AB OBJECTIVE: To show costs of an effective alternative assistance in
Brazil where the social and economic problems are severe. METHODS: 243
GIV patients maintenance costs were researched in a communitarian
domiciliate system from nov/88 to dec/93 at Brenda Lee Support House
(NGO that works with AIDS patients) all of them with severe social
problems. RESULTS: The mean time of permanence in the house were 145.62
days; 1.5 internation occured, with a mean time of 24 days. Cost per
       patient/mo: US$ 43. Total cost per patient:US$ 2,100. From this cost:
23.3% for alimentation; 5.7% for higienical material; 33.5% for
maintenance; 37.4% for payroll 15 employees. CONCLUSIONS: This Support
House give adequate nutritional and emotional care to these patients
reducing the number of internations as well as the treatment cost.
Without this social alternative the natural way would be a traditional
internation that raises budget costs of the treatment, makes the
internation too much longer, causing problems to the patient and to the
       local Health Care System.
