Snacks, Wine and Videotape

Videos n Vintages

Popcorn and a soft drink may be okay for a night out at the cineplex, but youre at home now. Why not do it right?

WARNING: This column will pay very little attention to political correctness, calories, or expense.

For the premiere issue of HTT, Ive selected three films that, when viewed with the appropriate wine, should provide a memorable evening in your home theateror at least a good buzz. Live it up!

REALITY DRINKS

Reality Bites

What could be better to accompany Reality Bitesthe angst-ridden Generation-X film starring Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke, and Ben Stillerthan a big, buxom, fruity, firmly tannic, step-up-to-the-plate-and-take-a-swing Zinfandel? Franus 1992 Hendrys Vineyard Zinfandel (street price $12$14) is as loud yet somewhat more confident than the characters in this movie.
Franus wines are loaded with berry flavors supported by pepper and sweet vanilla tones. This wine comes from one of my favorite Zinfandel vineyards in California: Hendrys
Vineyard. Peter Franus has done a lovely job with this most expressive grape.
Recommended snacks: Anything in the refrigerator thats
not moldyor, if you must, order a pizza.

THE NARNIA
WINERIES

Shadowlands

From a country that loves a great Claret comes Shadowlands, a story about author C.S. Lewis starring Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger. My wine pick for this movie is Robert Mondavi 1991 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, which, much like the film, is a class act (street price not yet available.) This wine parallels Wingers
performance early in the movie: young, fresh, and vibrant. Like Hopkins portrayal, however, this wine develops a deep, resonant, and elegant finish. Mondavi, a highly respected vintner in California, is producing world-class wines, and has shown its true colors again with the 1990 and 1991 reserve bottlings.
Recommended snacks: Thinly sliced peppered salami, thinly sliced Reggiano parmesan on Bretons sesame-seed crackers.

CHAMPAGNE WISHES

Four Weddings And A Funeral

Starring Andie MacDowell and Hugh Grant, Four Weddings And A Funeral is a fun and engaging movie filled with delightful dialog and colorful characters. So what could be more appropriate than a lovely Champagne? Veueve Cliquot 1985 Gold Label at $36 or their non-vintage Yellow Label at $27 are my picks here. These Champagnes are among the best produced, yet they are still somewhat affordable. Veueve Cliquot is pleasingly dry with very appealing fruit and a great finish. But beware, with a classy Champagne and the subject matter of this film, who knows what could happen?!
Recommended snacks: Fresh mozzarella wrapped with proscuitto, served with fresh
peaches, melons, and strawberries.
