Therefore, it is vital that you always do your BBS dialing from a
RECENT list.
